Aconcagua

Latin American lit, history, & anthro
Calle de Don Alfonso El Sabio
Seville 41004
Spain
Ángel, one of the owners, says it as clearly as possible: here there is a subtle love for books that almost goes unnoticed. Together with his twin brother Manolo, he has run this specialized bookstore, located at the end of Siete Revueltas (Seven Turns), in the Alfalfa neighborhood. Those who love Spanish and Portuguese language literature will not leave empty-handed, given that this bookstore specializes in any hard to find item from Latin America and in Peruvian and Argentinian editions. Here editions by Mistral, anthropology of the Andes, everything by Saramago, and the most current writings all come to rest, albeit momentarily.

Calle Sierpes

The city's most famous street
Calle Sierpes
Seville 41004
Spain
This is, without doubt, the best-known street and it runs between Plaza de San Francisco and La Campana (a shopping area). Although it's a short street, it's lined with all kinds of shops, bars and cafés, and has a constant stream of people all day long. It's a prime location, right in the center of the city and completely pedestrianized. Next to this street are Plaza del Salvador and Capilla de San José. There are also several tiled walls in this street, one of these being the façade of Seville's former prison where you can read that Miguel De Cervantes was imprisoned here, and it was while serving his sentence that he had the idea to write El Quijote, the most famous work of Spanish literature.

Climbing and rental
Calle De Salvador Távora
Seville 41006
Spain
+34 95 462 8402
In Seville, you can find diversity in outdoor climbing areas where you can practice your holds. For example, in Cantera de Moron de la Frontera, in Carmona (under the Parador), in Estepa, etc. But if what you're looking for isn't live rock, you do have urban alternatives: the first is the most economical and the oldest, the Triana Bridge. Here all the climbers from the Alpine Club of Seville (Club Alpino de Sevilla) meet up when the sun goes down. And the other alternative, more expensive but not by much, is the climbing wall at the San Pablo Sports Complex (Rocodromo del Polideportivo de San Pablo), where it is necessary to be a member. Every Th after 7:30p, the Alpine Club opens its doors to its members. Here you can sign up and enjoy the four different specialties: rock climbing, mountaineering, speleology (cave exploring), and scuba diving. Upon becoming a member of the club, you can obtain discounts on your purchases at many mountaineering shops in Seville; you can also rent equipment at a low price. Rental is weekly, that is, you can check it out on Thursday and you return it the following Th. One other advantage to being a member of this club is the possibility of using the climbing wall found in the San Pablo facilities. All members in mountaineering or speleology can use it free from M-F, two hours in the morning (11a-1p) and two in the evening (7p-9p).

Pequeños Suizos

Fine shoes
Calle Tetuán 19
Seville 41001
Spain
+34 95 422 0446
It is said that in this company from Madrid, Prince Felipe was bought his first pair of patent leather baby shoes. Founded in 1903 as 'Les petits Suisses,' it was in 1985 that it arrived in our city, in a store whose decoration preserves a few antique tiles of Triana by Mensaque Rodríguez. A historical place located in the commerical Tetuán Street, where the finest baby feet stop in for shoes. Good shoes by Spanish and Italian designers, and even an in-house line, made in Mallorca and Menorca.

Literature for everyone's pockets
Calle Almirante Apodaca 23-25
Seville 41003
Spain
+34 95 421 4084
This small bookstore is on the way for anyone going to or from downtown. In front of the Hemeroteca Municipal (Municipal Newspaper Library) and next to one of the most popular bars in the city, El Tremendo, it is difficult not to notice their window displays, especially the covers of the film or music books, while you're drinking your "suds". The prices aren't too different from the rest of the city's bookstores, and here you can find above all best sellers, recent publications, novels, and paperback books. The advantage to shopping here is that since it is a small store, the clerks are helpful and they will aid you in finding that book you've been looking for.

Located in the heart of the historical center of the city, in the cobbledstoned Mateos Gago, and a stone's throw away from the Cathedral, more than one tourist has been spotted peering through its windows without quite knowing what it was that was hiding behind its simple door. In addition to being a buy-and-sell bookstore, in this warehouse of knowledge you can find the publishing company that bears the same name. Second hand books, first editions, facsimiles, uncataloged books and much more. The owner brought thousands of editions from New York that he has been cataloging and arranging in this store for the delight of specialists and lovers of Letters. His archives are computerized, so it will be easy for you to find what you're looking for, although it actually is more pleasant to lose yourself among the shelves of old books and come across the first edition of Neruda's Odes or Alexandre's poems.

San Leandro Convent

Traditional cakes baked in a convent
Plaza de San Leandro

Spain

The yemas (one of the most typical sweets produced and eaten here in Seville) made at the San Leandro convent are famous. These and other cakes baked by the nuns can be bought during normal business hours inside the convent. It was built after the Reconquest of the city at the hands of Fernando III. Artistically-speaking, the main altarpiece is the most important part of the church. It was made at the height of the baroque period using the reliefs of a previous altarpiece by Jerónimo Hernández.

Santa Inés Convent

Baroque organ and home-made cakes
Calle Doña María Coronel
Seville 41003
Spain
+34 95 422 3145
This convent puts a large range of home-made cakes on sale during normal business hours. It is in the old part of the city, very near the Palacio de las Dueñas, Sor Ángela de la Cruz, Plaza de San Pedro and La Alfalfa. The convent contains the remains of its founder, Doña María Coronel, a Sevillian noblewoman courted by King Pedro I the Cruel. Legend tells of how Doña María poured boiling oil over her face and disfigured it to avoid the persistent amorous advances of the king, who even went as far as having her husband executed. One of the most notable features of this convent is its Baroque organ, which was the inspiration for Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer to write the legend of Maese Pérez the Organist.

Santa Paula Convent

Important carvings and paintings
Calle Santa Paula
Seville 41003
Spain
+34 95 442 1307
This convent was founded in 1475 and now it is inhabited by a community of Hieronymite nuns (a monastic order). There is a large museum inside the convent with several different rooms, one of which has a large cloister. It also contains works by those close to Murillo, and others attributed to Berruguete, as is the case with San Jerónimo. The convent also has two altarpieces, one by Alonso Cano with a central statue by Martínez Montañés. Like other convents in Seville, they give great importance to the typical gastronomy of the region, and you can buy their products during normal business hours, which is also when the museum opens.
