Memoirs from the 'discovery' of America |
Avenida de la Constitución Seville 41001 Spain +34 95 422 5158 |
The Renaissance style, quadrangular floor and large central patio are perhaps the most important characteristics of the Archivo General de Indias (General Archives of the Indies). In 1785 King Carlos III decided to transform the city's fish market into an archive for documents and testimonies from the New World, which up until then had been scattered throughout various territories. In this building, a meeting place for researchers, nearly 40,000 documents that deal with the first expeditions to the New World, from the moment of the 'discovery' to the 19th Century, are carefully filed, making the Archivo a cornerstone for research of this historical period. A visit here is a trip through the development of trade between Seville and the New World, especially with the 'Old and New World Commerce' exhibit. In the surroundings of the Archivo, you can enjoy views of the catedral, Giralda (La), Santa Cruz neighborhood, and Reales Alcázares (Los). Review © 2007, Wcities |

This cafeteria-bar enjoys an ample spectrum of clientele. Often frequented by homosexuals, the atmosphere here is very avant-garde, with the most modern people in town. Starting at midday they serve tapas (hors-d'ouevre sized portions of local and traditional food), all vegetarian and very original. Later, after your afternoon coffee or tea, they will serve you whatever you desire. The music is the best thing here, if you like trip hop and other new musical trends. Music and a Metropolitan Atmosphere |
Calle Vulcano 4 Seville 41002 Spain |
Located in the City Centre, in the popular Alameda de Hercules, there are several coffee shops and clubs which have very characteristic styles. They are the places where people going to write, read a book while drinking a coffee or to listen jazz; amongst these cafes stands out the Cafe Sonoro. It's a little hidden place that is small but a true gem of a coffee shop. Its outside terrace is usually very crowded when the weather is cooperating, and the inside has a sort of cosmopolitan feel to it with a soft lighting throughout. The club also offers popular music, at least for jazz lovers. There is also an impressive tea menu as well. Café Sonoro stays open late, so you can drink a coffee into the wee hours of the morning. -Joaquín Montaño Review © 2007, Wcities |

Café Bar Montoto 14 is really an atypical and multi-purpose place. It has a minimalist style, which makes for a very comfortable atmosphere, but what they offer is not minimalist at all! In the morning, breakfast is served and accompanied by very chilled-out music. Later on in the day, tapas begin to appear: Vegetable Meatball, Fish Cake and other original dishes will delight you as a customer. And, at night another change takes place, with beer, drinks and blaring Rock n' Roll. Live music is performed every Thursday. Classic films in the open air |
Calle San Fernando 4 San Fernando, 4 Seville 41004 Spain |
One of the greatest traditions in Andalusia is to go to an open air cinema to enjoy the pleasant temperature of the summer nights. The commercial summer cinemas have practically all closed, so this activity now continues mainly thanks to public institutions. The University of Seville has done this for many years, dedicating its screens to classic films, on many occasions silent films. During May and June it runs a series of films based on different themes. The project, very successful amongst university students, has the collaboration of the Association of Writers and Filmmakers of Andalusia (ASECAN). The price of entrance is around 300 pesetas. Famous for constructivist paintings |
Plaza del Triunfo 1 Seville 41004 Spain |
This is one of the buildings that has most recently undergone work to modernise and redesign it to turn it into a gallery. The artwork on display tends to be contemporary Constructivist painting. These works of art seem to set out in practice the basic concepts of Constructivism. The paintings belonging to this genre are characterised by their geometric shapes and the strict sense of order reflected in them. In spite of being representational, they sometimes come close to abstract art because they are so schematic. Color is one of the most important elements, since it helps to establish order in the composition. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For a strictly jazz experience, head to this local favorite. Jazz Corner's ambiance and music spell complete devotion to jazz. The bar is the work of architect Pilar Hernaiz and shaped to resemble Chet Atkins' Gibson, it's the perfect setting for a night of jazz and nightcaps. With concerts and jam sessions by regional artists, Jazz Corner is Seville's best offering in live jazz. If bass guitars and saxophones excite you, you've just found your paradise! House owned by the Alba family |
Calle Dueñas 5 Seville 41003 Spain +34 95 422 0956 |
This palace is the property and residence of the Duchess of Alba, the person with the most noble titles in Spain. The Machado brothers were born here, and this fact is depicted in the painted tiles on the palace's outside walls, otherwise built of brick. Although it is not open to the public, it is worth having a look at from the outside. Its central location means that you are likely to walk past it on a stroll through the centre anyway. The palace gate is a typical place to have your photo taken, with the flower-filled courtyard in the background. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Orange is quite different than the rest of the nightlife in the city. It opens at 8a to serve breakfast, and in the afternoon it becomes at very lively café. The walls are painted in different eye catching colors and contrast beautifully baroque-style lamps. From 11p onwards there is a room that is ideal for chatting with friends, and another where more up-to.day music is played. Sundays you can enjoy Flamenco shows, which take place in the evening. Orange has also a no smoking area, something that can be very difficult to find in the city. -Joaquín Montaño Review © 2007, Wcities |

A new outook for your nights in Seville |
Calle Procurador 19 Seville 41010 Spain |
If you like a healthy atmosphere permeated with an artistic aura, this is your place. The Sala El Cachorro, better known as La Ortiga, is a peaceful and environmentally-friendly bar. In the afternoon, you can admire their art exhibitions while having tea or coffee. Later on, if you get hungry, they have Greek vegetable or chicken pitas, both cooked with a secret sauce. Or if you prefer, they have potatoes in a spicy sauce, among other options. To drink try what they call Llín (Botellín - small beer), a chilled beer. Don't worry, because the friendly owner, María, will understand you no matter how you order it. At night you can almost always catch a show (theatre, comedy, acoustic music or fire show) in the indoors patio. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Surrealist paintings |
Calle Luis Montoto 112 Seville 41005 Spain |
Imitating the work of Joan Miró, the artists who exhibit in this gallery will allow you to penetrate into a world of imagination. The works are displayed for approximately 40 days. Surrealism is the style most frequently exhibited here by young artists who re-work old paintings using the figurative elements and adding all kinds of anthropomorphical elements and objects - animal, vegetable, astral - that come out from the painting, all in very schematic Miró style. In all the compositions, you can see the painter's tendency to fill the whole canvas, and this factor together with the colour contrasts creates an impressive dynamic impression. Sculptures influenced by different styles |
Calle Chicarreros Seville 41004 Spain +34 95 459 7100 |
This gallery's sculpture exhibitions usually last about 45 days. The young artists who exhibit in this gallery, sponsored by Caja San Fernando, use iron as their main material, and show great skill in working with it. The sculptures are given very varied connotations, and the empty spaces left are a perfect complement to the rest of the work. They are sculptures full of creativity that manage to combine the language of the most absolute abstract art with naturalism. You can enjoy this form of static art, and let your imagination fly free. Sculpture and paintings |
Calle Albareda 17 Seville 41001 Spain +34 95 421 6708 |
Among the artwork exhibited here you can find watercolours and a large number of sculptures. The exhibitions change every month. Entering the terrain of cubism, the artists change the language of the painting by geometrizing the shapes. Stretching the perspectives emphasises the figures compared to the background. With regard to the sculptures, which are also influenced by cubism, you can observe a concept of space that does not follow traditions, in which the importance given to empty spaces is one of the predominant features, especially in the pieces that use metal. You can find impressive works of art displayed here together with very well defined and sensual volumes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Situated in the centre of Seville, very close to La Campana, this is an old cinema converted into a theatre after the decline of cinema at the end of the 70's. A slice of city street made bar |
Calle Matahacas 5 Seville 41003 Spain |
Not too many years ago it was one of the breeding grounds of the blues groups of the city. The decoration and atmosphere are its most attractive aspects, besides the varied music they play. The entire place reproduces a section of an 'underground' street, in comic and graffiti. Here, you can sit down on a city sidewalk, dance under a street lamp or smoke on a park bench. There is also a pool table. It closes very late, so it's usually crammed full of people until dawn. Ideal for 'professional' all-night party-hoppers. Review © 2007, Wcities |
