If you have a sweet tooth and are looking for a moist German Chocolate Cake or a delicious Milky Way Mocha, this cafe will take you to another world. Bauhaus Books and Coffee

Hip coffeehouse
301 East Pine Street
Seattle, WA 98122
United States
+1 206 625 1600
Located just up the street from Fillipi Books, this cozy book nook is the perfect spot to enjoy your latest acquisitions over a cup of coffee. The bookshelves are crammed with used books to the high ceilings, and huge floor-to-ceiling windows allow patrons glimpses of passersby and the distant Space Needle. The art books here were on sale at one time, but are now only for show. Single-serving, cellophane-wrapped Ding Dongs, popular with customers, sit next to a variety of standard coffeehouse treats. Get a taste of the New York Times (on sale at the cash register), and a thirst for the least-acidic coffee blends in town.

Nestled in an alley just above 42nd Street, this cafe has long been a favorite of students, faculty and visitors to the University District. The espresso drinks and teas are cheap ($1 for an Americano) and a variety of sweet treats are available all day. The space is long and narrow with dark wood and brick walls. Three computers are available in the back room. Tables in the main areas are packed together tightly and you are likely to hear hearty conversations.

Cafe Solstice

Hip University Perk
4116 University Way NE
Seattle, WA 98105
United States
+1 206 675 0850
http://www.cafesolstice.com
Fresh roasted coffee has a place in the heart of many Seattle residents, and Cafe Solstice has made a name for itself in the U-District as the local hipster favorite. If you are looking for a spot to stretch out your legs, you may want to continue the search-- but if you long for a mellow atmosphere, tasty hot lunches, and plenty of people-watching opportunities, Solstice is your place. The coffee, food, and other drinks are made with special care and the ambiance is rich with mismatched tables and worn velvet couches. The cafe's walls are often decorated with local artwork, and small performances are held on the stage inside, though music is pulsing in the background at all times. Be sure to sample some of the pastries at the counter, as coffee and cookies are a must-have combination on rainy afternoons.

In Italian, "vita" means "life" and that's what this three-shop operation provides. Always scalding hot, always a double shot and always served by hip young baristas, the coffee here goes well with the fresh pastries and even with the dark, slightly grimy decor. Just remember never to order a single shot as that will mark you as a Vita novice. Heaven forbid. Coffee Messiah

Caffeine religion
1554 East Olive Way
Seattle, WA 98102
United States
+1 206 861 8233
The sign says, "Caffeine Saves," and good coffee is the sacrament. The pseudo-religious decoration can be a bit overpowering to the unwary, but the quirkiness matches the neighborhood. Try a fresh doughnut from the deep fryer behind the counter with your late-night or early-morning cup. The shop features Open Mike on Wednesday nights and, more often than not, live entertainment on Saturdays. Credit cards are not accepted. Street parking can be tight.

Cowgirls Espresso

Hot in a Whole New Way
1734 S Central Avenue
Seattle, WA 98032
United States
+1 253 856 7319
http://www.cowgirlsespresso.com
This coffee chain developed in Seattle with the idea that baristas wearing less clothing attracts more customers. The story goes that one hot summer day an employee asked to wear a bikini top to work. This proved that sex does sell, and developed into a regular bikini-themed day. Eventually, the baristas were wearing sexy costumes everyday including military and school girl outfits. The kiosks are covered in black and white spots, but they definitely aren't the attention-grabber. The coffee is, well, hot. There are now many Cowgirls locations in the US, Australia, Europe, and Canada.

Place your order at the back with the friendly, languid baristas, then cart your Triple Mocha to one of the rickety tables in the window or upstairs to the loft. The bar serves a few baked goods, but it's the strong coffee, and the chatty patrons waiting for a movie at the Harvard Exit across the street, that have made Joe's name. One only wishes the bar stayed open for discussions of the late show.

Pop in anytime for a café au lait at the elegantly fluted tin-topped bar, or arrange a luncheon rendezvous for some creamy sweet garlic soup with asparagus and poached egg. For dinner, order the country pate and nibble on baguette while waiting for the signature roasted chicken for two (takes 1 hour). Framed blackboards announce daily specials, cheese selections and desserts. Wine served by the glass, demi-pichet, pichet (pichet=pitcher) or bottle makes it easy to sample several intriguing options. -Kate Navarro

Right now chai is the hot drink, so to speak. Have a glass of the thick sweet tea here. This slightly nutty place has a sunken seating area, a few grimy computers by the entrance (free use with drink purchase), a little shopping nook (greeting cards, incense, etc.), and jars and jars of teas and herbs. Music groups play on the corner stage in the evening. Try the Morning Glory Chai, spicy and steamed with milk. Simple comfort foods include grilled cheese sandwiches and garden burgers.

Still Life in Fremont Coffeehouse

Stress-free coffeehouse
709 North 35th Street
Seattle, WA 98103
United States
+1 206 547 9850
It seems that each Seattle neighborhood has a cafe that perfectly reflects its personality. In Fremont, it is undoubtedly this light, bright and slightly eclectic coffeehouse. Founded in the 1960s, its activist roots have mostly been quietly absorbed. Nevertheless, the inexpensive, generous portions of ham-free split pea soup, vegetable-crammed salads and whole grain breads still harken back to the early days. Outdoor seating is available in warm weather, but the long tables and plush couches inside invite long conversations any time of year.

With blond wood, dark green accents, wicker chairs, magazine racks and perky baristas, these coffeehouses imitate and therefore rival Starbucks. Young urban professionals flock here, lugging cell phones and laptops. Teenagers have nervous first dates here. Stay-at-home moms meet friends for midmorning snacks, children in tow. Tully's coffee is a bit less bitter than Starbucks, and the company hasn't yet followed the sandwich-cafe concept of the Cafe Starbucks bistros, but other than that, the experience is similar. Branches, of course, are everywhere.

Ugly Mug Cafe

Classy cafe
1309 Northeast 43rd Street
Seattle, WA 98105

+1 206 547 3219
This University District eatery caters to scholars in tweedy jackets, students in jeans and T-shirts, neighbors in just about anything, and visitors, also in just about anything but with bags. Unlike most University District cafes, this one prides itself on offering an atmosphere of quiet culture blended with the more usual student banter. The food at this classy little cafe is always imaginative, and more healthy than typical cafe fare. The veggie focaccia is highly recommended and the smoked turkey sandwich is a meal or two in itself. Fresh, flavorful, home-style soups and sandwiches abound here. Credit cards are not accepted.
