The Grand Seducers: Giovanni Meets Xi-men Qing, a new East-West Opera, dramatizes the serendipitous encounters of two legendary Casanovas, Mozart's Don Giovanni and Xi-men Qing of the Water Margin Heroes novel (Song Dynasty, 960-1280 A.D.). This innovative operatic creation combines Mozart's great rendition of Don Giovanni and famous characters from classic Chinese opera in a new story by prolific librettist Cao Lusheng. The opera, sung in English punctured with Chinese, features Merola Opera artists with vocal brilliance and comic ebullience, under the direction of Isabel Milenski. Not your typical musical, this production is a new-age rendering of both opera and the novel with delightful results. Don Giovanni and Xi-men Qing are vividly tragic characters in their own right, and their merry meetings and their romantic escapades gives audiences an exciting blending of cultures in conflict. The Grand Seducers features music by Mozart and Gang Situ. Libretto by Cao Lusheng. Sung in English with Chinese highlights. Featuring, Adler Fellows, Eugene Brancoveanu and Thomas Glenn, Kunqu Opera singer, Sabrina Hou and Jennifer Boesing, Heidi Moss and Larry Zhang. Performances: Th 8p; F 8p; Sa 2p, 8p. Tickets: $25; $22.50 for seniors, students with ID; discounts for Chinese Culture Foundation members and groups of ten or more. Review © 2009, Wcities |
