Broomhill Friery

One of the best around
197 Whitham Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2SP
United Kingdom
+44 114 266 2802
This is apparently TV chef Ainsley Harriet's favourite chippy, and it really is one of the best around. As well as the usual fish, chips, kebabs, burgers and sausages, the Friery is constantly expanding its range, which now includes interesting alternatives such as lasagne, chilli con carne, spring rolls, cajun chicken and even calamari. The service is excellent: a particularly nice touch is the way in which all orders come with a few complementary chips. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of the food available makes this one of the best fish and chip shops in Yorkshire.

Caffé Uno

Smart but relaxing with impressive menu
631-633 Ecclesall Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8PT
United Kingdom
+44 114 267 0565
http://www.caffeuno.co.uk/
Caffé Uno is part of a national chain with a deserved reputation for providing good quality food at reasonable prices. This outlet, near Hunter's Bar, provides customers with well presented, high quality Italian food such as spaghetti carbonara or pollo al rosmario (chicken with rosemary). This is a bright, modern restaurant with plenty of space and a mixed clientele. It is an excellent place to meet friends or business colleagues in the certainty that you are not going to be disappointed. It is equally good for coffee and snacks. Staff is cheerful and obliging and the restaurant is very child friendly; in fact, the attitude towards families is quite Italian. A small bar area is available for pre-dinner drinks.

Deli on the Wicker

Delicious and unusual sandwiches
7 The Wicker Arches
Walker Street
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 8GZ
United Kingdom
+44 114 249 5555
Queues form every lunchtime in the shop under the railway arches at the end of the Wicker for a choice of sandwiches from bacon and brie to poached fresh salmon, from cajun chicken and lime dressing to strawberry jam. Look out for the "special" sandwich of the week, which will be advertised inside the shop. A good range of vegetarian options (such as soft cheese, apricots and walnuts) are available. Jacket potatoes, sweet and savoury pastries and the soup of the day are also offered. Tea, coffee and soft drinks are all sold, and you can eat in at the attractive loft-style cafe upstairs, which is extremely comfortable with wooden furniture and some easy chairs.

Dore Moor Inn

Food and drink all day
Hathersage Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S17 3AB
United Kingdom
+44 114 235 5121
This large pub-restaurant, situated close to some of the surrounding area's most beautiful countryside, has built up a great reputation locally as an excellent place to eat. There is a small bar area but this is mainly used as a place to wait for tables: the separate eating section is larger and more comfortable. Food is served throughout the day and the menu includes Italian pasta dishes as well as chicken, fish and meat. Excellent, very big ice cream desserts are served. Food is reasonably priced and tables can usually be found quite quickly, as the eating area is so large. A children's menu is also available.

Fat Cat

Real ale and quality food
23 Alma Street
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 8SA
United Kingdom
+44 114 249 4801
With a fine selection of ales, which change on a regular basis, The Fat Cat is the real deal for the real-ale connoisseur. Some of the beers are home-brewed but others, such as perennial favorite Timothy Taylor's, are established favorites. The food is excellent, with an innovative menu that changes daily. Children of all ages are welcome and the atmosphere is homely, with an open fire blazing in the winter months. Inside, the pub can seem cramped but the pretty, sheltered garden offers an attractive alternative.

Frankie and Benny's

Large Italian and American restaurant (bar included)
Valley Centertainment
Broughton Lane
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S9 2DX
United Kingdom
+44 114 256 1138
This large Italian and American restaurant, located in a busy entertainment area, also houses a bar. The restaurant is spacious and comfortable, with chunky wooden furniture and open-plan seating areas, which allow you to see your meal being prepared. A good range of Italian food such as pasta and pizza is available, as are American foods and desserts. This is an unusual but enjoyable combination and the menu includes some excellent options. Prices are very reasonable and a separate bar serves alcohol and a full range of other drinks, so that you can enjoy drinks before or after your meal. This restaurant is part of a national chain, but while it isn't the most adventurous or individual place to eat in Sheffield, the high standard of both food and service is consistent and reliable. A cinema, bowling lanes and trams are all situated within walking distance of this restaurant.

Rivelin Hotel

Fine pub in a beautiful location
Tofts Lane
Stannington
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S6 5SL
United Kingdom
+44 114 233 3247
It's easy to forget that you're only five minutes from the traffic chaos at Hillsborough when you're enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds the Rivelin Hotel, which faces down an impossibly steep side road onto the A6101 Rivelin Valley Road. Its proximity to the Rivelin Valley Nature Trail makes the small beer garden a popular choice with local families, (accompanied by their children and dogs) on warm afternoons. Inside, it is comfortable and traditional, with slightly old-fashioned fittings, and has a hospitable, local feel. A decent choice of snacks and meals is served every lunchtime and on Friday evenings. Afternoon opening times are sometimes extended if trade is brisk.

Rock Island Diner

American rock and roll theme restaurant.
54 The Oasis
Meadowhall
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S9 1EP
United Kingdom
+44 114 256 8844
This American rock and roll restaurant, which is designed to resemble an American diner, with individual booths and novelty life-sized mannequins, serves an assortment of American food and drink at reasonable prices. The atmosphere is lively: a resident DJ will play your musical requests and the rest of the staff also provide the occasional dance. (This isn't the place for a quiet night out.) The restaurant is situated in a busy shopping and eating part of the Meadowhall, and is large and carefully planned; even the shape of seating varies from booth to booth! The food is mostly of the hamburger, chips and ice-cream variety, but the quality is usually high and is reasonably priced.

Sheaf Quays Pub and Restaurant

Stunning setting; great value for money
Wharf Road
Victoria Quays
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 5SY
United Kingdom
+44 114 273 7370
Situated on the Victoria Quays, this Tom Cobleigh pub overlooks the canal and is a great place for a relaxing drink or an evening meal. The menu is varied and unique for a pub menu in that it offers not only wholesome, home-cooked food but also healthy eating alternatives. For those who like to both eat out and watch what they eat, the healthy heart menu here is perfect. All the food is freshly prepared, the service is very friendly and personal, and the value is unbelievable.

Terrazza

Friendly restaurant in popular suburb
352 Sharrowvale Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8ZP
United Kingdom
+44 114 268 5150
This pleasant and relatively small Italian restaurant, located in a busy area of Sheffield, is open every evening and has a very relaxed atmosphere. It is popular for family gatherings, students dining with parents and convivial groups of all sorts. It hums with conversation and popular tunes from decades past almost from the minute it opens every night. The pale green papered walls are enlivened with paintings and posters of Italian resorts (which can prove very tempting if you're planning your next holiday) and the menu is based on a series of steak, chicken and fish dishes: there are some delicious options. There is also a varied wine list and bar.

Three Merry Lads

Pub/restaurant at the city's edge
610 Redmires Road
Lodgemoor
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 4LJ
United Kingdom
+44 114 230 2824
This venue is more of a restaurant than a pub nowadays, though a bar area is still available for those who only want to drink. A large, more formal area is set aside for eating and the thoughtful menu goes well beyond the range of average pub fare. You can choose from bites and starters, and there should be something among the varied seafood, vegetarian and meat options to appeal to most tastes. Food is served at lunchtimes and in the early evening Monday-Saturday every day. The bar selection includes Chardonnay and Tetley's, as well as a choice of real ales. There is also a beer garden, complete with stunning views and a playground; this is an excellent place to enjoy a balmy summer evening. Customers tend to include a good number of couples and families.

Uncle Sam's Chuck Wagon

American themed burger restaurant
298 Ecclesall Road
Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8PE
United Kingdom
+44 114 266 8588
This burger restaurant with an American theme is extremely popular with local families and groups of young people as well as with couples, who tend to eat here later in the evening or at lunchtimes. Uncle Sam's Chuck Wagon is not part of a chain and it has an excellent, if somewhat individual, atmosphere. Seating is comfortable but not luxurious: it is modelled on the American diner theme and has an informal feel. The menu provides good value for money, although it is fairly conventional. Some Mexican dishes are also available, such as burritos. The restaurant is licensed and air-conditioned (though this isn't always essential in Sheffield!) Customers can have a quiet drink while they wait for a table at a small bar area near the entrance. Booking is not required, except for larger groups.
