One of the best around |
197 Whitham Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2SP United Kingdom +44 114 266 2802 |
This is apparently TV chef Ainsley Harriet's favourite chippy, and it really is one of the best around. As well as the usual fish, chips, kebabs, burgers and sausages, the Friery is constantly expanding its range, which now includes interesting alternatives such as lasagne, chilli con carne, spring rolls, cajun chicken and even calamari. The service is excellent: a particularly nice touch is the way in which all orders come with a few complementary chips. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of the food available makes this one of the best fish and chip shops in Yorkshire. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small, lively Italian restaurant |
129 Newbould Lane Broomhill Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2PL United Kingdom +44 114 266 9656 |
Floor-to-ceiling windows allow you to see exactly what Cafe Buon Cibo is all about even before you enter: it's small, with a simple, modern interior and is popular with young and old alike, though it's usually quite lively. The choice is extensive and is augmented by an ever-changing range of delicious specials on the blackboard. There's no charge for corkage and if you'd like to take alcohol with you, you'll find an off-licence conveniently situated directly opposite the restaurant. Broomhill can be reached from Sheffield city centre within a ten minute walk or three minute taxi ride. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Informal, lively setting |
10 Commonside Walkley Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1GB United Kingdom +44 114 268 6983 |
Chez Lahlou offers great food in an informal, lively setting. It is popular locally and is usually busy. Subtle lighting and attentive service means it feels intimate enough to appeal to couples (though bear in mind that it is small and that the tables are close together) but it also attracts small groups and families. The atmosphere is laid back and nothing is rushed, but given the gargantuan portions on offer that's no bad thing, as you'll probably need time between courses to recover. The garlic sausage starter is a meal in itself and the French and Italian-themed main courses, like the fillet aux trois poivres, are accompanied by a mountain of vegetables. Warm chocolate profiteroles and other delights await the few who can still manage a dessert. This is definitely a place to linger. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional carvery and pub |
486 Manchester Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 5DT United Kingdom +44 114 266 2113 |
This traditional, long-established pub is very popular with Sheffield locals, many of whom make a weekly pilgrimage here for Sunday lunch. There are separate entrances for the pub and restaurant, although once inside you can move freely from one area to the other through an interconnecting door. The pub serves Bass ales, and offers a dozen or so bar meals at about £4, such as lasagne and chips or fish and vegetables. The carvery, which is more spacious and feels more recently decorated, offers a starter and English roast dinner for only £6 and is open for lunch and dinner. Be aware that the carvery soon fills up, especially at weekends; if you want to eat here, it is advisable to arrive early. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Modern coffee shop and Bistro with varied menu |
9-13 Ashgate House, Ashgate Road Broomhill Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 3BZ United Kingdom +44 114 268 4977 http://www.fable.org.uk/ |
Located alongside the S10 Gallery, and also owned by the F.A.B.L.E. Charity which helps epilepsy sufferers, the Fables Coffee shop isn't what you'd think of as a charity coffee shop. In fact, it is much more like a trendy city centre cafe-bar, where even Victoria Beckham wouldn't look out of place! The décor is modern but comfortable and the space is flooded in light. The Coffee Shop/Bistro offers a varied choice or great food in a relaxed, friendly environment. There isn't a bar so it's bring your own bottle, though there is a corkage fee. Homely, family-run Italian |
253 Crookes Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1TF United Kingdom +44 114 266 5245 |
The walls of the small dining room in this family-run restaurant are adorned with postcards from satisfied regulars; the fact that there isn't much room left for more says a good deal about the quality of both food and service. Franco's serves impressive homestyle Italian cooking: pizzas, rich pancakes and pasta dishes (less if you want them as a half portion for a starter), while chicken and steak dishes in a variety of sauces. The eating area is cosy but space is tight, and with the most extensive ice cream menu you're ever likely to see waiting to tempt you, it'll be tighter still when you leave. No charge is made for own-bottle corkage. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Upmarket bar and restaurant |
375-385 Glossop Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2HQ United Kingdom +44 114 275 5665 |
This branch of the national chain, situated close to Sheffield University and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, is an attractive conversion of a Victorian villa. The large bar and separate restaurant area are stylishly decorated, and there is an emphasis on stainless steel and wood. The bar is famous throughout Sheffield for its cocktail menu and is popular with young professionals. An extensive menu of generally fresh food is available: starters begin at around £3.75 and standard main courses range from about £8 to £10. Luxuries such as grilled sea bream with garlic and capsicum are available from the specials board. A large car park is provided for the use of customers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Simple with excellent food |
176 Crookes Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1UH United Kingdom +44 114 266 6052 |
If you see someone wandering through the Crookes area with a pint of beer in their hand, you can be fairly sure they're heading for Indian Chef. You can take drinks bought from the nearby Ball Inn into the restaurant or bring a bottle of wine or two from home if you prefer (there's no charge for corkage). Once inside the small, open-plan dining area, you can order from an extensive choice of reasonably priced dishes: a starter won't set you back more than £2.50, and a very pleasant chicken tikka kurma costs around £6. The quality of food is excellent but furnishings are simple and as this isn't in the city centre it isn't the kind of restaurant visitors tend to discover for themselves. Locals and students form the core of the evening clientèle, although the daytime opening hours also make this an interesting business lunch option. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine Indian cuisine at reasonable prices |
182 Northfield Road Crookes Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1QQ United Kingdom +44 114 266 1802 |
Jaflong, which offers fine Indian food in simple, comfortable surroundings and at very reasonable prices, is popular with students, locals and visitors alike. It is slightly off the beaten track, but if you have to go out of your way to find it, it will be well worth the effort. The décor doesn't distinguish it from many other Indian restaurants; it is the quality of the food which makes it stand out. There are starters and main courses such as sizzling shaslik chicken or king prawn bhuna are about. There are plenty of vegetarian options and the chef will try to accommodate any special requests. Although the restaurant is licensed, you may bring your own wine (but not beer), for which there is no corkage charge. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Spacious local with plenty to offer |
3 Crookes Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1UA United Kingdom +44 114 266 0322 |
The Old Grindstone has broad appeal, but also retains its local character, with an open fire and old-fashioned furnishings. It boasts up to eight cask ales, including Kelham Island Gold and a surprisingly good (for a local pub) range of coffees and wines. Food is served at lunchtimes and in the early evenings; the quality is usually good and there is a real emphasis on local produce and dishes (such as Henderson's meat and potato pie). A varied programme of entertainment is also provided; live jazz is played on a Monday night and the excellent games room boasts three pool tables. But the pub is large and if all you want is a quiet evening drink by the fire, the well-planned interior can also accommodate that. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Net access and imaginative snacks |
198 Whitham Road Broomhill Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2SS United Kingdom +44 114 266 7979 http://www.refreshcafe.co.uk/ |
Refresh offers those passing through Broomhill the chance to surf the Internet or to indulge in something from an imaginative drink and snack menu. There are currently eight 633mhz Pentium computers, with Internet access available from about £1.25 (for fifteen minutes). A coffee or tea (with exotic names such as "chi" and "passion") cost around £1.50, while a sandwich is between £2 and £3. Despite the facilities on offer, many of the business people, students and shoppers who pop in choose simply to eat or drink here, but the cafe is usually busy. When current expansion is complete in May 2001, Refresh will offer a substantially increased number of computers and a range of computer-related business, consultancy and training services. Superb Italian coffee bar |
259 Fulwood Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 3BD United Kingdom +44 114 266 5459 |
It doesn't matter what time you go to Remo's; it's always busy. This is definitely a good sign, so fight your way in if necessary - it's worth it! There are tables in the back, but most customers crowd into the tiny bar area for conversation, great Italian coffee, pastries and freshly made sandwiches on ciabatta or focaccia breads. If you're bored, you can watch television - but in Italian, of course! Remo's is a tiny piece of Italy in a Sheffield suburb and it's a gem. Don't miss it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

High quality modern bistro |
32-34 Sandygate Rd Crosspool Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 4 DQ United Kingdom +44 114 266 6096 http://www.thymeforfood.co.uk/... |
This restaurant is very much a star attraction in Sheffield and should appeal to anyone who enjoys excellent food but is unsure what to eat. Although these two restaurants are owned and operated by Richard Smith, the adjacency does provide patrons to the building a feeling of variety. Artisan, the contemporary bistro, presents a casual stylish stmosphere serving up all the dishes you would expect from a café including Bangers and Mash, Beef Fillets, or Shepards Pie. Upstairs, patrons are greeted to a quaint, informal seafood restaurant with an array of fresh dishes from Chesapeake seafood chowder to a Spaghetti of langoustines. Both restaurants are open seven days a week. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular sandwich shop |
321 Glossop Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2 HP United Kingdom +44 114 276 0232 |
The location of this small sandwich shop (situated right by Sheffield University and central hospitals, opposite the West End Hotel) means that it gets very busy, but there are plenty of staff on hand to ensure you won't be waiting long. The quality of sandwiches is excellent and alongside the standard fillings on offer are such delights as cajun chicken and Mexican vegetarian, both at a little over a pound, as well as jacket potatoes, bhajis and every variety of crisp flavor and soft drink you've ever heard of. If it's a hot sandwich you're after, try to get here before 2.15p, when the hotplate is usually switched off. Scott's takes telephone orders, which may be collected, and can provide catering for functions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Unique, Afro-Caribbean restaurant |
257 Fulwood Road Sheffield S10 3BD United Kingdom +44 (0)114 268 7807 / +44 (0)7886 42 3785 (Hotline) http://www.ukmama.co.uk/ |
UK Mama was the first African/Caribbean restaurant in Sheffield and it still maintains an excellent reputation for providing the genuine article when it comes to food. Start with opirima (fried plantains) and follow that with beef and okra, or gungo pea stew with minced meat. The restaurant is quite small and booking is recommended. The décor is typically Afro-Caribbean, with bright murals and photos of black icons including Lennox Lewis and Prince Naseem Hamed. Note that service can be a bit slow at the busiest times and that wheelchair access may be difficult due to limited space. All dishes are also available as a takeaway option, and there is free delivery within a three mile radius. Review © 2007, Wcities |
