Memoirs from the 'discovery' of America |
Avenida de la Constitución Seville 41001 Spain +34 95 422 5158 |
The Renaissance style, quadrangular floor and large central patio are perhaps the most important characteristics of the Archivo General de Indias (General Archives of the Indies). In 1785 King Carlos III decided to transform the city's fish market into an archive for documents and testimonies from the New World, which up until then had been scattered throughout various territories. In this building, a meeting place for researchers, nearly 40,000 documents that deal with the first expeditions to the New World, from the moment of the 'discovery' to the 19th Century, are carefully filed, making the Archivo a cornerstone for research of this historical period. A visit here is a trip through the development of trade between Seville and the New World, especially with the 'Old and New World Commerce' exhibit. In the surroundings of the Archivo, you can enjoy views of the catedral, Giralda (La), Santa Cruz neighborhood, and Reales Alcázares (Los). Review © 2007, Wcities |

A Chalcolithic settlement |
Plaza de España 9 Casa de la Cultura Seville, Seville 41907 Spain |
The set of dolmens in the Valencina de la Concepcion district of Seville can be found on a hill in Aljarafe. The dolmens date from 2000 B.C., that is, the Eneolithic or Chalcolithic period, the transition period between the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. This is therefore a set of dolmens that date from a relatively late prehistoric period. There are about 20 dolmens in this area. You can visit one called La Pastora with a 46m-long passage and a shorter one known as Matarrubilla. To round off your visit to the monument, you can watch a short film in the Casa de Cultura in Valencina de la Concepcion where you can also see an exhibition of the objects found during excavation work. Visits must be arranged by telephone. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Famous for constructivist paintings |
Plaza del Triunfo 1 Seville 41004 Spain |
This is one of the buildings that has most recently undergone work to modernise and redesign it to turn it into a gallery. The artwork on display tends to be contemporary Constructivist painting. These works of art seem to set out in practice the basic concepts of Constructivism. The paintings belonging to this genre are characterised by their geometric shapes and the strict sense of order reflected in them. In spite of being representational, they sometimes come close to abstract art because they are so schematic. Color is one of the most important elements, since it helps to establish order in the composition. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Concentrates on murals |
Calle Castelar 40 Seville 41003 Spain +34 95 491 5668 |
As well as the exhibitions of paintings, sculpture, collages, etc. displayed in this gallery, most of the works are painted murals, a genre typical of the 20s when murals were more popular than paintings done on the more traditional easel. The work of young artists who use this style shows a great desire to express and reflect the magnitude of social scenes, and they challenge the observer to study and appreciate them. The temporary exhibitions tend to last about 20 days and are then replaced by new work. Review © 2007, Wcities |

In the landscapes you can observe a predilection for light and the use of a wide range of colours, including for the garden scenes. You can also admire the use of thick paintwork and light brush strokes that gives the composition a great feeling of movement. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Exhibition of abstract art |
Calle De Miguel Cid 80 Seville 41002 Spain |
This gallery in the centrally-located San Lorenzo area has put on more than 200 exhibitions, the majority of which have been of paintings and photographs, and on occasion sculptures and performances. The exhibitions change every 20 days. There has been a common strand linking them all, and the predominant tendency is abstract more than representational art; above all there is a preference for personal styles. As well as enjoying the art, you can also have a drink and try some typical Sevillian food in the bar downstairs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Landscape photography |
Pasaje Mallol 10 Seville 41003 Spain +34 95 441 6526 |

There are also cityscapes: streets, shops, offices. You feel almost like you are on a journey, transported to places of such natural beauty, and then you find yourself back in the real world, looking at the routine of daily life. Oil paintings |
Calle Mariano de Cavia 4 Seville 41001 Spain +34 95 456 1084 |
The technique most often-used by the artists who exhibit in this gallery is that of oil on canvas. The exhibitions last about two months. These young artists show marked influences from the Vanguardism of the 1930's. The paintings can almost be described as abstract, and use a limited range of colours. There are also exhibitions of representational art, including still-lifes and landscapes, with personal touches such as using thick paint work. The use of colour is interesting especially in the landscapes, as the artists almost always choose tones from the same range of colours. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mainly Surrealist paintings |
Calle Virgen de Luján 39 Seville 41011 Spain |
This gallery exhibits a great number of works by a number of different artists. The exhibitions last one month. Among the many styles on display here, you can see fantastical and surreal iconographs that have the ability to transport the observer to a dream-like world, just as Dalí did with his work. There are faces and people in these pictures that are like monsters, although they do not cause fear nor unpleasant feelings, since the imaginative young artists responsible for them manage to give them an ironic twist. The pictures also contain strange configurations and elements such as flowers and plants that use a wide range of colours full of contrasts. Review © 2007, Wcities |

City of the Roman Empire |
Avenida de Extremadura 2 Seville, Seville 41970 Spain |
This archaeological site called Itálica was a Roman city founded by Scipio more than 2,200 years ago. It's an impressive area where you can see some real marvels of Roman culture like mosaics, a theatre, Roman baths and a majestic amphitheatre where the famous gladiator fights once took place. Itálica is the birthplace of the Roman emperors Trajano and Adriano. It's worth also visiting Seville's Archeological Museum in the Plaza de América. There's a regular bus service to the site from the Plaza de Armas bus station and there are good bars and restaurants nearby where you can sample fine local food. Review © 2007, Wcities |

House owned by the Alba family |
Calle Dueñas 5 Seville 41003 Spain +34 95 422 0956 |
This palace is the property and residence of the Duchess of Alba, the person with the most noble titles in Spain. The Machado brothers were born here, and this fact is depicted in the painted tiles on the palace's outside walls, otherwise built of brick. Although it is not open to the public, it is worth having a look at from the outside. Its central location means that you are likely to walk past it on a stroll through the centre anyway. The palace gate is a typical place to have your photo taken, with the flower-filled courtyard in the background. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Such is the tradition of this event in Sevillian life that more and more people each year come to learn about the various aspects of the world of the Sevillian Brotherhoods, who bring their own unique goods and even their formal processions, assuring the great beauty of this get-together. Horse and carriage rides |
Plaza de España Plaza del Triunfo, s/n Seville 41013 Spain |
The horse and carriage rides are a very popular attraction. There are several points around the city where you can find the traditional carriages, with their coachmen eager to take you for a ride. You will find them in Avenida de Roma, next to the Alfonso XIII hotel, in Plaza de Espana on Anibal Gonzalez roundabout, in Plaza del Triunfo and behind the Archivo de Indias. It is most expensive to take a ride during Feria de Abril. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mainly photography exhibitions |
Calle Hernando del Pulgar 11 Seville 41007 Spain |
The Sala Martín Iglesias exhibits a large number of works every 20 days or so. Among the most notable works are the photographs, including anything from images of museums to portraits. In their photographs, the artists show images of the numerous cities they have visited, as well as portraits showing, in black and white or in colour, people at their most beautiful, photographed naturally. Near the gallery, you can find two well-known shopping centres, the Nervión Plaza and the Corte Inglés. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Surrealist paintings |
Calle Luis Montoto 112 Seville 41005 Spain |
Imitating the work of Joan Miró, the artists who exhibit in this gallery will allow you to penetrate into a world of imagination. The works are displayed for approximately 40 days. Surrealism is the style most frequently exhibited here by young artists who re-work old paintings using the figurative elements and adding all kinds of anthropomorphical elements and objects - animal, vegetable, astral - that come out from the painting, all in very schematic Miró style. In all the compositions, you can see the painter's tendency to fill the whole canvas, and this factor together with the colour contrasts creates an impressive dynamic impression. Sculptures influenced by different styles |
Calle Chicarreros Seville 41004 Spain +34 95 459 7100 |
This gallery's sculpture exhibitions usually last about 45 days. The young artists who exhibit in this gallery, sponsored by Caja San Fernando, use iron as their main material, and show great skill in working with it. The sculptures are given very varied connotations, and the empty spaces left are a perfect complement to the rest of the work. They are sculptures full of creativity that manage to combine the language of the most absolute abstract art with naturalism. You can enjoy this form of static art, and let your imagination fly free. Sculpture and paintings |
Calle Albareda 17 Seville 41001 Spain +34 95 421 6708 |
Among the artwork exhibited here you can find watercolours and a large number of sculptures. The exhibitions change every month. Entering the terrain of cubism, the artists change the language of the painting by geometrizing the shapes. Stretching the perspectives emphasises the figures compared to the background. With regard to the sculptures, which are also influenced by cubism, you can observe a concept of space that does not follow traditions, in which the importance given to empty spaces is one of the predominant features, especially in the pieces that use metal. You can find impressive works of art displayed here together with very well defined and sensual volumes. Review © 2007, Wcities |
