The very number of popular bars and restaurants in downtown San Jose, the hub of the city's nightlife, present something of a challenge. The visitor must choose from establishments ranging from the most of-the-moment to the cheapest and least pretentious dive, and from cuisines from every corner of the globe.

The Flying Pig Pub, Toon's, South First Billiards, and stylish Fuel and Agenda Lounge are but a few of San Jose's downtown bars and nightclubs. There is, it seems, a watering hole for every taste, age group, and inclination. Sport bar buffs won't miss an inning at the Britannia Arms or C.S. Riff's. If you love country and western music, hit the Saddle Rack for line dancing, boot scootin' and electric bull ridin'. For down-home rhythm and blues, JJ's Lounge is the place. It's a dive of sorts, but then that's just the right atmosphere for the gritty, soulful talent it features.

Once one is ready to move on to solid fare, the choices are made slightly easier if one has a budget in mind. For the most refined and stylish dining in San Jose, regardless of cost, one should try five-star Emile's (a Conde Nast favorite), fusion favorite E & O Trading Company, A.P. Stumps, Paolo's and Spiedo Ristorante. You can certainly eat well at other downtown restaurants, however, and with elegance, without spending a month's salary. Scott's Seafood, Il Fornaio (in the Hyatt Sainte Claire), La Pastaia (in the Hotel DeAnza), and Blake's Steakhouse and Bar are all excellent choices for a business lunch or dinner. Robust and reliable American fare can also be had at local favorites Original Joe's, Waves Smokehouse and Saloon, and 94th Aero Squadron.

The last three establishments are not particularly advised for vegetarians, however; they would do better at White Lotus Vegan Restaurant, a vegetarian spot voted Best Vietnamese Restaurant in San Jose by several local newspapers and Web sites. Ethiopian Red Sea is another good bet for vegetarians, though it's slightly north of downtown, at 684 North First Street.

Eulipia serves imaginative fusion fare at reasonable prices in stylish surroundings. If you are a sushi lover, Izakaya, Kazoo, Niko should all satisfy with remarkably fresh fish. Thepthai Thai Cuisine and House of Siam are favorites with local Thai food enthusiasts. Though, like any other large California city, San Jose has scores of Chinese restaurants, Pagoda (in The Fairmont Hotel) offers a particularly serene, intimate atmosphere in which to enjoy first-rate Chinese food, and it's dimly lit, in case you want a bit of privacy with your dining companion. And if you're not particularly in the mood for Asian cuisine, try Picasso's Restaurant, a charming and traditional Spanish establishment with live flamenco guitar on weekends.

For inexpensive but satisfying grub, burrito haven Mucho's should fit the bill. Or head to Juicy Burger, and to top it all off, O'Brien's Candy Store, an old-fashioned soda fountain inside the San Jose Historical Museum and a favorite, it has been said, of Richard M. Nixon.

Willow Glen

South of downtown, Willow Glen (an older neighborhood of San Jose) has lined its main drag, Lincoln Avenue, with some fine dining establishments. Aqui Cal-Mex Grill is just what you think it would be, California-Mexican, with a grill, as is John's XLNT Foods. Willow Street Wood Fired Pizza and China Palace are two other low-budget Lincoln Avenue favorites. Cramped, family-owned La Villa Delicatessen, while not a restaurant per se, does make homemade raviolis that make great eating on their patio (furnished with umbrellas and chairs).

Nearby Cities

In Los Gatos, a town with a carefully preserved, frontiersy image and lots of money, the small downtown area offers many a worthwhile place to drink and dine. The Los Gatos Brewing Company is a local hangout where seemingly everyone pulls up in his Ferrari after work for some suds and chow. Another favorite is the small English pub, Carry Nations. The California Cafe offers memorable views to compliment the California Cuisine and pleasant ambience. Steamer's and The Plumed Horse are two other popular choices for locals and visitors. Authentic Pigalle is as French a restaurant as one could hope to find outside the Septieme Arrondissement in Paris, while Valeriano's serves inventive Italian cuisine in a lovely surroundings.

A stroll down Santa Cruz Avenue (Los Gatos' main drag) will take you by a number of night spots where one can dance or listen to music. One can sniff the wealth in the restaurants of nearby Saratoga, as well: Viaggio is an impeccable Italian restaurant and bar, and Le Mouton Noir is French and expensive and delightful. At La Fondue reservations are required up to three months in advance, which should say it all. Call to plan your visit now, and set your phone on redial. The primary culinary attraction of Campbell (wedged between San Jose and Los Gatos) is The Pruneyard, a shopping center, where shopping is accompanied with restorative food (Rock Bottom Cafe, Left at Albuquerque).

A highlight of Santa Clara (for the most part a land of chain and franchise restaurants) is Birk's Restaurant, near Paramount's Great America. Its California Cuisine is worth the trip if you're in the area, but the main attraction seems to be the busy bar scene there.

You are immediately soaked into the scene upon entering this charming eatery in Willow Glen. The chefs concoct a wonderfully varied fusion of California and Mexican cuisines that defies categorization. A little Asian influence is thrown in for even more variety. The daily specials are always magnificent and nothing is ever more than $12. You can eat inside the Southwestern-styled dining room, where it is always packed, or you can hang out at the outside patio tables. For the more adventurous, 40 kinds of tequila are offered in the bar. Try the huge Ahi burrito. The service is great.

By far one of the best steakhouses in San Jose, this upscale eatery has simple but sophisticated decor. The prime rib is excellent, and the steak and avocado salad is a definite winner. The specialty is (obviously) steak, but the fish and chicken dishes are divine as well. Service is impeccable. This is a swank place to enjoy a steak and a bottle of wine before heading out on the town. Business meeting spaces are available.

Campbell

San Jose and Silicon Valley
United States
Campbell and Cupertino are nestled between the borders of San Jose, Los Gatos and Saratoga. Each has a distinct downtown commercial district, but remain mostly residential communities. People who move here tend to have children, as these are excellent areas in which to raise a family. Children will delight in visiting Coyote Point, a museum offering educational experiences for children focusing on the interactions between people and nature. For older children and adults, the Winchester Mystery House is a fascinating historic home owned by the heir to the Winchester Fortune. Stairs that lead to the ceiling and doors opening onto blank walls are just a few of the bizarre features of this home.

Downtown San Jose

San Jose and Silicon Valley
United States
An extensive 1980s facelift gave formerly downtrodden downtown San Jose a spate of five-star hotels and museums, a convention center, and an arena on par with any in America. All that was needed was a bit of refinement in the go-go '90s to give it the cosmopolitan air of a world-class city. Thriving, sophisticated, and unquestionably moneyed, downtown feels (if only because the rest of Silicon Valley is so decentralized) like the capital of Silicon Valley. Looking out over the Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park, The Fairmont Hotel reigns over a bevy of beautiful luxury hotels; nearby are the stately Hyatt Sainte Claire and Hotel DeAnza. The very number of popular bars and restaurants presents a challenge to the visitor. The galleries, coffeehouses and theaters of the SoFA (South of First Street) district give downtown a bit of SoMa/SoHo urban chic.

One of the all time classic restaurants in San Jose, OJ's has been around since 1956. Huge, that is, HUGE portions of food are served here. The waiters are never far and the bartenders are truly one of a kind. It is the only restaurant in the area that is open until 1:30a. Santa Clara

San Jose and Silicon Valley
United States
The historic center of Santa Clara Valley, Santa Clara's Mission Santa Clara de Asis, was founded in 1777 by Father Junipero Serra. A small community of Californios and Ohlones sprang up around it, which has now swelled to about 100,000. The makeup of the population has changed, of course, as has almost everything else about this densely-packed city. Its southern half is residential and largely middle-class. To the north are industrial parks which house some of the real giants of the technology industry: 3Com, Intel, Yahoo!, National Semiconductor, Applied Materials, and Synoptics. The Mission is still there, however (the present building, dating from 1928, is the latest in a series of churches destroyed by floods, earthquakes, and fires), on the grounds of the University of Santa Clara.

Ever since Starbuck's, Barnes & Noble and Hollywood Video moved in, the mall has changed its style to cater to a more suburbanite crowd.

Thepthai Thai Cuisine

Reasonably priced spicy food
23 North Market Street
(between Santa Clara and St John streets)
San Jose and Silicon Valley, CA 95113
United States
+1 408 292 7515
This Thai place has been in San Jose for many years and has hardly raised its prices in that time. It offers a spectacular lunch buffet for less than $8 (without the drinks) and excellent service. The exotic decor and the lingering aromas, common features of all good Thai places, will make your mouth water. Try the Tom Kha Gai soup or the prawns sauteeed with cashew nuts and roasted chiles. It is a spicy food lover's home away from home.

Cheap beer
52 East Santa Clara Street
San Jose and Silicon Valley, CA 95113
United States

Beer for 50 cents can be tantalizing, and this club offers that price between 8pm and 10pm every Wednesday. Add a totally electric singles bar atmosphere with live cover bands nightly, and you have a popular club filled to the rafters with local Silicon Valley types. In the back room you can play pool or video games while the others dance the night away.

Set in a former 19th century brothel, this BBQ restaurant and saloon offers a great variety of smokehouse platters. You can go upstairs and eat dinner on the rooftop patio or, if you need to catch some television, you can chow down in the bar, which has 24 beers on tap and a load of single-malt scotches. The bar itself is more than 100 years old and the sleek mahogany decor makes for a great hangout. This place is highly recommended to carnivores and suds-heads. Try the Smoked Duck Salad served up by the personable and efficient wait staff.

Willow Glen

San Jose and Silicon Valley
United States
Willow Glen is a small and attractive residential community with a reputation for some of San Jose's most beautiful homes, built mostly in the 1930s in the Southwestern, Colonial and Italian style. The community displays an undeniable civic pride with manicured lawns, well-tended flowers, and precious mailboxes. Willow Glen sits just southwest of downtown San Jose, yet has an engaging downtown of its own along Lincoln Avenue. One can stroll Lincoln Avenue for everything from coffee (Starbucks, Willow Glen Roasting Company) to billiards (Willow Glen Billiards) to a fair share of restaurants and attractive boutiques. Willow Glen is particularly noted for its antiques (The French Quarter and the inimitable Adopt-A-Doll being two of the most popular shops). Christmastime brings an exceptionally traditional holiday look to the area's houses and businesses.
