In the last few years, partly because of the huge influx of students to the city, Sheffield's dining and drinking opportunities have grown beyond anyone's expectations, making it as good a place to spend an evening as almost any city in the country.

More than anything, the city has acquired more diversity and now has a genuinely cosmopolitan feel. The recent flood of cafe-bars that has swept Britain has not missed Sheffield out, but neither has it robbed the city of its array of traditional pubs. There are also new and exciting restaurants springing up all over the place, meaning that the eating place lurking around the next corner is as likely to be a Mediterranean tapas bar as a fish and chip shop.

Devonshire Quarter

By far the trendiest area in Sheffield, the Devonshire Quarter is close to the city centre and is the place to be seen in Sheffield, especially at the weekend. This is where the majority of the new cafe-bars are situated, most of which are quite relaxed during the day but come alive at night. Bar Coast (Division Street) is fairly typical, with sofas, bright colours and lots of stainless steel; there is also a full menu (prices are reasonable). Similarly, RSVP Bar and J.D.Wetherspoons (both Cambridge Street) provide freshly-prepared meals (around £5 for main courses) and attract mainly young professionals. The Forum Cafe (Division Street) has a real split personality: during the day it doubles up as an art gallery and is very sedate, but at night it has a genuine party atmosphere, with DJ's playing throughout the week. The Havana Internet Cafe is also worth a visit and last but not least, the Halcyon Bar (Devonshire Street) is possibly the coolest place to be seen in Sheffield, with minimalist decor, a late licence (until 1 am) and the added lure of Absinthe.

If these bars seem a bit too trendy, however, there's always The Yorick (Division Street), a traditional pub which nevertheless gets very busy at weekends. Or, if you're looking for somewhere a bit different, you could do worse than The Walkabout Inn (Carver Street) which is an Australian-themed pub and includes a dance floor, a beer garden, karaoke and live music. Those with strong stomachs, however, should head straight for the Frog and Parrot (Division Street) which allegedly has the strongest beer in the world, aptly called "Roger and Out". The Devonshire Quarter also houses a number of popular restaurants. BB's Italian Restaurant (Devonshire Street) offers good service and the opportunity to take your own wine, whereas Pizza Express (Devonshire Street) continues the area's stainless steel theme (this is Sheffield, after all!) and offers a good selection of freshly-baked pizzas, while Ask Pizza and Pasta (Cambridge Street) is sophisticated and spacious. Less conventional restaurants include The Mad Greek (Fitzwilliam Street), which is huge and includes plate-smashing, dancing and singing, and Bistro Casablanca (Devonshire Street), which has a Continental atmosphere and a live jazz band.

West Street

Close to the Devonshire Quarter is West Street, which begins as Glossop Road and leads directly to the city centre. West Street is not quite as 21st century as the Devonshire Quarter, but it does have a very good selection of restaurants and bars and is well worth a visit. The most noticeable bar is indisputably The Cavendish (partly because it is bright yellow). The emphasis here is clearly on fun and quiz nights, comedy and karaoke are all regular features. Closer to town is Sheffield's most kitsch establishment, Flares 70s Revival Bar, which serves lunches by day and dons an afro wig by night and has an atmosphere that makes it seem more like a club. Other places worth stopping off at for a drink include the very large Edwards Bar, the very busy Foundry and Firkin and Scruffy Murphy's. West Street also has a number of popular and interesting restaurants to choose from. Two easily-confused restaurants are Que Tal? and K Pasa (both Glossop Road) as they are practically next door to one another. K Pasa is a Mexican restaurant which is very lively and suitable for large parties, whereas Que Tal? offers a wide selection of Mexican, Italian and Spanish dishes.

Ecclesall Road

Another street which seems to be entirely made up of restaurants and bars is Ecclesall Road. If you like Italian food, this is definitely the place to go as you will simply be spoilt for choice here. Santino's Ristorante Italiano is particularly recommended (not least because you can take your own wine and they even provide you with reading glasses if you've forgotten yours!) but Caffe Uno, The Pomona and Trattoria Romana also serve delicious food at reasonable prices. However, Ecclesall Road has not been completely colonized by Italy; Café Rouge is a French restaurant which is thoroughly deserving of its popularity, whereas Nonnas Cafe and Restaurant, though Italian-based, is a European-style cafe-bar which serves lovely food from the whole continent and even has a deli counter so you can buy the ingredients afterwards.

Champs Sports Bar and Restaurant is perhaps Ecclesall Road's most popular venue. Split into two sections, one side is a relaxed American restaurant while the other is a thriving bar which specializes in cocktails and is decorated with sports memorabilia. Other bars worth trying include The Slug and Fiddle, which is spacious and often has live bands and DJs playing, and The Nursery Tavern, a busy pub with a beer garden and a good reputation for food.

Recommended Establishments

Although these three areas are the busiest places in Sheffield and have the most bars and restaurants per square mile, there is far more to the city than this. For example, more upmarket restaurants include Thyme (Sandygate Road), an interesting and original English restaurant, and the Mediterranean Restaurant (Sharrow Vale Road), which specializes in seafood and tapas. Other bars worth checking out include All Bar One (Leopold Street), which attracts a lively crowd of young professionals, and Empire Bar (Charter Square), with its distinctive movie-themed atmosphere. Finally, the area of Broomhill is worthy of a mention. There are a number of busy and friendly pubs here, such as The Fox and Duck and O'Neills' Irish Bar (both Fulwood Road), a recently-refurbished cafe-bar (Hanrahans, Glossop Road) and one or two interesting places to eat out such as UK Mama.

ASK Pizza and Pasta

Sophisticated Italian restaurant

http://www.askcentral.co.uk/
ASK Pasta and Pizza serves exactly what the name suggests, but in a rather superior way. This modern city centre restaurant is cool in the extreme, incorporating white walls, pale floors, and black wooden chairs, all of which provide sophisticated and spacious surroundings for a pleasant and relaxing meal. In this restaurant, you're made to feel comfortable whether you're with friends or on your own. Not surprisingly, there's lots of fresh pasta and pizza, but there are also options such as bruschetta with marinated tomatoes, red onions and basil - this is very good value given the quality of both food and surroundings.

BB's Italian Restaurant

Small Italian restaurant
119 Devonshire Street
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 7SB
United Kingdom
+44 114 279 9394
This cosy, city centre-based Italian restaurant, which is decorated in the style of a traditional Italian bistro, with small tables, brightly coloured tablecloths and subdued lighting, offers a wide range of pizza, pasta and lasagne dishes (and more). Main meals cost around £9. The delicious ravioli dishes are particularly popular and the various lasagne meals are also recommended. This is an ideal place to come for a celebration or to start a night out and service is excellent. Customers can bring their own wine - but book in plenty of time, as BB's is extremely popular, especially at weekends.

Bar Coast

Fashionable but friendly
The Old Fire Station, Division St
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4GF
United Kingdom
+44 114 279 2900
One of Sheffield's most popular bars, this converted fire station is where the city's trendsetters hang out. Exposed brick walls, high ceilings, a lot of stainless steel, very bright colours and a number of sofas all add to the very fashionable effect. However, both atmosphere and service are friendly and relaxed and the music is not obtrusive. The bar is always busy at night, especially on weekends. A full menu offers snacks, finger food, wraps and sandwiches.

Originally Mr Kite's wine bar, this small restaurant has been popular in Sheffield for years. Attracting customers of all ages, especially families and couples, it has a friendly, Continental feel; tables spill out onto the pavement in warm weather and movie posters, old-fashioned signs and mirrors decorate the walls. The atmosphere is also very relaxed and service is leisurely. The restaurant is always busy, especially at night, when live bands sometimes play. The reasonably-priced menu includes options such as peppered chicken, swordfish steak, cheese and broccoli bake and a good range of pizzas.

Caffé Uno is part of a national chain with a deserved reputation for providing good quality food at reasonable prices. This outlet, near Hunter's Bar, provides customers with well presented, high quality Italian food such as spaghetti carbonara or pollo al rosmario (chicken with rosemary). This is a bright, modern restaurant with plenty of space and a mixed clientele. It is an excellent place to meet friends or business colleagues in the certainty that you are not going to be disappointed. It is equally good for coffee and snacks. Staff is cheerful and obliging and the restaurant is very child friendly; in fact, the attitude towards families is quite Italian. A small bar area is available for pre-dinner drinks.

Cavendish

Large, fashionable and sporty
220-238 West Street
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4EU
United Kingdom
+44 114 252 5781
This large, fashionable pub is always busy. It is spacious and friendly but while its atmosphere is relaxed by day, it is often crowded at night, when comedy and quiz nights are scheduled. Solid wood furniture and unusual lampshades (which are made from oil-drums) add to the charm. The Cavendish attracts business people by day and a younger, student-based crowd at night. It has a games area, including three pool tables, as well as several TV screens, and is always exceptionally busy during sports events. A large beer garden is popular in warm weather. Standard bar food is also available (options include the hot n'spicy chicken burger with chips and vegetarian lasagne). Servings are generous.

Champs, a fashionable bar and restaurant in the busiest part of Ecclesall Road, is a great place to meet before a heavy night's clubbing. The bar is decorated with sports memorabilia (such as Ayrton Senna's racing helmet and a signed photo of Frank Bruno) and is definitely a place to see and be seen. The extensive food menu is the same in both the bar and restaurant. Many of the dishes have a sporting theme: try the Gerhard Burger, for instance. The menu may range too widely for absolute authenticity, but the food is good and is well presented. A quick glance at the menu shows Italian, Chinese, New England, Mexican, Texas, Cajun, Thai and Malaysian influences.

Sheffield
United Kingdom
The tree-lined section of Ecclesall Road, running from just past the old Ward's brewery to Hunter's Bar roundabout, is known as Sheffield's "golden mile" of shopping for its mix of designer and speciality shops. There is also a good selection of bars, cafes and pubs, including Coffee Revolution, Nonnas Cafe and Restaurant, Champs Bar and Restaurant and the Porter Brook Pub.

Nearby Sharrow Vale Road has a similar mixture, including Caf Ceres, the Mediterranean Restaurant and the Lescar Pub.

This is also the location of two of Sheffield's best-known green spaces; Endcliffe Park and the Botanical Gardens.

Empire Bar

Movie theme bar
25-33 Charter Square
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4HS
United Kingdom
+44 114 275 2020
Although this city centre bar is not attractive from the outside, it is extremely popular with huge spotlights, speakers, raised wooden floors, mosaics and velvet couches which give it a distinctly stagey feel. The theme is 50s movies and both equipment and posters are on display, although when the large TV screens are on, they usually show live football matches rather than films. The menu offers a wide range of dishes: "Light Bites" (such as spicy Thai crab cakes or stuffed wheat tortillas) are available. Salads and sandwiches. An extensive cocktail menu is also available. Customers tend to be relatively young and the bar can get very busy, especially on weekends, but it is so large that there is very little risk of feeling claustrophobic.

Every night is party night

Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4EU
United Kingdom
+44 114 253 6510
Flares is a 70's revival bar popular with the Sheffield student population and weekend pre-club crowd. From inside and out, Flares oozes all the kitsch value you would expect from a 70's shrine. Every weekend, it attracts hundreds of revellers. The regular clientele dress not only to impress but also to regress back to an era where everything was fab and groovy. But don't worry if you threw away your flares long ago: 70's fancy dress is optional. Disco nights are not all Flares has to offer; during the day, the bar is much quieter and comfortable sofas make this a relaxing place to eat and drink. Food and special offer drinks are available daily from midday until 3p.

Foundry and Firkin

Interesting home-brewed beers
240 West Street
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4EU
United Kingdom
+44 114 275 7805
This extremely large pub is located very close to the city centre and is consequently often busy. If you have been to a Firkin pub before, you'll know what to expect: Firkin jokes and colourful noticeboards litter the place, and the food is very good value. However, although the pub isn't one of the most individual pubs in Sheffield, it does stand out for being one of the largest: even at busy times, you are likely to find a seat here. The range of home-brewed beers are interesting, although they aren't to everyone's taste. A large beer garden is popular during the summer. The pub is mainly used by students during term time, but tends to be quieter in holiday periods, when twenty- and thirty-something locals come here more often. Bear in mind that background music is almost always loud: this isn't the place to come for a quiet evening drink.

Something for everyone
227 Fulwood Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 3BA
United Kingdom
+44 114 266 3422
With a healthy mix of students and non-students, this university-owned pub has recently been refurbished and now boasts an attractive heated outdoor seating area. A wide selection of draught bitters and lagers is available to choose from (or work your way through) and drinks are particularly cheap during the week. The pub is popular with a crowd of students and young locals, and this ethos is prevalent: customers are allowed to bring their own food and will even be provided with plates and cutlery if they do. The music can be loud, but this is an attractive, well-furnished pub with a lively, friendly atmosphere: if you're under thirty, or even just young at heart, you'll love it.

94 Division St
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4GF

This small, friendly pub is renowned throughout Sheffield for its home-brewed beer and cocktail jugs. It has a traditional feel and attracts a good number of young professionals and students. Service is cheerful and welcoming and the pub is worth a visit for its innovative drinks menu alone. The "Roger and Out" beer (reputed, at 12.9 % to be the strongest beer worldwide) is a challenge to even the most hardened of drinkers. The beer doesn't taste as strong as it is, so caution is advised. It is served only by the third of a pint, and customers aren't allowed more than three glasses. Certificates are issued to those who manage this much! A full bar menu is available all day.

The Halcyon, which attracts a young, style-conscious crowd, is distinctly minimalist in style. Spindly wrought iron chairs and small tables are provided in the main seating area and a second large bay has standing room only. This is still one of the relatively few bars in Sheffield to have a late license (to 1a). Food is served from 6p until midnight and is in keeping with the minimalist style (options include vegetable dim sum with plum sauce and skewered tempura prawns).

This branch of the national chain, situated close to Sheffield University and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, is an attractive conversion of a Victorian villa. The large bar and separate restaurant area are stylishly decorated, and there is an emphasis on stainless steel and wood. The bar is famous throughout Sheffield for its cocktail menu and is popular with young professionals. An extensive menu of generally fresh food is available: starters begin at around £3.75 and standard main courses range from about £8 to £10. Luxuries such as grilled sea bream with garlic and capsicum are available from the specials board. A large car park is provided for the use of customers.

This cafe's brightly-coloured Cuban themed décor makes it easy to spot. Inside, the atmosphere is laid back and the menu is extensive, with a wide range of "world cuisine" on the menu. There are daily specials and a good selection of vegetarian food is always included. The standard of food is usually good although it is not exceptional. Various coffees, teas and soft drinks are also available and you can include surfing time on your bill: internet connection costs about £1.30 for fifteen minutes, although you can also buy "bundles" of net time, which works out more cheaply. Alternatively, just have a coffee or a juice and read the newspaper. The cafe is popular with students and and fills up with young professionals at lunchtimes. Takeaways are also available.

K Pasa

Loud, lively Italian restaurant
290 Glossop Rd
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2HS
United Kingdom
+44 114 272 8260
This large restaurant, which is Italian with Spanish and Mexican connections, is usually very busy, with plenty of atmosphere. The décor and lighting are bright and have traditional Italian bistro overtones; each table has candles and a decorative plastic tablecloth. Conversation tends to be quite loud and the background music is turned up to compete. The food isn't outstanding but it is perfectly reasonable and includes the usual range of pastas and pizzas at £5-£10, as well as some more unusual options, such as sardines in tomato sauce and Mexican fajitas. Eat here if you're with a crowd or if you've already had a few drinks on West Street - the restaurant is close to town and is open until midnight. Large groups are welcome - but don't expect a peaceful evening.

Mediterranean Restaurant

Bistro-style restaurant specializing in seafood
271 Sharrow Vale Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8ZF
United Kingdom
+44 114 266 1069
The Mediterranean is one of perhaps half a dozen Sheffield restaurants which have deservedly earned a regional, not just a local, reputation. It specializes in interesting fish dishes, although alternatives (including vegetarian options) are available. Although the theme is Mediterranean, the emphasis is on Spain and, if you don't want the full monty, this is one of the few places in South Yorkshire where you can find genuine tapas. The restaurant is intimate with subdued lighting, candles and a distinctly Spanish feel. Music plays softly throughout the evening. It is popular with couples and with locals of all ages, who often eat here in small groups. A typical meal might include a pan-fried quail salad starter followed by an unusual and delicious dish called zarazuella - a sort of Spanish fish stew. Most of the waiters are Spanish and service is attentive but also laid back: you will not feel rushed. This is a great place to relax and think about that next holiday in the sun!

A coffee bar, restaurant and deli are shoehorned into what used to be a butcher's shop: this means the restaurant is small and booking is essential, but it is well worth the effort. Real Italian food and the freshest ingredients are cooked to perfection. In all, Nonna's is a little gem—almost too good to share!

It can be quiet in the afternoons, but come evening, numbers and volume rise relentlessly. Do yell into your mobile phone, do greet your friends by screaming at them from the far side of the bar. If you're extrovert or young at heart, you'll love it. Beer is Stones, Worthington and Caffreys plus premium lagers. Food is served 12 noon to 7p and is excellent value, though the choice is not wide. Snacks (cheeseburger, filled jackets, etc) are all available from about £1.50. +44 114 275 2755
Stainless steel, light polished wood and white walls with blocks of vibrant colour all help to make this large, modern restaurant feel both stylish and relaxed. Tables are discreetly arranged and customers often seem to be discussing business or on a date, although the restaurant is popular with families in the early evenings. Good provision is also made for groups, which tend to be seated on the upper floor where possible. The wide range of freshly-baked Italian style pizzas (priced from about £6)includes pizza veneziana, with raisins and pine kernels, pizza alle nocci with gorgonzola, spinach and walnuts and the pizza fiorentina, a vegetarian alternative which includes spinach and a free range egg. A few pasta dishes are also available and the excellent sweet menu includes chocolate fudge cake and luxury ice-cream bombes. Live jazz is played on the upper floor approximately once a month (see the website for details). Booking is not usually available and this can mean that the bar area is crowded and that service sometimes feels rushed, but the impressive quality of the food invariably compensates for this.

The clientele is mixed, but mainly comprises younger people (the age range is from about 18 to 30) and students, especially in the evenings. Draught beers include John Smith's, Theakston's, Guinness and a range of reasonably priced snacks and main courses are also available. The menu includes snacks such as filled Yorkshire puddings, or main meals (options include beef and ale pie and lasagne). This is a lively pub that can be crowded. A pool table and games machines are provided for the use of customers and a DJ plays on Wednesday and Saturday nights. The volume of music and TVs in this pub is usually loud. The atmosphere is welcoming - but don't expect a quiet night out!

This is a spacious, modern bar with parquet floors, an upstairs balcony and comfortable armchairs. It is decorated in bold, simple colours and attracts a young, mostly professional crowd. Food, which is served from 11a until 9:30p, is freshly prepared and comes in large portions. The extensive menu includes snacks such as tomato, cheese and olive bruschetta, Thai chicken nachos and other delicious platters to share. Main courses, soup noodles and pastas are also available. RSVP stocks a good selection of bottled beers and cocktail jugs as well as Boddingtons and other draught beers. The bar can be hired for afternoon or evening celebrations and staff even go so far as to organize parties on request.

Richard Smith at Thyme

High quality modern bistro

This restaurant is very much a star attraction in Sheffield and should appeal to anyone who enjoys excellent food but is unsure what to eat. Although these two restaurants are owned and operated by Richard Smith, the adjacency does provide patrons to the building a feeling of variety. Artisan, the contemporary bistro, presents a casual stylish stmosphere serving up all the dishes you would expect from a café including Bangers and Mash, Beef Fillets, or Shepards Pie. Upstairs, patrons are greeted to a quaint, informal seafood restaurant with an array of fresh dishes from Chesapeake seafood chowder to a Spaghetti of langoustines. Both restaurants are open seven days a week.

Santino's Ristorante Italiano

Very popular Italian restaurant
371-373 Ecclesall Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8PF
United Kingdom
+44 114 267 0078
Santino's is so good it has expanded to take over the shop next door - and it still fills up quickly! This is definitely one restaurant where booking is advisable, particularly for mid-evening and weekend meals. White walls and murals create an almost Roman feel. The restaurant is owned and run by Italians and this shows in the menu, which runs far beyond pasta and pizza. You could start with a selection of cured meats served with marinated peppers (antipasto con pepperocino) and, for the main course, try vitello valdostana (scallops of veal cooked with mushrooms and white wine). Service is attentive but the atmosphere is laid back: this is a place to relax and enjoy your evening.

Scruffy Murphy's

Irish themed bar
149-151 West Street
Sheffield S1 4EW
United Kingdom
+44 (0)114 276 2613 / +44 (0)114 276 5795
This is a traditional Irish bar in an urban setting. It's not very convincing but it is nevertheless a pleasant place to drink. There are acres of bare wooden floorboards with wooden furniture to match. Some cozy alcoves along two sides of the room and a selection of daily newspapers are available. Like any other pub in West Street, Scruffy Murphy's is usually packed with students during term time but at other times the atmosphere is much more relaxed.

Slug & Fiddle

Busy modern bar near universities
261-267 Ecclesall Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8JD
United Kingdom
+44 114 268 2216
This bar/pub has a large open-plan drinking area with more standing space than tables. When it is quiet, it is a comfortable, spacious place to eat, but its character changes during the day; it attracts business people at lunchtimes and students and clubbers in the evenings, especially at weekends. Draught beer includes Banks and entertainment is provided most evenings - big-screen football is on Wednesdays and a DJ is scheduled for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. This bar has a strong character, but be warned: in the evenings it is loud! Options include burgers and tagliatelle carbonara and are priced from about £4. Look out for the teatime specials: these are especially good value.

UK Mama

Unique, Afro-Caribbean restaurant
257 Fulwood Road
Sheffield S10 3BD
United Kingdom

http://www.ukmama.co.uk/
UK Mama was the first African/Caribbean restaurant in Sheffield and it still maintains an excellent reputation for providing the genuine article when it comes to food. Start with opirima (fried plantains) and follow that with beef and okra, or gungo pea stew with minced meat. The restaurant is quite small and booking is recommended. The décor is typically Afro-Caribbean, with bright murals and photos of black icons including Lennox Lewis and Prince Naseem Hamed. Note that service can be a bit slow at the busiest times and that wheelchair access may be difficult due to limited space. All dishes are also available as a takeaway option, and there is free delivery within a three mile radius.

Walkabout Inn

Total relaxation by day, clubbers by night
Carver St
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4FS
United Kingdom
+44 114 241 3400

With décor inspired by all things Australian and signs using language straight out of the worst Aussie soaps, Walkabout is a popular venue with students and young locals. Its city-centre location ensures that, on weekend evenings, its roomy dance floor is packed with pre-club revellers. During the week, the promotional drinks offers draw in students. Weekly events include karaoke, sports nights, live music and tribute band nights. By day, the scene is one of total relaxation with large comfy sofas to chill out on and TV screens to entertain. Walkabout is also one of the very few Sheffield city centre pubs to have a large beer garden.

Yorick

Traditional pub in very trendy area
73-75 Division St
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4GE
United Kingdom
+44 114 279 9339
This traditional pub, which retains wooden panelling and furniture, is situated in the very popular Devonshire Quarter. Surrounded by modern bars and cafes, the Yorick continues to offer a traditional welcome and environment. Clientele is varied, so at most times it's a good spot for a quiet chat. However, this is an area where a lot of clubbers meet, so expect it to be a lot busier at weekends. Beer is Boddingtons and Magnet and a range of cocktails is also available. There is a quiz on Wednesdays and a disco on Friday and Saturday nights. Otherwise, there are few concessions to modern trends - no food is offered and credit cards are not accepted.
