Bistro Casablanca

Well-established Continental style bistro
150-154 Devonshire St
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 7SG
United Kingdom
+44 114 249 0720
Originally Mr Kite's wine bar, this small restaurant has been popular in Sheffield for years. Attracting customers of all ages, especially families and couples, it has a friendly, Continental feel; tables spill out onto the pavement in warm weather and movie posters, old-fashioned signs and mirrors decorate the walls. The atmosphere is also very relaxed and service is leisurely. The restaurant is always busy, especially at night, when live bands sometimes play. The reasonably-priced menu includes options such as peppered chicken, swordfish steak, cheese and broccoli bake and a good range of pizzas.

Brasserie Leo

Upmarket bar brasserie
Charnwood Hotel
10 Sharrow Lane
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8AA
United Kingdom
+44 114 258 9411
Brasserie Leo is part of the Charnwood Hotel, but has its own entrance on London Road. The restaurant is based on two levels and its décor is stylish, incorporating a good deal of dark wood and mosaics as well as brass and large mirrors. It is very well-lit and this, in conjunction with white linen and a good number of windows, creates an airy, welcoming feel. Tables are widely spaced, so privacy is available for discreet business discussions, but though the atmosphere is relatively formal, the clientele usually includes a good number of locals as well as hotel guests. The menu is intelligent and innovative - for instance, a warm salad of peppered venison might be followed by a main course of sautéed king scallops. Also look out for the specials board, which offers some interesting alternatives to the main menu. Prices begin at about £4.50 for a starter and range from about £10 to £15 for a main course. The food isn't cheap but all the ingredients are fresh and the quality is extremely good. In addition to its advertised opening hours, Brasserie Leo will open at lunchtime on request.

Cool, calm and collected, Sheffield's airy Café Rouge offers an ideal respite from the hustle and bustle of Ecclesall Road. Whether you want a three course meal or just a glass of wine, this attractive venue has what you need. Both food and service are impeccable and the prices are reasonable. The two course menu, which is available during the week from noon until 4p, offers particularly good value. The clientèle varies from business people to well-off students and the atmosphere is always laid-back.

Delhi Junction Anglo-Indian Brasserie

Very popular, with real atmosphere
Abbeydale Road South
The Old Station
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S17 3LB
United Kingdom
+44 114 262 0675
http://delhijunction.co.uk/
The décor is smart but distinctive: there is a lot of black lacquer and gold leaf and the waiters always wear dinner jackets. The Maitre d' is a real character, who welcomes diners personally and will gladly recommend a selection of dishes for you. The restaurant is situated in the old Dore railway station and trains can still be heard rattling past on the line outside, although most customers feel that this adds atmosphere and does not detract from the surroundings or from the experience of enjoying the excellent food.

Fable's Coffee Shop and Bistro

Modern coffee shop and Bistro with varied menu
9-13 Ashgate House, Ashgate Road
Broomhill
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 3BZ
United Kingdom
+44 114 268 4977
http://www.fable.org.uk/
Located alongside the S10 Gallery, and also owned by the F.A.B.L.E. Charity which helps epilepsy sufferers, the Fables Coffee shop isn't what you'd think of as a charity coffee shop. In fact, it is much more like a trendy city centre cafe-bar, where even Victoria Beckham wouldn't look out of place! The décor is modern but comfortable and the space is flooded in light. The Coffee Shop/Bistro offers a varied choice or great food in a relaxed, friendly environment. There isn't a bar so it's bring your own bottle, though there is a corkage fee.

Mediterranean Restaurant

Bistro-style restaurant specializing in seafood
271 Sharrow Vale Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8ZF
United Kingdom
+44 114 266 1069
The Mediterranean is one of perhaps half a dozen Sheffield restaurants which have deservedly earned a regional, not just a local, reputation. It specializes in interesting fish dishes, although alternatives (including vegetarian options) are available. Although the theme is Mediterranean, the emphasis is on Spain and, if you don't want the full monty, this is one of the few places in South Yorkshire where you can find genuine tapas. The restaurant is intimate with subdued lighting, candles and a distinctly Spanish feel. Music plays softly throughout the evening. It is popular with couples and with locals of all ages, who often eat here in small groups. A typical meal might include a pan-fried quail salad starter followed by an unusual and delicious dish called zarazuella - a sort of Spanish fish stew. Most of the waiters are Spanish and service is attentive but also laid back: you will not feel rushed. This is a great place to relax and think about that next holiday in the sun!

United Kingdom
+44 114 266 1788

Milano Restaurant

Classy and cutting-edge
Park Lodge
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S8 0LA
United Kingdom
+44 114 235 3080
Seemingly based on a fashionable London brasserie, you might forget that you're still in Sheffield once you step inside this classy, internationally-flavored restaurant, which feels spacious and is decorated in a modern, understated way, in subdued colors, with a good deal of space around tables. There is a set menu as well as an à la carte menu, which consists of seven starters and eight main courses. Dishes are adventurous, steering well clear of the norm, and include several vegetarian options: the quality is generally excellent. The extensive wine list includes many reasonably-priced bottles as well as some more special options. This is a great place to spend an evening and is secluded enough to work well for a date, but is also formal enough to make it a good business choice. Service is attentive but not insistent and you will never feel rushed here.

Morilles

Friendly and good value
238 Abbeydale Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S7 1FL
United Kingdom
+44 114 250 8436
Morilles is a simply furnished but cosy little bistro, which is decorated in bright colours and has a bring your own wine policy which helps to keep prices down. In keeping with the general ambience, the menu lacks pretension but it does feature fresh ingredients, vivid flavours and good presentation. Try mussels with a piquant garlic and tomato sauce from about. For a main course you can't beat the beef stroganoff. The atmosphere is intimate and this is a great place for a romantic evening out. Street parking is available outside.

Nonna's

Superb Italian restaurant and deli
539-541 Ecclesall Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8PR
United Kingdom
+44 114 268 6166
http://www.nonnas.co.uk/conten...
Open the door of Nonna's and you could almost be in northern Italy: real Italian coffee, pasta, wine, olives, prosciutto, and even Italian newspapers are all available. A coffee bar, restaurant and deli are shoehorned into what used to be a butcher's shop: this means the restaurant is small and booking is essential, but it is well worth the effort. Real Italian food and the freshest ingredients are cooked to perfection. In all, Nonna's is a little gem—almost too good to share!

Pavarotti's Italian Restaurant

Spacious with excellent food
186 London Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 6PG
United Kingdom
+44 114 255 1722
Eating Italian food in the heart of Sheffield might appear a little surreal but there are plenty of authentic Italian-owned restaurants about, and Pavarotti's is no exception; the quality of Italian cuisine here will make you feel as though you're sitting in the centre of Rome. The size of this cafe/restaurant is deceptive from the outside; the interior has two floors and is spacious. The main feature on the first floor is the semi-circular bar area, which allows diners to see the open-plan kitchen area, so they can watch food being freshly prepared. The menu offers everything you would expect of an Italian eatery and the rich aroma adds to this expectation from the moment you enter. Prices are very good and the portion sizes would not shame any Italian Mama.

Richard Smith at Thyme

High quality modern bistro
32-34 Sandygate Rd
Crosspool
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 4 DQ
United Kingdom
+44 114 266 6096
http://www.thymeforfood.co.uk/...
This restaurant is very much a star attraction in Sheffield and should appeal to anyone who enjoys excellent food but is unsure what to eat. Although these two restaurants are owned and operated by Richard Smith, the adjacency does provide patrons to the building a feeling of variety. Artisan, the contemporary bistro, presents a casual stylish stmosphere serving up all the dishes you would expect from a café including Bangers and Mash, Beef Fillets, or Shepards Pie. Upstairs, patrons are greeted to a quaint, informal seafood restaurant with an array of fresh dishes from Chesapeake seafood chowder to a Spaghetti of langoustines. Both restaurants are open seven days a week.
