Swimmer's Paradise |
Amager Strandvej København 2300 +45 3366 3500 http://www.amager-strand.dk |
This is a big area with beaches near Copenhagen, containing also Kastrup fortress. It is not a very idyllic and natural beach, but it is quite clean and has views to gigantic gas containers, Øresundsbroen bridge to Sweden and a few islands. It is very popular amongst the people of Copenhagen in the summer. In the area, you will also find the outdoor swimming pool Helgoland, where you can swim in the winter, even if there is ice on the water. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Beaches, museums or a stroll |
Huk Aveny 35 Oslo 0286 +47 22 13 5280 |
Bygdøy is a peninsula packed with leisure activities for everyone. Many of the city's museums are situated here, and you can easily spend the whole day visiting them. The Vikingskiphuset are a must. There are also great beaches, which are excellent for swimming and sun-bathing. You could see the King's farm, or visit a small castle used as a summer residence by a previous king. Alternatively, take a pleasant stroll among the many magnificent houses of this affluent residential area (home to former prime minister Gro Harlem Brundtland). The best way to get there in the summer is by ferry from the pier in front of the Town Hall. Bus number 30 will get you there all year round. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Harbour of Copenhagen |
Nordre Toldbod 7 København +45 3347 9999 |
The best way to see the harbour is by going on one of the Canal Tours. On these trips the tourist is presented with many sights that are located along the Copenhagen waterfront. Admire the castles including Christiansborg and Amalienborg, charming old areas like Nyhavn and Christianshavn, churches such as Holmens Kirke and Marmorkirken, and modern buildings like the headquarters of A. P. Møller or the Black Diamond. The harbour of Copenhagen stretches from Nordhavn and Frihavnen deep into the heart of the city. From as far back as the 1930s, the harbour has been strongly criticized. However, with newer initiatives, like the new building work at Frihavnen, the harbour is becoming a recreational area for the people of Copenhagen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nice place for a stroll |
between Pitkäsilta Bridge and the railway Helsinki 00170-0053 |
The inlet made up of the Kaisaniemenlahti and Eläintarhanlahti bays, between Pitkäsilta Bridge and the railway tracks, is a great area for walks. The streets are wide and in a good condition, and there is plenty to see. Kaisaniemenranta is the most beautiful part of the area, a wide boulevard surrounded by trees, framed on one side by the bay and on the other side by old wooden houses and stunning gardens. At Pitkänsillanranta the sights include the leafy shore and the gorgeous buildings looming above, and as you move further to Säästöpankinranta there are parks and a view to the fountain in the middle of the bay. On the opposite side of the bay lie Tokoinranta and Eläintarhantie, an area known not just for architectural sights such as the Helsinki City Theatre, but also for its parks. Most Helsinkiites know Tokoinlahti for the tent that is erected there during the annual Helsinki Festival, as a venue for performances by top Finnish and international artists. Nude beach |
Bygdøy Oslo 0287 |
This is a beautiful beach, where you do not need any clothes. It is at a nice cycle-ride from central Oslo, or you could go on skates. You are not allowed to play your radio here (unless you have headphones), or run around with your camera pointing at people; if you don't do these things, you will certainly have a nice time. There is a kiosk that sells ice cream and soft drinks in the summer, and a restaurant just ten minutes away. Nice walking tracks and other beaches are nearby. Bus 30 goes to Huk. Art and nature by the Oslo fjord |
Ljansbrukveien 2-4 Oslo 1250 |
Hvervenbukta is a place to visit for many reasons, one being the workshops, where pottery, textiles, jewellery, hand-woven products, gilding, paintings, glassware and furniture are made. This is not a gallery, but you can make appointments with the artists to see their work. Another reason is the scenery. You can walk by the beach, within unspoiled nature, or go for a swim in the Oslo fjord if you want to. In summer it is also possible to camp here. The houses here date from the times of the old Stubljan farm built in 1765, which burned down in 1913. You can still see the ruins. The other buildings are used by the artists, and there is a cafe and a restaurant down at the beach. The cafe is open every Sunday in winter and Tuesday to Sunday in the summer. The restaurant is only open in the summer. The best thing about Hvervenbukta is how all the different elements merge into one; the studios, the nature, the old houses and the campsite make a beautiful whole. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Palace by lake Karlberg |
Karlbergs Slottsväg Solna 17173 +46 (0)8 5082 8508 (Turistbyra) |
Karlberg palace is beautifully situated by lake Karlberg, and it feels entirely isolated in spite of being located practically in the centre. The palace is used as military barracks today, but if you pass by at night you may see the famous ghost, The White Lady, appear at one of the windows. The palace is not open to the public, but this is a very peaceful and pleasant spot for a stroll, especially when the pulse of the city becomes too fast and unbearable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fun With a Kayak |
Fabrikmestervej, vej 13 til venstre, Holmen København +45 4050 4006 http://www.kajakole.dk kajakole@mail.tele.dk |
With Holmen (the former marine area of Copenhagen, now a trend-setting place) as a base, a man called Ole has established a form of sightseeing and entertainment using kayaks. You can take a guided tour around Copenhagen Harbour by kayak, where you get to see all the old monuments and the new, exciting attractions. This is a fun and alternative way of experiencing Copenhagen, and from here, the city shows its most beautiful side. You can take the trip in the evening too, wearing forehead flashlights. These trips start in the centre, close to Thorvaldsens Museum. Another possibility is kayak polo, a newly-invented sport. This takes place in the harbour basin of Holmen and is meant for parties of between six and fifteen people. The prices vary but are quite high. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Breathtaking nature |
Maridalen Oslo 0890 +47 90 68 4145 maridalensvenner@mobilpost.com |
Magnificent natural scenery awaits you just a short distance away from Oslo (between ten and 20 minutes by car or bus). Maridalsvannet is one of the sources of drinking water for Oslo and an excellent location for day trips of various lengths. This is the source of the Akerselva Miljøpark river, but fishing and swimming are not allowed here. You can also visit the ruins of the Maria Bebudelses Kirke. Bus 37B will take you to Brekke, or you can get the train to Kjelsås. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The City of Many Opportunities |
Roskilde Inlet Roskilde Roskilde 4000 +45 4631 6565 (Tourist Information) http://www.destination-roskild... info@destination-roskilde.dk |
In the Middle Ages, Roskilde was a trading town, and in the Viking period it had been a centre for ship-building. The city is beautifully located at the end of Roskilde Inlet, 30km west of Copenhagen. It is easy to reach by both train and car. Roskilde offers a wide selection of interesting attractions for visitors, primarily the exciting Viking Ship Museum. Located just by the inlet, this museum's collection is based on archaeological finds of Viking ships in that particular area. Roskilde Cathedral, located at the highest point of the city, is also interesting and beautiful. Here, Danish kings and queens have been buried for the last 800 years. The Cathedral also shows the changes that have taken place in architectural styles in that time. The old ferry Sagafjord is famous for serving delicious meals while you enjoy the views over the inlet. The main street should also be mentioned, with its preserved old town houses and the lovely park. In general, the city offers lots of experiences and sights to see. Not far south of the city you will find Lejre Forsøgscenter and Ledreborg Slot. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Swimming with easy access |
Saltholmsvägen Gothenburg 42676 |
Most beaches and bathing places in the Gothenburg area are hard to get to if you do not have a car, or are not prepared to ride a bike for 45 minutes. Saltholmen is the only one that you can reach by tram, which is why there are also lots of people there. The crowds are more of a nuisance on the tram than at your destination; however, there is always space to lie on the rocks. Access to Saltholmen is a bit restricted due to the rocks, which makes it tricky for elderly or disabled visitors. The good thing about the rocks, however, is that they hide from view the parking lots close by. To get here, take tram 4 to Saltholmen. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rocky bathing spot with a rural atmosphere |
Smithska vägen Gothenburg 42166 |
Smithska Udden is the largest bathing spot in Gothenburg, and the wide stretch of rocks never fills up completely, not even on warm summer days. In spite of being quite close to the city, the area is rural with cottages close to the sea. It can be hard to get to Smithska Udden if you do not have a car or a bike. It can be done, but you have to be patient when changing buses and waiting for the next one. To get here, take trams 1 or 7 to Frölunda torg. Switch to bus number 92 to Näsbovägen. If you have a car, the only problem is finding a parking space. If you do not mind walking, you can park at Näsets large parking lot a few hundred meters before the turning to Smithska udden. Popular lake and hiking area |
Sognsveien Oslo 0863 |
Lake Sognsvann and its surrounding countryside make one of the most popular choices for a city-dweller's day out, both in summer and winter. During the hottest months, the lake is excellent for swimming and sun-bathing, and when the lake freezes over later in the year, it becomes a huge, natural ice rink, popular with skaters of all ages. Sognsvann is the terminus for the Sognsvann branch of the underground, so it is very easy to get to whether you come from the city centre or from Majorstuen. Marked trails take you straight into the woods, with a variety of alternatives for short and long walks. In the winter, the same paths, now snow-covered, are used for cross-country skiing.
