This neighborhood, located directly north of the colorful Fremont district, takes its name from the lake that sits in the center of the area. This small lake was formed by the same glacial forces that created the more prominent Lake Union and Lake Washington. The lake is named for its vulnerability to algae blooms, a trait that caused the United States Surveyors to originally designate it as "Lake Green" during the 1885 survey of the area. The lake is surrounded by parkland, including a 2.8-mile paved pathway used by runners, rollerbladers, and bikers. The park also offers swimming, theater, and a community center.
