Arken Museum of Modern Art

The Newest Museum of Modern Art
Skovvej 100
Ishøj 2635
+45 4354 0222
http://www.arken.dk
reception@arken.dk
Arken, located in Ishøj, south of Copenhagen, houses a large new museum for modern art. This building has a character of its own, given to it by architect Søren Robert Lund. Arken fits beautifully into the low-lying landscape of beach, lakes, lagoons, and dikes. From a distance, the building resembles a huge ship. The interior of the museum has been criticised for not being very suitable for exhibiting paintings. Arken hosts exhibitions of work by world-famous modern artists, such as Dalí or Rauschenberg, as well as works by relatively unknown artists. It also contains a concert hall and a cinema.

Biological Museum

Hazeliusporten

http://www.biologiskamuseet.com
bokning@skansen.se
The small, brown building that houses the Biological Museum is next to the entrance to Skansen. Completed in 1893, its old Nordic style is interesting, especially when you see the curious double spiral staircase inside. There are several displays of stuffed animals that are well-made reconstructions of their natural habitats. The sheer number of stuffed animals testify the expertise of the taxidermists. It is evident in one special creation, the surreal rabbit-hawk. By placing beautiful outspread wings on a rabbit, one taxidermist had succeeded in creating a strange creature popular from Swedish farmer folklore. To reach the museum, take buses 44 or 47 to Djurgården from T-Centralen, or the ferry from Slussen.

This museum calls itself the world's only museum of dance, and rightfully so. Located close to the Royal Opera House, the museum features costumes and memorabilia of dance performances in Stockholm, including the original costumes of the Russian Ballet in Paris designed by such artists as Bakst, Debunay and Matisse. But for those not interested in the discipline of ballet, there are plenty of spicy and soulful international dance styles to choose from. The museum also houses excellent archives and a study center for international folk dance. There is a café and shop offering a wide display of videos for sale.

Finnish designers have steadily gained an increasingly good international reputation and are slowly nearing the fame Finnish architects enjoyed in the last century. The Helsinki School of Design seems to maintain high standards, annually giving forth new, talented blood. In Helsinki, the places to go and see the newest designs are the Museum of Industrial Art and Design Forum. The latter is situated in the city centre, where Etelä-Esplanadi and Fabianinkatu meet, roughly across the street from Hotel Kämp. Design Forum exhibits include furniture, textiles and tableware as well as architecture, interior design and industrial design. Often the display focuses on the work of one established or upcoming designer.

Fritjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen and Otto Sverdrup all sailed this 100-year-old ship (called the 'Fram') on their daring Arctic expeditions. Covered by a uniquely-shaped building on the Bygdøy peninsula, the ship lends weight to the museum's focus on Norway's crucial role in the history of Arctic exploration. Visitors can now visit the ship's interior and see all its original contents and, best of all, can be sure to leave the ship without feeling seasick!

The Cable Factory houses a set of spaces for a wide variety of uses—offices, restaurants, museums, studios and galleries, as well as tiny band rehearsal rooms and two radio stations (Radio City and KissFM). The building is utilised to the smallest nook. Until the 1980s the Cable Factory was what the name implies, and the interiors vary in shape and size. Although every room has been thoroughly renovated, the basic feeling is still as austere as that of a factory. This does not discourage a wide range of activities from taking place here, you can catch art festivals, exhibitions and theatre, dance and music performances. The impressive 100m Sea Cable Hall (Merikaapelihalli) is frequently used for performances, and has seen events featuring thousands of people, wild horses, motorcycles and symphony orchestras.

The Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Orignally, it was a birthday gift to Queen Louisa Ulrica by King Adolphus Frederick in 1754. Unfortunately, the original pavilion succumbed to the effects of bad weather. The existing pavilion, which is as beautiful, was built by one of Sweden's leading Rococo architects, CF Adelcrantz, in 1768. The pavilion was once a vacation home for the Royal Family but is now a café open to the general public.

The Moderna Museum, located across the bridge from Skeppsholmen, is one of the most interesting museums in the city. The building itself is highly acclaimed for its clean aesthetic lines, open spaces and brilliant use of natural light. Many of the exhibitions create a powerful cocktail of provocative, shocking, confusing and fantastic elements, and it is possible that you may feel a bit dizzy in the spacious rooms, especially with works that force the audiences to re-evaluate space and dimensions. On the whole, the museum is a challenging but rewarding place to visit. It houses an excellent collection of both Swedish and international modern art, including many familiar pieces by Warhol, Duchamp, Matisse and Picasso. You can also spend several hours in the photography library, and the comprehensive gift shop.

This is Sweden's largest art museum, with a collection that dates back to the 16th and 20th centuries. The collection has been gradually built through purchases, gifts and spoils of war, during the country's era as a military power in the 17th century. It includes fantastic paintings and sculptures by Rembrandt, Rubens, Boucher, Renoir, Degas and Gauguin and the Swedish masters Anders Zorn and Carl Larsson. There are also significant collections of drawings, engravings and handicrafts from the Renaissance to the present day. The museum should definitely be on your travel itinerary and even if you're not an art lover, the sheer beauty of the building is worth a look.

The National Museum of Finland was designed by Herman Geselius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen. The museum is one of the proudest pieces of the Finnish Art Nouveau movement. The castle—like building was completed in 1906 after which it has been one of the landmarks of the city, known for its tall tower and the Emil Wikström sculpture Bear that stands guard at the main entrance. The building's courtyard and the surrounding walls form a nice addition to the structure. The National Museum's comprehensive collections spread out over four floors and about 3,200 square meters. They show the development of Finland from as far back as prehistory. The exhibitions are historical and encompass archaeology, culture and sociology. Even if you go no further than the main entrance hall you will be amazed. The ceiling is decorated by Kalevala— inspired frescos made by famous artist Akseli Gallen—Kallela. He originally painted them for the Paris World Fair held at the beginning of the twentieth century. The street between the National Museum and the Parliament Building has numerous statues that represent Finnish presidents and other notable people. In addition to the permanent exhibition, various special exhibitions are arranged in the museum.

In the Middle Ages, Roskilde was a trading town, and in the Viking period it had been a centre for ship-building. The city is beautifully located at the end of Roskilde Inlet, 30km west of Copenhagen. It is easy to reach by both train and car. Roskilde offers a wide selection of interesting attractions for visitors, primarily the exciting Viking Ship Museum. Located just by the inlet, this museum's collection is based on archaeological finds of Viking ships in that particular area. Roskilde Cathedral, located at the highest point of the city, is also interesting and beautiful. Here, Danish kings and queens have been buried for the last 800 years. The Cathedral also shows the changes that have taken place in architectural styles in that time. The old ferry Sagafjord is famous for serving delicious meals while you enjoy the views over the inlet. The main street should also be mentioned, with its preserved old town houses and the lovely park. In general, the city offers lots of experiences and sights to see. Not far south of the city you will find Lejre Forsøgscenter and Ledreborg Slot.

Of the three fascinating Viking ships on display here, the Oseberg and the 24m-long Gokstadship are in particularly good condition. The ships, which date back some 1,100 years, were used as graves for powerful men and women. Lots of ceremonial objects are also exhibited. Admission: NOK 30; children NOK 10

Waldermarsudde is a museum which exhibits Prince Eugen's work as influenced by Cubism. The museum was designed by a famous architect who created the Thiel House. Apart from the Prince's own work, there is an impressive collection of Swedish art, which is dated between the 1880s and the 1940s. Outside the museum, there is a thousand-year-old oak tree.
