Independent bookstore |
414 Broadway East Seattle, WA 98102 United States +1 206 323 8842 |
In a town packed with bookstores, this one thrives by providing a large selection of books on many subjects, including a good collection of mysteries, biographies, history, the latest in fiction and general non-fiction and plenty of paperbacks, plus an excellent selection of gay and lesbian titles. The atmosphere is clean and comfortable. The staff is knowledgeable. The store offers an incentive to regular buyers, a free 11th book equal in value to the average value of the first 10. The Heart of Capitol Hill |
401 Broadway Avenue East Seattle, WA 98102 United States +1 206 322 1610 |
This mall has undergone many changes over the years but continues to meet the needs of the Capitol Hill locals. Besides being the only public space protected from the rain, the market also offers the only public parking garage. It does have a Gap, an Urban Outfitters, a Gold's Gym and a QFC, but it's also got funky stores and restaurants with a twist. Independent vendors sell jewelry and other knick-knacks from pushcarts, and there are indispensable services such as a video rental shop, a shoe repair shop, and a florist. While it functions as an indoor shopping center, the layout evokes its past as a slightly more hip and fiercely independent public center. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in the middle of the hip Capitol Hill neighborhood, this secondhand clothing store sells, trades and buys women's and men's clothing as well as shoes and accessories. Because of the area's ever-evolving fashion sense, the store tends to be a little trendier than its competition. The in-store purchasers will pay cash for your secondhand items. You must be 18 or over to sell or trade. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Funky clothing for both sexes |
317 East Pine Street Seattle, WA 98122 United States +1 206 623 5339 http://www.lefrockonline.com |
From hats to handbags, this small shop carries all sorts of vintage treasures. The quality of goods is excellent, but the sizes tend to be toward the tiny side. Styles vary considerably. Find a fabulous zoot suit or a zippy pair of orange platform boots. Accessories are often from the 40s and 50s. Think hand made beads, sequins and ornate styling. Those with a fearless sense of style should check out the bargain balcony. With a little imagination, the scarves of yesteryear could become a whole new wardrobe. Review © 2007, Wcities |

General used books |
425 15th Avenue East Seattle, WA 98112 United States +1 206 329 3586 |
Piled into one of the smallest shops you'll ever wriggle into, in a wee house on bustling 15th Avenue East, this satisfying collection of used books includes literature, history, philosophy and criticism. Surprisingly, Don Glover's teeny shop has done well enough to expand into two other neighborhoods. He's got a shop at 6512 Roosevelt Way Northeast, (+1 206 523 4217) and another at 8570 Greenwood Ave North, (+1 206 781 4680). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Basic 50s-style barbershop |
407 15th Avenue East Seattle, WA 98112 United States +1 206 322 5651 |
The traditional red, white and blue barber pole announces the presence of a gruff, 50s-style barbershop. Two barber chairs upholstered in red, two mirrors and sinks, and a scattering of men's magazines create that authentic macho look. The one oddly feminine touch is the figurative art for sale on the walls. Don't come here for hairstyling. Chop, chop and you're done. Last seating is at 5:15p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small but good thrift shop |
2501 South Jackson St Seattle, WA 98144 United States +1 206 322 7550 |
This thrift shop on raucous Jackson Street has become remarkably popular, both for its slightly later evening hours (perfect for after-work browsing) and for its constantly changing selection of good-quality clothing, shoes, hats, dishware and bric-a-brac. The selection here is usually a bit more stylish than at Goodwill or the Salvation Army. The prices, however, remain low. Proceeds provide food and services to people suffering from AIDS. Whether you wear shiny clothing every day or only on special holidays, you're bound to find a fabulous outfit in this crowded little shop. Outstandingly frivolous accessories range from glittery platform boots to feathered purses. The clothing selection changes weekly and includes sparkly club wear and elaborate velvet jackets and gowns. Vintage treasures |
324 15th Avenue East Capital Hill Store Seattle, WA 98112 United States +1 206 324 1582 http://www.michaelfarrelljewel... |
With low ceilings and display cases padded in lush velvet, this is a shrine to vintage costume jewelry and watch design. Wish you could look as elegant as Edward and Mrs. Simpson? Browse this shop's collection of mid-century wrist pieces and gem-studded brooches. The watch repair service is excellent. If you've got a broken mechanical watch, give this place a try. Computers and coffee |
1720 East Olive Way Seattle, WA 98102 United States +1 206 328 3731 http://www.onlinecoffeeco.com |
This is a cafe, hence the "coffee" part, with computers, hence the "online" part, but it doesn't sell coffee beans over the Web. Outdoor seating, tasty baked treats and strong espresso make the cyber half of the cafe seem like an afterthought, but it's certainly there. Computers cost 12 cents a minute, with 20 minutes of free access if you buy something to drink. The sunlight streaming in the windows perks things up too. There's also another location downtown at 1111 First Avenue, (+1 206 381 1191). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Major music scene |
618 Broadway East Seattle, WA 98102 United States |
If you're into the music scene, you may want to make this your main music store. The sales associates are well-informed on the latest bands and the hippest music and they'll probably be able to predict what the next wave will bring. The store stocks a great collection of new and used CDs, records and cassettes. An updated display will keep you informed of the artists performing in Seattle. The listening stations let you hear the music before you pay for it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An Edgy Boutique |
225 Broadway Avenue E Seattle, WA 98102 United States +1 206 726 3300 |
There are at least two other shops in town named for the plume on Cyrano de Bergerac's hat, but they've got nothing on the fabulousness of this Capitol Hill shop. Garish nail polish, poufy scarves, snug hats, chunky sunglasses and delicate jewelry take up half this shop, while cheap party clothing for pretty young things, male and female, occupies the other half. If you're looking for glittery, stretchy, synthetic tops, miniskirts and trousers, look here. But the serious shopper usually heads for the extensive shoe section at the front of the store, where solid meets trendy in the form of boots, oxfords, loafers and strappy dance shoes. Brands include the hip American label Bronx and the classier Italian Natha. Check out the half-off sale rack for good deals. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pretty in pink |
119 Summit Avenue East Seattle, WA 98102 United States +1 206 405 2883 http://www.prettyparlor.com/ |
A visit to this shop will surely revive "Legally Blonde" culture, with the decor boldly proclaiming that feminine is fine and cute is cool! You'll find a whole range of vintage products—crystal jewelry, petticoats, silk lanterns, and much more. The in-house Ruthie's Sewing Shop allows you to get your clothes custom made, not compromising on the fit. If gentle men do manage to get themselves here, there is a range for them too with rock, cowboy and Hawaiian options. Overall, the place can be a bit pricey, but the products and the great service make up for it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

222 Yale Avenue North Seattle, WA 98109 United States +1 206 223 1944 / +1 888 873 1938 http://www.rei.com/stores/seat... |
With a three-floor climbing wall enclosed in glass, this outdoor emporium is hard to miss. The store offers a shopping experience that is almost as much fun as the great outdoors. Customers test parkas and Gore-Tex windbreakers in a special rain booth. Hikers stomp up a simulated hill in the shoe department to test hiking boots, and climbers scale the rock face for a spectacular view of the skyline. Outside, a coffee bar provides hot drinks, while inside you'll find a juice bar and small restaurant. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Vintage galore |
312 Broadway Avenue East Seattle, WA 98102 United States +1 206 329 2200 http://www.redlightvintage.com/ |
This two-story vintage store on Broadway is a treat for the hip and voguish on a tight budget. However, for a new-and-used shop, it can also be termed as pricey. There is a counter here, where you can "buy", "sell" and "trade" all your old clothes for someone else's old ones. But don't be surprised if your merchandise is rejected.... they are very particular about what they accept. You'll find fashions from the 50's, 60's and 70's—corduroy pants, Levi's, jackets, halters, slips, bathing suits and a lot of accessories including belts, wigs, sunglasses and not to forget roller skates, all lined up for you to pick from. Secondhand clothing for career women |
430 15th Avenue East Seattle, WA 98112 United States +1 206 324 2569 |
For a secondhand shop, this one is remarkably well-lit and arranged, and once you get a look at some of the labels, you'll understand why. This isn't a designer thrift shop, but a good percentage of its wares are seconds from department stores and higher-end boutiques, while the rest are gently used professional and casual attire. So, if you need stylish clothing at good prices, this is the place. The selection changes regularly. Just watch out for the inadequately curtained dressing rooms at the back. Review © 2007, Wcities |
