Smuin Ballet's annual Christmas Ballet leaps onto the YBCA's stage with plenty of delightfully entertaining holiday cheer in tow. Directed by Celia Fushille-Burke and Dwight Hutton, the ballet is split into two acts, the first one titled "Classical Christmas" and the second one "Cool Christmas." "Classical Christmas" features the performers in virginal white costumes dancing to 14 different pieces of music such as Resonet in laudibus and Jauchzet Frohlocket at the pace of three or so minutes per piece. The performances, though pretty, soon become repetitive, due in part to the sheer number and brevity of the sequences, with the dancers beginning and ending a new piece every few minutes and no discernible choreographic progression or buildup of momentum. With act two's "Cool Christmas," however, all is forgiven. Featuring more upbeat tunes like Santa Baby, Cajun Christmas and Lou Rawls' Drummer Boy, flashier costumes and more creative choreography, the Christmas Ballet changes into a rousing holiday treat. Of particular note is Ikolo Grifin's excellent performance in Drummer Boy, which earned a round of well-deserved cheers and applause from the audience. By the end, everyone leaves with a smile on their face and joy in their heart, marks of an evening enjoyed by all. Unevenness aside, Smuin's Christmas Ballet stands as a beloved, magical part of the holiday season. - Christopher Medina
