Seattle |
Actually a distinct city and separate town from neighboring Seattle, Mercer Island has developed its own unique character. The island takes its name from the Mercer brothers, who visited for hunting and berry-picking before it became a permanent settlement. The area retains some of that natural appeal in the form of well tended parks. Serious development of the island began in the late 1800s when a popular resort, the Calkins Hotel, was built along with a ferry dock to service it. Since then the island has developed into a prosperous residential community and is also known for having a top-notch school system. It boasts one of the highest per-capita incomes in the state of Washington, a figure that is boosted somewhat by the presence of Microsoft co-founder and billionaire, Paul Allen.
