Sophisticated Italian restaurant |
Unit 8-10 Cambridge St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4HN United Kingdom +44 114 273 0073 http://www.askcentral.co.uk/ |
ASK Pasta and Pizza serves exactly what the name suggests, but in a rather superior way. This modern city centre restaurant is cool in the extreme, incorporating white walls, pale floors, and black wooden chairs, all of which provide sophisticated and spacious surroundings for a pleasant and relaxing meal. In this restaurant, you're made to feel comfortable whether you're with friends or on your own. Not surprisingly, there's lots of fresh pasta and pizza, but there are also options such as bruschetta with marinated tomatoes, red onions and basil - this is very good value given the quality of both food and surroundings. Small Italian restaurant |
119 Devonshire Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 7SB United Kingdom +44 114 279 9394 |
This cosy, city centre-based Italian restaurant, which is decorated in the style of a traditional Italian bistro, with small tables, brightly coloured tablecloths and subdued lighting, offers a wide range of pizza, pasta and lasagne dishes (and more). Main meals cost around £9. The delicious ravioli dishes are particularly popular and the various lasagne meals are also recommended. This is an ideal place to come for a celebration or to start a night out and service is excellent. Customers can bring their own wine - but book in plenty of time, as BB's is extremely popular, especially at weekends. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fashionable but friendly |
The Old Fire Station, Division St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4GF United Kingdom +44 114 279 2900 |
One of Sheffield's most popular bars, this converted fire station is where the city's trendsetters hang out. Exposed brick walls, high ceilings, a lot of stainless steel, very bright colours and a number of sofas all add to the very fashionable effect. However, both atmosphere and service are friendly and relaxed and the music is not obtrusive. The bar is always busy at night, especially on weekends. A full menu offers snacks, finger food, wraps and sandwiches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Colourful, welcoming vegetarian and vegan cafe |
2 St. James Street, Cathedral Square Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2EW United Kingdom +44 114 276 3443 |
This is a colourful and sociable place to eat. There's no need to take a magazine - the notice board has bright and plentiful reading on events and organizations around Sheffield. The menu mixes cuisine from Mexico to the Mediterranean to provide tasty and filling lunches at reasonable prices. Tea and coffee are also a delight (a range of both is available) and service is friendly and accommodating. This is a lovely place to eat and drink, with an excellent range of options for vegetarians and vegans. In warm weather, outside seating is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Simple but sophisticated |
Millennium Galleries Arundel Gate Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2PP United Kingdom +44 114 278 2600 |
As the name suggests, Cafe Azure is cool and blue. But what else would you expect? This restaurant/cafe is the main source of refreshment in the prestigious new Millennium Galleries and well-worth a visit in its own right. It's a high, airy venue with plenty of space. Additional tables are provided outside on Arundel Gate. The food is simple but sophisticated, with a good range of sandwiches and some attractive main courses, such as salmon and prawn fish cakes. Service can be slow but the restaurant is licensed and, given its situation, could become one of the most popular places to meet in Sheffield. The atmosphere, generally, is laid back—you will feel comfortable here even if you're on your own. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Comprehensive range of coffees |
1-3 Leopold Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2GY United Kingdom +44 114 270 6566 |
Misleadingly named, Coffee.com is not crammed full of internet surfers or computers, but it is a great place to sample a comprehensive range of coffees and browse through the newspapers. Pale orange and light blue walls, wooden flooring and stainless steel tables create a fashionable atmosphere and though the cafe is small, tables are widely spaced so it never feels crowded. Choose between Colombian, Costa Rican, Kenyan, Javan and Ethiopian beans served as cappuccinos, filter coffees or as deliciously smooth caffé lattes, or be more adventurous and try the iced or syrup-flavoured versions. Delicious and unusual sandwiches |
7 The Wicker Arches Walker Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 8GZ United Kingdom +44 114 249 5555 |
Queues form every lunchtime in the shop under the railway arches at the end of the Wicker for a choice of sandwiches from bacon and brie to poached fresh salmon, from cajun chicken and lime dressing to strawberry jam. Look out for the "special" sandwich of the week, which will be advertised inside the shop. A good range of vegetarian options (such as soft cheese, apricots and walnuts) are available. Jacket potatoes, sweet and savoury pastries and the soup of the day are also offered. Tea, coffee and soft drinks are all sold, and you can eat in at the attractive loft-style cafe upstairs, which is extremely comfortable with wooden furniture and some easy chairs. Italian restaurant with Mexican connections |
33 Carver Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4FS United Kingdom +44 114 275 5264 |
La Gondola is a well-established Italian restaurant with a lovely relaxed atmosphere and a great reputation for good, simple cooking, and it is very popular within Sheffield. The usual range of Italian pasta and pizzas are available from £6 to £8, and a more unusual range of Mexican dishes - for instance a Mexican tortilla filled with beef, red beans and chilli - provide a variety of slightly more expensive options. House wine is very reasonably priced, and don't miss the specials boards - in all likelihood, the chef will be doing something interesting with mussels or other seasonal ingredients. The décor is bright and lighting subdued, which creates a relaxed atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sophisticated cafe-bar and Sheffield institution |
28 Cambridge St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4HP United Kingdom +44 114 275 2342 |
Although it is now a national chain, Henry's is a bit of a Sheffield institution. It opened in 1982 as one of the first "Henry's" in the country (and probably the first cafe-bar in Sheffield) and is still going strong. It occupies a corner site right in the city centre and is popular with both shoppers and business-people alike. Food is served all day: expect excellent coffee and tempting cakes, as well as a range of bottled beers and wines, or choose from the full menu (prices range from about £5), which includes a substantial all-day breakfast. Other options include some delicious starters (such as thai fish cakes) and a range of burgers and sandwiches. For something more special, try salmon fillet with sweet chili sauce. Atmospheric Greek restaurant |
117 Fitzwilliam St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4JP United Kingdom +44 114 272 6000 |
This very large Greek restaurant is based in the city centre, offering Greek and British dishes at reasonable prices. The moussaka is particularly delicious as are other Greek specialities. Though food is only served for two hours, the restaurant stays open into the early hours. Wine can be ordered and a bar serves excellent local bitters. The restaurant is popular with large groups, who enjoy the lively atmosphere which includes traditional plate smashing. Dancing and singing also take place around a small stage. Booking is advisable and can be arranged in person or by phone. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Intimate, friendly, Italian food |
111-115 Norfolk Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2JE United Kingdom +44 114 272 0490 http://www.mamas.co.uk/ |
Established in 1968, this intimate Italian cafe/restaurant, which is based over two floors, has a rustic, slightly old-fashioned feel. Period posters decorate the walls and the tables are covered in bright decorative cloths. The restaurant is deservedly popular with theatre-goers (it is situated within a three minute walk of the Crucible and Lyceum theatres), local couples and families, so it is advisable to book in advance. The food, which is freshly prepared on the premises, more than lives up to its excellent reputation. The menu offers a wide range of home-made speciality pizzas and pastas. The speciality Della Casa offer includes pizza and soup or salad. A more adventurous "Extravaganzas" menu is also available, as is a range of salads, vegetarian options and a "Bambini" menu for under-12yrs. Also, don't forget to try the house wine. Specialist tea and coffee shop and cafe |
York Street Unit 3-4 Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2ER United Kingdom +44 114 275 7772 |
This specialist tea and coffee merchant was established in Sheffield in 1879. Nowadays, the smell of freshly ground coffee beans wafts out of the shop when it is open, tempting customers in. Once you're there, an impressive variety of good quality tea and coffee products are displayed behind a traditional sales counter. The knowledgeable sales staff will be pleased to help you choose from the wide selection - or you could try before you buy in the adjoining coffee shop. This popular self-service cafe, which is decorated in a comfortable, modern style, also offers light meals and snacks. Why not order the speciality coffee of the week and try something new? Fashionable and airy |
2-6 Cambridge St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4HP United Kingdom +44 114 275 8330 |
This is a spacious, modern bar with parquet floors, an upstairs balcony and comfortable armchairs. It is decorated in bold, simple colours and attracts a young, mostly professional crowd. Food, which is served from 11a until 9:30p, is freshly prepared and comes in large portions. The extensive menu includes snacks such as tomato, cheese and olive bruschetta, Thai chicken nachos and other delicious platters to share. Main courses, soup noodles and pastas are also available. Simple and unpretentious |
4 Leadmill Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4SE United Kingdom +44 114 275 1966 |
Conveniently situated close to the justly popular Showroom Cinema and the mainline railway station, this new Indian restaurant is already a success. Its design is simple and unpretentious - a bit like the menu itself. Expect the usual range of curry and tandoori dishes at decent prices. The cooking generally is more than competent and you are unlikely to be disappointed. The restaurant is licensed and features an excellent all-day snack men. It is still most busy in the evenings, though. It attracts customers of all ages (with a 30-something bias) and can be very full at weekends, so expect to have to wait if you don't book. Stunning setting; great value for money |
Wharf Road Victoria Quays Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 5SY United Kingdom +44 114 273 7370 |
Situated on the Victoria Quays, this Tom Cobleigh pub overlooks the canal and is a great place for a relaxing drink or an evening meal. The menu is varied and unique for a pub menu in that it offers not only wholesome, home-cooked food but also healthy eating alternatives. For those who like to both eat out and watch what they eat, the healthy heart menu here is perfect. All the food is freshly prepared, the service is very friendly and personal, and the value is unbelievable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Very modern cafe within Site Gallery |
1 Brown Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2BS United Kingdom +44 114 281 2077 |
The Site Cafe is situated inside the Site Gallery complex. The Gallery itself is cool and very modern, so it's no surprise to find that the cafe is decorated in the same style - there are lots of white walls, with a few minimalist exhibits to admire (these change on a regular basis). This is a great place to relax, and to be laid-back and sophisticated. There's good coffee by Lavazza and Mediterranean food is a speciality, so don't expect anything as common as a sandwich; we're talking focaccia, panini and ciabatta here. However, the quality is excellent - try ciabatta with bacon, mushrooms and mozzarella. Alcoholic drinks are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |
