The original Akershus Castle is located inside the fortress. At the Information Centre, there is an exhibition on the history of the fortress, and guided tours depart from here each day between May and September. Admission is free.

Holmenkollen hill on the west side of the city is famous for the enormous ski jump that can be seen from just about everywhere in Oslo. The most popular sports arena in Norway, Holmenkollen also contains the world's oldest Ski Museum and an exciting ski-simulator (on which visitors can try out the Holmenkollen ski jump themselves!). Holmenkollen hosts a variety of winter sports events, culminating in the annual ski festival in March. Even those not interested in winter sports should not miss the chance to enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the city.

Kayak Tours of Copenhagen Harbour

Fun With a Kayak
Fabrikmestervej, vej 13 til venstre, Holmen
København

With Holmen (the former marine area of Copenhagen, now a trend-setting place) as a base, a man called Ole has established a form of sightseeing and entertainment using kayaks. You can take a guided tour around Copenhagen Harbour by kayak, where you get to see all the old monuments and the new, exciting attractions. This is a fun and alternative way of experiencing Copenhagen, and from here, the city shows its most beautiful side. You can take the trip in the evening too, wearing forehead flashlights. These trips start in the centre, close to Thorvaldsens Museum. Another possibility is kayak polo, a newly-invented sport. This takes place in the harbour basin of Holmen and is meant for parties of between six and fifteen people. The prices vary but are quite high.

Langelinie

Copenhagen's Most Beautiful Area
Fra Esplanaden til Langeliniekajen
København 2100
This area could be described as the most beautiful in Copenhagen, and stretches from Esplanaden to Lystbådehavnen, the pier of Langelinie and Frihavnen. If you walk along the outer harbour of Copenhagen, you will be able to enjoy a breath of fresh air from Øresund. You will also pass Churchillparken with its English church, Frihedsmuseet (a landmark to World War II), the Gefion Fountain, the statues of Frederik IX and Princess Marie, Langeliniepavillionen restaurant, the Little Mermaid, and the Mylius-Erichsen Monument (to the people who died during the Greenland expedition 1906-07). Last but not least, is Frihavnen, with its warships and huge cruise liners, and recently a new housing and business district. From Langelinie you can see over to Holmen, where the yacht of the Royal Danish family, Dannebrog, usually lies anchored.

Magnificent natural scenery awaits you just a short distance away from Oslo (between ten and 20 minutes by car or bus). Maridalsvannet is one of the sources of drinking water for Oslo and an excellent location for day trips of various lengths. This is the source of the Akerselva Miljøpark river, but fishing and swimming are not allowed here. You can also visit the ruins of the Maria Bebudelses Kirke. Bus 37B will take you to Brekke, or you can get the train to Kjelsås.

Näsinneula Observation Tower

Highest observation tower in the Nordic countries

One of the best-known landmarks of Tampere, the tower commands spectacular views in all directions. Even the lift to the indoor lookout terrace(at a height of 120 meters) is an adventure, as the lift moves at six meters per second. The whole ride up takes 27 seconds. You can rent binoculars at the terrace and enjoy the scenery, or relax at the café. There is also an outdoor terrace nine meters below; you'll be surprised at how hard the wind blows at that altitude. Hours vary, so check ahead.

Observatory Hill

Observatory surrounded by parkland
20A Siltavuorenpenger
P. O. Box 14
Helsinki 00170
Tähtitorninmäki (Observatory Hill) is a delightful park as well as one of the city's best panoramic locations. When you climb up the hill from the direction of the Market Square, the first thing that catches your eye is the memorial to the Hapsburg shipwreck victims, designed by Gunnar Finne in 1939. Right next to the memorial is the German church. If you follow the path closest to the shore, up the hill, you'll come to the bronze Statue of the Shipwrecked, a well-known landmark designed by Robert Stigell in 1897. There is also a great view from the statue over to the Market Square, Katajanokka and the Suomenlinna sea fortress. Tähtitorninmäki got its name from the Tähtitorni, Observatory, which stands upon it. The observatory was designed by C.L. Engel and built in 1833. The top of the hill offers a great view all over the city. The most famous sight is probably what greets your eye when you stand in front of the observatory and look straight down Unioninkatu towards the district of Kallio.

Pispala

Colourful as a quilt
Pispalan harju
Tampere 33250
Pispala district on the Pispala ridge was founded in the late nineteenth century. No one actually planned this district - settlers just built their little cottages along the slopes in the manner they liked and could afford. This is why Pispala is a very colourful and peculiar housing district with small houses built very close to each other. The area is now protected by a building plan, so that its unique look will be preserved for future generations. Pispala is no longer a workers' district but more famous for its artists, authors and musicians. The plots are understandably very expensive here, because of the magnificent views over lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi.

Ramberget Mountain

Mountain with view of Gothenburg
Rambergsvägen
Gothenburg 41713
Ramberget is Gothenburg's highest mountain, rising 86 metres above sea level. It is situated on Hisingen, Sweden's fourth-largest island. Ramberget has a nice lookout point which offers a grand view over most parts of Gothenburg. When the sun is still shining, you can see Vinga lighthouse in the west. Next to Ramberget is Keilers park. The path up Ramberget is a steep one, but take a picnic basket with you and enjoy it on the mountaintop. To get here, take trams 2 or 5 to Wieselgrensplatsen.

Roskilde

The City of Many Opportunities
Roskilde Inlet
Roskilde
Roskilde 4000
+45 4631 6565 (Tourist Information)
http://www.destination-roskild...
info@destination-roskilde.dk
In the Middle Ages, Roskilde was a trading town, and in the Viking period it had been a centre for ship-building. The city is beautifully located at the end of Roskilde Inlet, 30km west of Copenhagen. It is easy to reach by both train and car. Roskilde offers a wide selection of interesting attractions for visitors, primarily the exciting Viking Ship Museum. Located just by the inlet, this museum's collection is based on archaeological finds of Viking ships in that particular area. Roskilde Cathedral, located at the highest point of the city, is also interesting and beautiful. Here, Danish kings and queens have been buried for the last 800 years. The Cathedral also shows the changes that have taken place in architectural styles in that time. The old ferry Sagafjord is famous for serving delicious meals while you enjoy the views over the inlet. The main street should also be mentioned, with its preserved old town houses and the lovely park. In general, the city offers lots of experiences and sights to see. Not far south of the city you will find Lejre Forsøgscenter and Ledreborg Slot.

StensParken

Park and panorama
Pilestredet,/Sporveisgaten
Oslo 0354
Another beautiful park inside central Oslo, this park has had many names. Stensparken comes from old Sten or Stein farm, closed down in the 1600s. On the north side of Stensparken is Blåsten, a small, natural environment and a paradise for adventurous children. Stensparken offers the usual pleasures of a park: a lovely place for having a picnic or for sunbathing on warm summer days. In the neighbourhood there are two streets with lots of very charming, mostly wooden buildings, bigger and more "castle-like" than those at Kampen, Rodeløkka or Damstredet (some other streets with old houses in Oslo). Look for Lyder Sagens gate and Aage Wolffs gate. Fagerborg Church is inside the park, close to a sculpture of famous Norwegian writer Sigrid Undset.

Älvsborgsbron Bridge

Bridge with a view of the harbour
Älvborgsbron
Gothenburg 414 71
Älvsborgsbron connects Gothenburg with the island of Hisingen, the fourth—largest island of Sweden. The bridge opened in 1966. It is 900 metres long, and its height is 45 metres. Sven Olof Asplund, who designed the bridge, also planned Kaknästornet, the television tower in Stockholm. If you walk to the middle of the bridge, you have a great view of the harbour entrance. Look to the west, and you will see the Älvsborgs Nya Fästning fortress. To get there take the number 9 tram from Brunnsparken to Jaegerdorffsplatsen. From the tram stop, it is about 15 minutes' walking distance.

Øresundsbroen Bridge

New Bridge Between Sweden and Denmark
Øresund
København
+45 7023 9060
http://osb.oeresundsbron.dk
kundeservice@oeresundsbron.com
The Oresundsbro bridge opened to create a new connection between the neighbouring countries of Sweden and Denmark on 1 July 2000. Along with a new highway on Amager and a fast train connection from the Central Station across Amager to Sweden, Oresundsbro unites the two countries not only geographically, but also culturally. The bridge is a hanging construction, beautiful in its engineering simplicity. The turns it takes across Oresund make the experience all the more extraordinary when you cross it. The bridge has so far not had the greatest possible success, because the users - especially the Danish ones - complain about the high prices for crossing. But the management is working on it, and price changes are on their way in the near future. The bridge makes it possible to take a day trip to the Swedish side, where a lot of exciting places await you. The shopping facilities in Malmo are quite good too.
