The Renaissance style, quadrangular floor and large central patio are perhaps the most important characteristics of the Archivo General de Indias (General Archives of the Indies). In 1785 King Carlos III decided to transform the city's fish market into an archive for documents and testimonies from the New World, which up until then had been scattered throughout various territories. In this building, a meeting place for researchers, nearly 40,000 documents that deal with the first expeditions to the New World, from the moment of the 'discovery' to the 19th Century, are carefully filed, making the Archivo a cornerstone for research of this historical period. A visit here is a trip through the development of trade between Seville and the New World, especially with the 'Old and New World Commerce' exhibit. Located in the City Centre, in the popular Alameda de Hercules, there are several coffee shops and clubs which have very characteristic styles. They are the places where people going to write, read a book while drinking a coffee or to listen jazz; amongst these cafes stands out the Cafe Sonoro. It's a little hidden place that is small but a true gem of a coffee shop. Its outside terrace is usually very crowded when the weather is cooperating, and the inside has a sort of cosmopolitan feel to it with a soft lighting throughout. The club also offers popular music, at least for jazz lovers. There is also an impressive tea menu as well. One of the greatest traditions in Andalusia is to go to an open air cinema to enjoy the pleasant temperature of the summer nights. The commercial summer cinemas have practically all closed, so this activity now continues mainly thanks to public institutions. The University of Seville has done this for many years, dedicating its screens to classic films, on many occasions silent films. During May and June it runs a series of films based on different themes. The project, very successful amongst university students, has the collaboration of the Association of Writers and Filmmakers of Andalusia (ASECAN). The price of entrance is around 300 pesetas. Its stage has served as a launch pad for numerous groups from within and outside Andalusia. To get to the place you will have to go through a small patio that divides the theatre into two spaces. On one side is the auditorium and on the other the bar that serves as a meeting point. Near the theatre and in the same square of San Lorenzo can be found the basilica of Jesus del Gran Poder. Among the artwork exhibited here you can find watercolours and a large number of sculptures. The exhibitions change every month. Entering the terrain of cubism, the artists change the language of the painting by geometrizing the shapes. Stretching the perspectives emphasises the figures compared to the background. With regard to the sculptures, which are also influenced by cubism, you can observe a concept of space that does not follow traditions, in which the importance given to empty spaces is one of the predominant features, especially in the pieces that use metal. This is a small theatre which is known by many to have intersting productions and theatrical training courses throughout the year: script writing, theatrical direction and expression. Located close to the Plaza de los Terceros, it is also near to the squares of San Roman and San Marcos, famous for their 'pasos' (the religious statues that are carried in the Holy Week processions). Situated in the centre of Seville, very close to La Campana, this is an old cinema converted into a theatre after the decline of cinema at the end of the 70's. The playhouse maintains the flavour of old theatres, seats, decorations, and above all plays that it stages. The programming is dedicated for a large part of the year to musicals, 'zarzuelas' (traditional Spanish opera), operettas, and concerts by well-known and popular singers. One of the best things about this theatre is its location. Forming part of the heart of the city, from here you can easily get to Sierpes Street, Plaza Nueva, Plaza de San Francisco, the Ayuntamiento, or Iglesia del Salvador. The theatrical activity of the university is very successful, particularly amongst the students. Each faculty shows its works during the month in which the World Day of Theatre is celebrated; plays are shown on stages in various university campuses. They aim to show the works of young amateurs who each year stage shows of a very diverse nature, although mainly classical. Managed by the city's Ayuntamiento (Town Hall), this theatre was recovered after the Universal Exhibition Expo '92. It also houses the Centro Andaluz de Danza. Its programming is specially aimed at children from Seville with the Theatre and School season. Every year its programming also includes a sample of the work of the University theatre. It has disabled access and toilets and is situated next to Guadalquivir river and the Barqueta bridge, but what characterises it is its location in the Alameda de Hercules area, where the bohemian mixes with the avant-garde and the extravagant, and where there are plenty of bars, drinks and fun. One of Spain's big three opera houses along with the Liceo in Barcelona and Teatro de la Opera in Madrid. The larger of the two auditoriums hosts the work of prestigious directors. It's home to Seville's Royal Symphony Orchestra (www.rossevilla.com) who perform here most of the year. The whole building has been designed for easy disabled access. Not too many years ago it was one of the breeding grounds of the blues groups of the city. The decoration and atmosphere are its most attractive aspects, besides the varied music they play. The entire place reproduces a section of an 'underground' street, in comic and graffiti. Here, you can sit down on a city sidewalk, dance under a street lamp or smoke on a park bench.
