Fashionable but friendly |
The Old Fire Station, Division St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4GF United Kingdom +44 114 279 2900 |
One of Sheffield's most popular bars, this converted fire station is where the city's trendsetters hang out. Exposed brick walls, high ceilings, a lot of stainless steel, very bright colours and a number of sofas all add to the very fashionable effect. However, both atmosphere and service are friendly and relaxed and the music is not obtrusive. The bar is always busy at night, especially on weekends. A full menu offers snacks, finger food, wraps and sandwiches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Colourful, welcoming vegetarian and vegan cafe |
2 St. James Street, Cathedral Square Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2EW United Kingdom +44 114 276 3443 |
This is a colourful and sociable place to eat. There's no need to take a magazine - the notice board has bright and plentiful reading on events and organizations around Sheffield. The menu mixes cuisine from Mexico to the Mediterranean to provide tasty and filling lunches at reasonable prices. Tea and coffee are also a delight (a range of both is available) and service is friendly and accommodating. This is a lovely place to eat and drink, with an excellent range of options for vegetarians and vegans. In warm weather, outside seating is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Upmarket bar brasserie |
Charnwood Hotel 10 Sharrow Lane Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8AA United Kingdom +44 114 258 9411 |
Brasserie Leo is part of the Charnwood Hotel, but has its own entrance on London Road. The restaurant is based on two levels and its décor is stylish, incorporating a good deal of dark wood and mosaics as well as brass and large mirrors. It is very well-lit and this, in conjunction with white linen and a good number of windows, creates an airy, welcoming feel. Tables are widely spaced, so privacy is available for discreet business discussions, but though the atmosphere is relatively formal, the clientele usually includes a good number of locals as well as hotel guests. The menu is intelligent and innovative - for instance, a warm salad of peppered venison might be followed by a main course of sautéed king scallops. Also look out for the specials board, which offers some interesting alternatives to the main menu. Prices begin at about £4.50 for a starter and range from about £10 to £15 for a main course. The food isn't cheap but all the ingredients are fresh and the quality is extremely good. In addition to its advertised opening hours, Brasserie Leo will open at lunchtime on request. Delicious and unusual sandwiches |
7 The Wicker Arches Walker Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 8GZ United Kingdom +44 114 249 5555 |
Queues form every lunchtime in the shop under the railway arches at the end of the Wicker for a choice of sandwiches from bacon and brie to poached fresh salmon, from cajun chicken and lime dressing to strawberry jam. Look out for the "special" sandwich of the week, which will be advertised inside the shop. A good range of vegetarian options (such as soft cheese, apricots and walnuts) are available. Tea, coffee and soft drinks are all sold, and you can eat in at the attractive loft-style cafe upstairs, which is extremely comfortable with wooden furniture and some easy chairs. Modern coffee shop and Bistro with varied menu |
9-13 Ashgate House, Ashgate Road Broomhill Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 3BZ United Kingdom +44 114 268 4977 http://www.fable.org.uk/ |
Located alongside the S10 Gallery, and also owned by the F.A.B.L.E. Charity which helps epilepsy sufferers, the Fables Coffee shop isn't what you'd think of as a charity coffee shop. In fact, it is much more like a trendy city centre cafe-bar, where even Victoria Beckham wouldn't look out of place! The décor is modern but comfortable and the space is flooded in light. The Coffee Shop/Bistro offers a varied choice or great food in a relaxed, friendly environment. There isn't a bar so it's bring your own bottle, though there is a corkage fee. Housed in the popular Forum Centre, this cafe attracts business people for breakfast and lunch and a louder 20-30 yrs of age crowd at night, when jazz, cocktail and house music events are organized. Sophisticated cafe-bar and Sheffield institution |
28 Cambridge St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4HP United Kingdom +44 114 275 2342 |
Although it is now a national chain, Henry's is a bit of a Sheffield institution. It opened in 1982 as one of the first "Henry's" in the country (and probably the first cafe-bar in Sheffield) and is still going strong. It occupies a corner site right in the city centre and is popular with both shoppers and business-people alike. Food is served all day: expect excellent coffee and tempting cakes, as well as a range of bottled beers and wines, or choose from the full menu (prices range from about £5), which includes a substantial all-day breakfast. Other options include some delicious starters (such as thai fish cakes) and a range of burgers and sandwiches. For something more special, try salmon fillet with sweet chili sauce. Wide range of teas and ice-creams, opposite Endcliffe Park |
1 Rustlings Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 7AA United Kingdom |
Although the name of this cafe draws attention to its impressive range of sorbets, ice-creams and sundaes, it is more than a gelateria. The cosy décor is English domestic and the staff show traditional Yorkshire friendliness. Customers are offered a wider choice of teas than of coffees and cups are refilled at no extra cost. Lunches include sandwiches (hot, cold and toasted), jacket potatoes and main meals such as omelettes, fish and chips or sausage and mash. There is also a separate children's menu. Full English breakfasts are available, including a vegetarian option with veggie burger and sausage. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional cafe in the city centre |
252 Midland Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S71 4DN United Kingdom +44 1226 72 2479 |
This is an attractive, very traditional cafe, which serves reasonably-priced, good quality food to eat in or take away. A wide range of sandwiches, jacket potatoes, sausage rolls and pasties, hot meals, tea, coffee and soft drinks is on the menu. There are tables on the pavement outside the cafe, and on a sunny day, this is a most pleasant place to sit, as Surrey Street is located right next to Fargate, Sheffield's main pedestrian shopping area. Specialist tea and coffee shop and cafe |
York Street Unit 3-4 Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2ER United Kingdom +44 114 275 7772 |
This specialist tea and coffee merchant was established in Sheffield in 1879. Nowadays, the smell of freshly ground coffee beans wafts out of the shop when it is open, tempting customers in. Once you're there, an impressive variety of good quality tea and coffee products are displayed behind a traditional sales counter. The knowledgeable sales staff will be pleased to help you choose from the wide selection - or you could try before you buy in the adjoining coffee shop. This popular self-service cafe, which is decorated in a comfortable, modern style, also offers light meals and snacks. Why not order the speciality coffee of the week and try something new? Lively pub at city end of Ecclesall Road |
255 Ecclesall Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8NX United Kingdom +44 114 266 5922 |
This modern pub at the city end of Ecclesall Road has a large open plan drinking area with chunky wooden tables and plenty of standing space. A small seating area is also available outside. The clientele is mixed, but mainly comprises younger people (the age range is from about 18 to 30) and students, especially in the evenings. Draught beers include John Smith's, Theakston's, Guinness and a range of reasonably priced snacks and main courses are also available. The menu includes snacks such as filled Yorkshire puddings, or main meals (options include beef and ale pie and lasagne). This is a lively pub that can be crowded. A pool table and games machines are provided for the use of customers and a DJ plays on Wednesday and Saturday nights. The volume of music and TVs in this pub is usually loud. The atmosphere is welcoming - but don't expect a quiet night out! Review © 2007, Wcities |
