Popular venue for bands, comedians and concerts |
Barker's Pool Balm Green Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2JA United Kingdom +44 114 278 9789 (box office) |
This large-capacity stage hall is a popular venue for visiting comedians, singers, bands, plays and musicals. Although it faces stiff competition from other more modern Sheffield venues, the hall is conveniently based in the city center and still attracts some very big names. Classical music groups and visiting orchestras also perform regularly here. The seating is on two floors, facing a large stage. The surrounding decor is relatively old-fashioned, with some features dating back to the 1920s and the hall has an atmospheric feel, though it can be rather dark. A bar is available and serves during some performances. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Modern plays and touring productions |
55 Norfolk Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 1DA United Kingdom +44 114 249 6000 http://www.sheffieldtheatres.c... |
Though it may still be best known as the host of the annual Embassy World Snooker Championship, the Crucible is now also recognized as an important national theatre. Touring companies such as the National Theatre Company play either here or at the neighbouring Lyceum Theatre. The Crucible complex is Sheffield's answer to London's Barbican Centre and also houses the Crucible Studio, where more experimental work is shown. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Genuine Irish pub |
56 Trippet Lane Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4EL United Kingdom +44 114 249 0888 |
Despite the English name, the Dog and Partridge is a real Irish pub. Irish run and Irish patronized, you can forget your O'Neill's and Scruffy Murphy's - this is the genuine article! The Guinness is sublime. Tetleys and Magnet are on tap as well - but who's going to drink those in this environment? Live music is performed every night: the repertoire is mainly traditional Irish, but it changes, depending on who turns up and the landlord encourages diversity, so if you fancy giving your didgeridoo an airing, you'll be very welcome. Food is limited to chunky, home-made sandwiches and chips, and is served at lunchtimes only. Review © 2007, Wcities |

City centre museum: focuses on 19th and 20th century art |
Surrey St Leader House Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 1XZ United Kingdom +44 114 278 2600 http://www.sheffieldgalleries.... |
The Graves Gallery gives a focus to late 19th and 20th century European and 20th century British art. Its high-ceilinged rooms are sympathetically lit and its displays are informative and uncluttered. Paintings by some of art's biggest names are held here: Matisse, Gwen John, Stanley Spencer and Picasso are represented and a generous overview allows you to trace art history from 1850 onward. Important touring exhibitions are often on view, and specifically local themes are part of the remit. Especially impressive are the examples of chidren's art on display. A shop and an excellent cafe are also available. Admission: free Review © 2007, Wcities |

Intimate civic theatre |
Surrey Street The Library Theatre, c/o Central Library Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 1XZ United Kingdom +44 114 273 4102 |
Situated in Sheffield's Central Library, this small civic theatre with 260 seats has a proscenium stage and a raked auditorium. It is used mainly for amateur productions (lots of musicals and operetta) so it's a good place to see a varying programme of productions. The theatre is also available for hire to any interested group for only £64 per night. Facilities are good and include professional standard lighting and a projection box, but groups have to provide their own technical expertise. If you are going to see a production here, bear in mind that access is down two flights of stairs, and that although wheelchair access is possible, this has to be arranged in advance. Major civic theatre |
Tudor Square Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2LA United Kingdom +44 114 249 6000 http://www.sheffieldtheatres.c... |
This superbly restored large Victorian theatre, which seats audiences over three levels and retains original features (including boxes, wall paintings, sculptures and a decorated safety curtain) is the flagship of Sheffield's three civic theatres. Touring companies including the Royal National Theatre, the Opera North and the Northern Ballet visit regularly and musicals and popular favourites also play here. Generous discounts are offered on advance bookings to groups of 10 or more and a few standby tickets (limited to 2 per customer) are available each day for that night's show. A large bar area is open for drinks before performances and in the intervals. For information about disabled facilities, ask for an "Access to Sheffield theatres". The programme gives details of signed and audio-described performances for people with hearing or visual impairment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The impressive Millennium Galleries building is a light, bright, modern space - a showcase for the best in modern and traditional art, photography and sculpture. Main exhibitions change approximately every three months, thanks to a partnership with London's Tate Gallery. Long term exhibitions include an excellent "Metalwork" display, which illustrates the city's rich industrial history, and the city's comprehensive Ruskin Collection of Art, which has now been moved to the Galleries. Admission is free to most exhibitions; call for details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A relaxing venue for live music, good friends and a jug of beer |
The National Centre for Popular Music Paternoster Row Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2QQ United Kingdom +44 114 296 2626 |
Mojo's bar is located inside the National Centre for Popular Music - although the exhibition has now closed, the bar remains open. Themed around an American diner, with separate booths, large windows and additional unusual touches, this is a great venue for bands, DJs and comedy. When not playing host to a live act, the bar offers a modern and relaxing environment in which to enjoy food and drink. Its central location makes it an excellent meeting place, especially for movie goers, who tend to gather here before going to the Showroom cinema. If you are looking for a drink in a place that is a bit different from the regular city centre chains, Mojo's could be a good place to try. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Well-equipped small theatre |
S1 2LG Surrey Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2LG United Kingdom +44 114 272 0142 |
The Montgomery Theatre is a surprisingly well-equipped venue, which is rather bizarrely situated on the third floor of the Sheffield Christian Education Centre. It features a raked balcony and auditorium with 427 seats, and even a raked stage. A variety of performances can be seen here, but this is not a professional theatre, so almost all will be by amateur groups. Groups wishing to make bookings can book for around £340 a night - which includes the services of a professional electrician. Reaching the theatre involves a bit of a climb and there is no disabled access, so the less able-bodied should phone ahead. In view of the Christian philosophy of the Centre, only productions suitable for a family audience are shown here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Very modern cafe within Site Gallery |
1 Brown Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2BS United Kingdom +44 114 281 2077 |
The Site Cafe is situated inside the Site Gallery complex. The Gallery itself is cool and very modern, so it's no surprise to find that the cafe is decorated in the same style - there are lots of white walls, with a few minimalist exhibits to admire (these change on a regular basis). This is a great place to relax, and to be laid-back and sophisticated. There's good coffee by Lavazza and Mediterranean food is a speciality, so don't expect anything as common as a sandwich; we're talking focaccia, panini and ciabatta here. However, the quality is excellent - try ciabatta with bacon, mushrooms and mozzarella. Alcoholic drinks are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Intimate wine bar in simple surroundings |
89 Trippet Lane Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4EL United Kingdom +44 114 278 0198 |
Trippet's is one of those rare places that's so good you can't believe your luck when you find it! In a side street close to the city centre, this intimate wine bar provides excellent food and wine in a simple setting. There are two rooms, one of which is furnished with wide wooden tables and is used for eating and drinking, while the back room (which is more sparsely furnished) is mainly for music and dancing. The bar has a late license until 1 am and live music - mainly rhythm and blues - plays on Friday and Saturday nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Total relaxation by day, clubbers by night |
Carver St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4FS United Kingdom +44 114 241 3400 http://www.walkabout.eu.com/ |
With décor inspired by all things Australian and signs using language straight out of the worst Aussie soaps, Walkabout is a popular venue with students and young locals. Its city-centre location ensures that, on weekend evenings, its roomy dance floor is packed with pre-club revellers. During the week, the promotional drinks offers draw in students. Weekly events include karaoke, sports nights, live music and tribute band nights. By day, the scene is one of total relaxation with large comfy sofas to chill out on and TV screens to entertain. Walkabout is also one of the very few Sheffield city centre pubs to have a large beer garden. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Lively outlet of national chain |
25 Carver Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4GE United Kingdom +44 114 279 8099 |
This branch of the national wine bar attracts a relatively young crowd (most customers are aged between about 20 and 35), especially at weekends. The décor is modern and includes a spacious drinking area on different levels, with a separate dining area for those who prefer it. Acres of wooden floors and panelling create a rather exclusive feel, but the food is of the burgers and filled jackets variety. Nevertheless, it is very good value, with most dishes costing less than £6. The beers on draught include Stones and Caffreys and an extensive cocktail menu is also available (cocktails are about £3 each). Live bands play here about once a month and DJs appear at least once a week. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large student-orientated pub close to Hallam University |
69 Charles Street Sheffield S1 2NA United Kingdom +44 (0)114 275 6675 |
This bar, located close to Sheffield Hallam University, has a spacious bar and seating area. You will see small groups of thirsty students willing to consume large jugs of sickly-sweet cocktails or gallons of ale. Not surprisingly, this is a popular mid-week and weekend pre-club venue for younger drinkers and there is something going on here on most evenings, including a bar quiz, live music and themed party nights. There is also a pool table and a large beer garden, which has a gas heater. Food is served all day and the menu offers a wide selection of substantial meals at reasonable prices.
