Sophisticated Italian restaurant |
Unit 8-10 Cambridge St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4HN United Kingdom +44 114 273 0073 http://www.askcentral.co.uk/ |
ASK Pasta and Pizza serves exactly what the name suggests, but in a rather superior way. This modern city centre restaurant is cool in the extreme, incorporating white walls, pale floors, and black wooden chairs, all of which provide sophisticated and spacious surroundings for a pleasant and relaxing meal. In this restaurant, you're made to feel comfortable whether you're with friends or on your own. Not surprisingly, there's lots of fresh pasta and pizza, but there are also options such as bruschetta with marinated tomatoes, red onions and basil - this is very good value given the quality of both food and surroundings. Asian Eatery close to Crystal Peaks Cinema Complex |
Waterthorpe Crescent Eckington Way Sheffield, South Yorkshire S20 - 3FG United Kingdom +44 114 247 2255 |
Amraj, an Asian restaurant located within 20 metres of the Crystal Peaks UCI Cinema Complex, serves authentic Asian cuisine in an authentic environment that is classy, with crisp white table cloths and traditional decorations, but is not over the top. The licensed restaurant offers excellent, freshly-prepared cuisine: starters are from about £1.50 to £3; curries start at about £4 and accompanying sundries are around £3 each. English dishes and children's meals are also available. A popular buffet every Monday evening (eat all you like for about £9 per person) means that booking is recommended on this day. Large parties are catered for and cocktails are available from the bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Long-established reputation |
307 Ecclesall Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8NX United Kingdom +44 114 268 3029 |
The Ashoka, one of the longest established Indian restaurants in Sheffield, continues to enjoy a well-deserved reputation for good quality food at reasonable prices. It is situated in a busy part of town and because it's open late at weekends, it is a convenient place to stop off before or after a night out in the city centre. It attracts couples and small groups of all ages and is almost always busy on Friday and Saturday nights, especially with the younger crowd - so remember to book! Earlier in the evening and during the week, it is generally quieter and so ideal for that romantic date; it is small and quite intimate, although it's worth remembering that tables are placed relatively close together. The restaurant is fully licensed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small Italian restaurant |
119 Devonshire Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 7SB United Kingdom +44 114 279 9394 |
This cosy, city centre-based Italian restaurant, which is decorated in the style of a traditional Italian bistro, with small tables, brightly coloured tablecloths and subdued lighting, offers a wide range of pizza, pasta and lasagne dishes (and more). Main meals cost around £9. The delicious ravioli dishes are particularly popular and the various lasagne meals are also recommended. This is an ideal place to come for a celebration or to start a night out and service is excellent. Customers can bring their own wine - but book in plenty of time, as BB's is extremely popular, especially at weekends. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Large restaurant with excellent reputation |
Brincliffe Hill Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 9DF United Kingdom +44 114 255 3263 |
This restaurant, which is based in two large rooms with lots of seating space, has an excellent reputation in Sheffield, although it is usually only open at lunchtimes. It serves delicious meals from an impressive menu. (Options which are particularly good include the succulent chicken in white wine with vegetables.) Alcohol is available from two bars and wine can be ordered from the table. This is an ideal venue for a business lunch or celebration. It also hosts occasional theme nights for the public and is available to hire for private evening functions. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Small informal restaurant with excellent range and quality |
655 Ecclesall Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8PP United Kingdom +44 114 268 7356 |
This small, informal restaurant, which is decorated with traditional Indian fabrics in bright Rajasthani colours, has seating on two floors and an excellent menu, which offers the whole spectrum of chicken, lamb, prawn and vegetable curries and starters (including kebabs and purées). The side-dishes include four types of Nan bread and rice cooked in eight different ways - including with egg, garlic, and mushrooms. The quality of the food belies the very reasonable prices. Service is very friendly and attentive, and although the premises are unlicensed, guests may bring their own drinks without any corkage charge. The restaurant is situated on the busy Ecclesall Road and attracts local couples and small groups of all ages as well as students. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Late-opening restaurant/takeaway |
216 Fulwood Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 3BB United Kingdom +44 114 266 6655 |
Balti King has achieved near-legendary status in Sheffield in the last few years. It is especially popular with students and with groups, largely because it stays open until 3am six days a week, and is unquestionably Broomhill's premier post-pub venue. The atmosphere is relaxed and the décor is plush and comfortable, but what really makes the restaurant stand out is the astonishing variety of the menu. There are around 200 dishes (as well as a decent selection of Indian and European bottled beer) to choose from and there are some delicious options. On top of this, the free delivery service (within a three mile radius) is custom-designed for couch potatoes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fashionable but friendly |
The Old Fire Station, Division St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4GF United Kingdom +44 114 279 2900 |
One of Sheffield's most popular bars, this converted fire station is where the city's trendsetters hang out. Exposed brick walls, high ceilings, a lot of stainless steel, very bright colours and a number of sofas all add to the very fashionable effect. However, both atmosphere and service are friendly and relaxed and the music is not obtrusive. The bar is always busy at night, especially on weekends. A full menu offers snacks, finger food, wraps and sandwiches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Originally Mr Kite's wine bar, this small restaurant has been popular in Sheffield for years. Attracting customers of all ages, especially families and couples, it has a friendly, Continental feel; tables spill out onto the pavement in warm weather and movie posters, old-fashioned signs and mirrors decorate the walls. The atmosphere is also very relaxed and service is leisurely. The restaurant is always busy, especially at night, when live bands sometimes play. The reasonably-priced menu includes options such as peppered chicken, swordfish steak, cheese and broccoli bake and a good range of pizzas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is a colourful and sociable place to eat. There's no need to take a magazine - the notice board has bright and plentiful reading on events and organizations around Sheffield. The menu mixes cuisine from Mexico to the Mediterranean to provide tasty and filling lunches at reasonable prices. Tea and coffee are also a delight (a range of both is available) and service is friendly and accommodating. Upmarket bar brasserie |
Charnwood Hotel 10 Sharrow Lane Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8AA United Kingdom +44 114 258 9411 |
Brasserie Leo is part of the Charnwood Hotel, but has its own entrance on London Road. The restaurant is based on two levels and its décor is stylish, incorporating a good deal of dark wood and mosaics as well as brass and large mirrors. It is very well-lit and this, in conjunction with white linen and a good number of windows, creates an airy, welcoming feel. Tables are widely spaced, so privacy is available for discreet business discussions, but though the atmosphere is relatively formal, the clientele usually includes a good number of locals as well as hotel guests. The menu is intelligent and innovative - for instance, a warm salad of peppered venison might be followed by a main course of sautéed king scallops. Also look out for the specials board, which offers some interesting alternatives to the main menu. Prices begin at about £4.50 for a starter and range from about £10 to £15 for a main course. The food isn't cheap but all the ingredients are fresh and the quality is extremely good. In addition to its advertised opening hours, Brasserie Leo will open at lunchtime on request. One of the best around |
197 Whitham Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2SP United Kingdom +44 114 266 2802 |
This is apparently TV chef Ainsley Harriet's favourite chippy, and it really is one of the best around. As well as the usual fish, chips, kebabs, burgers and sausages, the Friery is constantly expanding its range, which now includes interesting alternatives such as lasagne, chilli con carne, spring rolls, cajun chicken and even calamari. The service is excellent: a particularly nice touch is the way in which all orders come with a few complementary chips. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of the food available makes this one of the best fish and chip shops in Yorkshire. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Simple but sophisticated |
Millennium Galleries Arundel Gate Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2PP United Kingdom +44 114 278 2600 |
As the name suggests, Cafe Azure is cool and blue. But what else would you expect? This restaurant/cafe is the main source of refreshment in the prestigious new Millennium Galleries and well-worth a visit in its own right. It's a high, airy venue with plenty of space. Additional tables are provided outside on Arundel Gate. The food is simple but sophisticated, with a good range of sandwiches and some attractive main courses, such as salmon and prawn fish cakes. Service can be slow but the restaurant is licensed and, given its situation, could become one of the most popular places to meet in Sheffield. The atmosphere, generally, is laid back—you will feel comfortable here even if you're on your own. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Caffé Uno is part of a national chain with a deserved reputation for providing good quality food at reasonable prices. This outlet, near Hunter's Bar, provides customers with well presented, high quality Italian food such as spaghetti carbonara or pollo al rosmario (chicken with rosemary). This is a bright, modern restaurant with plenty of space and a mixed clientele. It is an excellent place to meet friends or business colleagues in the certainty that you are not going to be disappointed. It is equally good for coffee and snacks. Staff is cheerful and obliging and the restaurant is very child friendly; in fact, the attitude towards families is quite Italian. A small bar area is available for pre-dinner drinks. Big restaurant, big menu, big tables |
27 London Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 4LA United Kingdom +44 114 272 5311 |
This large restaurant (which seats 150) is accessed from street level via a relatively steep flight of stairs. Inside, the restaurant is usually busy but service is quick and efficient and you won't be kept waiting long to order. The tables are generally very large and there is no music: this is the sort of place that suits large groups rather than an intimate tête-à-tête. The menu is huge and food is usually both delicious and very good value - a set menu for two is from about £13 and drinks are also reasonably priced. Candytown is popular with members of the Chinese community as well as with family, office and business groups. Bear in mind that the entrance stairs are relatively steep and that there is no lift. You don't expect to find one of Sheffield's best restaurants in a building that looks a bit like a prefab beside a main railway line, but Carriages is extremely impressive, so be prepared for a surprise! The food is outstanding and the excellent reputation the restaurant has locally is richly deserved. The style is modern English, with starters, such as baked blue cheese tartlet with caramelised onions followed by unusual combinations like slow-roasted fillet of salmon with bubble and squeak and grilled proscuitto. If you've any room left, the puddings are equally worth exploring. The clientele includes professionals and couples and this is also a favourite venue for business meetings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Informal, lively setting |
10 Commonside Walkley Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1GB United Kingdom +44 114 268 6983 |
Chez Lahlou offers great food in an informal, lively setting. It is popular locally and is usually busy. Subtle lighting and attentive service means it feels intimate enough to appeal to couples (though bear in mind that it is small and that the tables are close together) but it also attracts small groups and families. The atmosphere is laid back and nothing is rushed, but given the gargantuan portions on offer that's no bad thing, as you'll probably need time between courses to recover. The garlic sausage starter is a meal in itself and the French and Italian-themed main courses, like the fillet aux trois poivres, are accompanied by a mountain of vegetables. Warm chocolate profiteroles and other delights await the few who can still manage a dessert. This is definitely a place to linger. Review © 2007, Wcities |

There are separate entrances for the pub and restaurant, although once inside you can move freely from one area to the other through an interconnecting door. The pub serves Bass ales, and offers a dozen or so bar meals at about £4, such as lasagne and chips or fish and vegetables. 176 Crookes Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1UH United Kingdom +44 114 266 6052 |
If you see someone wandering through the Crookes area with a pint of beer in their hand, you can be fairly sure they're heading for Indian Chef. You can take drinks bought from the nearby Ball Inn into the restaurant or bring a bottle of wine or two from home if you prefer (there's no charge for corkage). Once inside the small, open-plan dining area, you can order from an extensive choice of reasonably priced dishes: a starter won't set you back more than £2.50, and a very pleasant chicken tikka kurma costs around £6. The quality of food is excellent but furnishings are simple and as this isn't in the city centre it isn't the kind of restaurant visitors tend to discover for themselves. Locals and students form the core of the evening clientèle, although the daytime opening hours also make this an interesting business lunch option. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine Indian cuisine at reasonable prices |
182 Northfield Road Crookes Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1QQ United Kingdom +44 114 266 1802 |
Jaflong, which offers fine Indian food in simple, comfortable surroundings and at very reasonable prices, is popular with students, locals and visitors alike. It is slightly off the beaten track, but if you have to go out of your way to find it, it will be well worth the effort. The décor doesn't distinguish it from many other Indian restaurants; it is the quality of the food which makes it stand out. There are starters and main courses such as sizzling shaslik chicken or king prawn bhuna are about. There are plenty of vegetarian options and the chef will try to accommodate any special requests. Although the restaurant is licensed, you may bring your own wine (but not beer), for which there is no corkage charge. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wide range of teas and ice-creams, opposite Endcliffe Park |
1 Rustlings Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 7AA United Kingdom |
Although the name of this cafe draws attention to its impressive range of sorbets, ice-creams and sundaes, it is more than a gelateria. The cosy décor is English domestic and the staff show traditional Yorkshire friendliness. Customers are offered a wider choice of teas than of coffees and cups are refilled at no extra cost. Lunches include sandwiches (hot, cold and toasted), jacket potatoes and main meals such as omelettes, fish and chips or sausage and mash. There is also a separate children's menu. Full English breakfasts are available, including a vegetarian option with veggie burger and sausage. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Loud, lively Italian restaurant |
290 Glossop Rd Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 2HS United Kingdom +44 114 272 8260 |
This large restaurant, which is Italian with Spanish and Mexican connections, is usually very busy, with plenty of atmosphere. The décor and lighting are bright and have traditional Italian bistro overtones; each table has candles and a decorative plastic tablecloth. Conversation tends to be quite loud and the background music is turned up to compete. The food isn't outstanding but it is perfectly reasonable and includes the usual range of pastas and pizzas at £5-£10, as well as some more unusual options, such as sardines in tomato sauce and Mexican fajitas. Eat here if you're with a crowd or if you've already had a few drinks on West Street - the restaurant is close to town and is open until midnight. Large groups are welcome - but don't expect a peaceful evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kito's has had an excellent good reputation in Sheffield for over 10 years now - almost as long as it has been operational. The restaurant is simply decorated and furnished and there is nothing pretentious here, but expect to find a welcoming atmosphere and fresh, well-cooked ingredients. With a fishmonger next door, the fresh fish options are definitely worth a try! Review © 2007, Wcities |

This friendly family-run restaurant on Ecclesall Road is a popular choice with Sheffield diners looking for good value Italian fare. The décor has a rich feel, with brick wall and dark red and gold fabrics. As well as pizza, the menu offers pasta dishes, and risotto as well as a good choice of beef, chicken veal and seafood appetizers and a lighter lunchtime menu. The restaurant has a full bar and its own wine list, but you are also welcome to bring your own wine from Sunday to Thursday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This friendly local eatery is deservedly popular with local families and couples as well as business visitors and offers extremely good value for money. The menu is predictable Italian fare; pasta is available at reasonably priced and so are the pizzas. For something a little bit different, try chicken with parma ham. The restaurant is not licensed, but customers are welcome to bring their own wine. If you are feeling romantic, ask for the famous lucky table: half a dozen engagements are reputed to have started here! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Quality Italian restaurant |
234 Abbeydale Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S7 1FL United Kingdom +44 114 258 7664 |
Luna Rossa is a relatively recent addition to the Sheffield restaurant scene. Considering the amount of competition in Sheffield, any new Italian restaurant has to be good to survive - and Luna Rossa is. The menu demonstrates the basics of Italian cooking: good ingredients, simple techniques and bold flavours. There is pasta and pizza in abundance but if you look carefully you are certain to find something new and original. How about venison steak, Gorgonzola and spinach for instance? The restaurant has an informal atmosphere, is subtly decorated, and is popular with local couples. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional cafe in the city centre |
252 Midland Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S71 4DN United Kingdom +44 1226 72 2479 |
This is an attractive, very traditional cafe, which serves reasonably-priced, good quality food to eat in or take away. A wide range of sandwiches, jacket potatoes, sausage rolls and pasties, hot meals, tea, coffee and soft drinks is on the menu. There are tables on the pavement outside the cafe, and on a sunny day, this is a most pleasant place to sit, as Surrey Street is located right next to Fargate, Sheffield's main pedestrian shopping area. Atmospheric Greek restaurant |

This very large Greek restaurant is based in the city centre, offering Greek and British dishes at reasonable prices. The moussaka is particularly delicious as are other Greek specialities. Though food is only served for two hours, the restaurant stays open into the early hours. Wine can be ordered and a bar serves excellent local bitters. The restaurant is popular with large groups, who enjoy the lively atmosphere which includes traditional plate smashing. Dancing and singing also take place around a small stage. Booking is advisable and can be arranged in person or by phone. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Intimate, friendly, Italian food |
111-115 Norfolk Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2JE United Kingdom +44 114 272 0490 http://www.mamas.co.uk/ |
Established in 1968, this intimate Italian cafe/restaurant, which is based over two floors, has a rustic, slightly old-fashioned feel. Period posters decorate the walls and the tables are covered in bright decorative cloths. The restaurant is deservedly popular with theatre-goers (it is situated within a three minute walk of the Crucible and Lyceum theatres), local couples and families, so it is advisable to book in advance. The food, which is freshly prepared on the premises, more than lives up to its excellent reputation. The menu offers a wide range of home-made speciality pizzas and pastas. The speciality Della Casa offer includes pizza and soup or salad. A more adventurous "Extravaganzas" menu is also available, as is a range of salads, vegetarian options and a "Bambini" menu for under-12yrs. Also, don't forget to try the house wine. This Caribbean restaurant has now been established for almost two years, and has built quite a following in Sheffield. The menu concentrates on the main islands, Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad but do watch the specials boards, where dishes from the smaller islands sometimes appear. The menu isn't expensive, with starters like salt fish fritters priced at about £3.75 and a main course of jerk chicken at around £10. The restaurant is licensed and carries a range of Caribbean beers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bistro-style restaurant specializing in seafood |
271 Sharrow Vale Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8ZF United Kingdom +44 114 266 1069 |
The Mediterranean is one of perhaps half a dozen Sheffield restaurants which have deservedly earned a regional, not just a local, reputation. It specializes in interesting fish dishes, although alternatives (including vegetarian options) are available. Although the theme is Mediterranean, the emphasis is on Spain and, if you don't want the full monty, this is one of the few places in South Yorkshire where you can find genuine tapas. The restaurant is intimate with subdued lighting, candles and a distinctly Spanish feel. Music plays softly throughout the evening. It is popular with couples and with locals of all ages, who often eat here in small groups. A typical meal might include a pan-fried quail salad starter followed by an unusual and delicious dish called zarazuella - a sort of Spanish fish stew. Most of the waiters are Spanish and service is attentive but also laid back: you will not feel rushed. This is a great place to relax and think about that next holiday in the sun! Classy and cutting-edge |
Park Lodge Sheffield, South Yorkshire S8 0LA United Kingdom +44 114 235 3080 |
Seemingly based on a fashionable London brasserie, you might forget that you're still in Sheffield once you step inside this classy, internationally-flavored restaurant, which feels spacious and is decorated in a modern, understated way, in subdued colors, with a good deal of space around tables. There is a set menu as well as an à la carte menu, which consists of seven starters and eight main courses. Dishes are adventurous, steering well clear of the norm, and include several vegetarian options: the quality is generally excellent. The extensive wine list includes many reasonably-priced bottles as well as some more special options. This is a great place to spend an evening and is secluded enough to work well for a date, but is also formal enough to make it a good business choice. Service is attentive but not insistent and you will never feel rushed here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Morilles is a simply furnished but cosy little bistro, which is decorated in bright colours and has a bring your own wine policy which helps to keep prices down. In keeping with the general ambience, the menu lacks pretension but it does feature fresh ingredients, vivid flavours and good presentation. Try mussels with a piquant garlic and tomato sauce from about. For a main course you can't beat the beef stroganoff. The atmosphere is intimate and this is a great place for a romantic evening out. This friendly casino and restaurant is situated on a busy road and ranges over two floors. A large eating area upstairs serves full meals which range from about £10. Typically, fish or meat dishes with vegetables are offered (and salmon is a popular choice). The casino is situated downstairs. Several gaming tables play simulataneously and a reasonable choice of games are available. A bar also serves a range of local beers, spirits and liqueurs. The clientele covers a broad spectrum across all age groups. The club has until recently seemed mainly male-based, but young couples and small groups of young women are now seen here more regularly. Open the door of Nonna's and you could almost be in northern Italy: real Italian coffee, pasta, wine, olives, prosciutto, and even Italian newspapers are all available. A coffee bar, restaurant and deli are shoehorned into what used to be a butcher's shop: this means the restaurant is small and booking is essential, but it is well worth the effort. Real Italian food and the freshest ingredients are cooked to perfection. In all, Nonna's is a little gem—almost too good to share! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Spacious local with plenty to offer |
3 Crookes Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 1UA United Kingdom +44 114 266 0322 |
The Old Grindstone has broad appeal, but also retains its local character, with an open fire and old-fashioned furnishings. It boasts up to eight cask ales, including Kelham Island Gold and a surprisingly good (for a local pub) range of coffees and wines. Food is served at lunchtimes and in the early evenings; the quality is usually good and there is a real emphasis on local produce and dishes (such as Henderson's meat and potato pie). A varied programme of entertainment is also provided; live jazz is played on a Monday night and the excellent games room boasts three pool tables. But the pub is large and if all you want is a quiet evening drink by the fire, the well-planned interior can also accommodate that. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Spacious with excellent food |
186 London Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 6PG United Kingdom +44 114 255 1722 |
Eating Italian food in the heart of Sheffield might appear a little surreal but there are plenty of authentic Italian-owned restaurants about, and Pavarotti's is no exception; the quality of Italian cuisine here will make you feel as though you're sitting in the centre of Rome. The size of this cafe/restaurant is deceptive from the outside; the interior has two floors and is spacious. The main feature on the first floor is the semi-circular bar area, which allows diners to see the open-plan kitchen area, so they can watch food being freshly prepared. The menu offers everything you would expect of an Italian eatery and the rich aroma adds to this expectation from the moment you enter. Prices are very good and the portion sizes would not shame any Italian Mama. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant pizza parlour (and jazz club) |
124 Devonshire St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S3 7SF United Kingdom +44 114 275 2755 |
Stainless steel, light polished wood and white walls with blocks of vibrant colour all help to make this large, modern restaurant feel both stylish and relaxed. Tables are discreetly arranged and customers often seem to be discussing business or on a date, although the restaurant is popular with families in the early evenings. Good provision is also made for groups, which tend to be seated on the upper floor where possible. The wide range of freshly-baked Italian style pizzas (priced from about £6)includes pizza veneziana, with raisins and pine kernels, pizza alle nocci with gorgonzola, spinach and walnuts and the pizza fiorentina, a vegetarian alternative which includes spinach and a free range egg. A few pasta dishes are also available and the excellent sweet menu includes chocolate fudge cake and luxury ice-cream bombes. Live jazz is played on the upper floor approximately once a month (see the website for details). Booking is not usually available and this can mean that the bar area is crowded and that service sometimes feels rushed, but the impressive quality of the food invariably compensates for this. Draught beers include John Smith's, Theakston's, Guinness and a range of reasonably priced snacks and main courses are also available. The menu includes snacks such as filled Yorkshire puddings, or main meals (options include beef and ale pie and lasagne). This is a lively pub that can be crowded. Popular, innovative and excellent value |
220 Oakbrook Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 7ED United Kingdom +44 114 230 4819 |
You might easily miss this unusually-shaped restaurant - but that would be a tragedy! Housed upstairs in a seemingly nondescript building just round the corner from Nether Green Post Office, it features some of the most interesting and innovative cooking in South Yorkshire and has a justly excellent reputation in Sheffield. Try something unusual, like filo samosas with curried monkfish, or something traditional - such as braised lamb shank with root vegetables. Whichever route you take you will be pleasantly surprised by both taste and price - it won't cost much more than £25 per head for three courses. This is definitely not one to miss. Service is helpful but not intrusive and the décor is contemporary. The restaurant is popular with local couples as well as with small groups of professionals and business visitors. Refresh offers those passing through Broomhill the chance to surf the Internet or to indulge in something from an imaginative drink and snack menu. There are currently eight 633mhz Pentium computers, with Internet access available from about £1.25 (for fifteen minutes). A coffee or tea (with exotic names such as "chi" and "passion") cost around £1.50, while a sandwich is between £2 and £3. Despite the facilities on offer, many of the business people, students and shoppers who pop in choose simply to eat or drink here, but the cafe is usually busy. This restaurant is very much a star attraction in Sheffield and should appeal to anyone who enjoys excellent food but is unsure what to eat. Although these two restaurants are owned and operated by Richard Smith, the adjacency does provide patrons to the building a feeling of variety. The standard of both food and service in Rossi's is very high, but its most unusual feature is that it is housed in a former bank. This creates a great feeling of space - and eating between marble pillars certainly adds something special to the evening. You can choose from the usual range of pasta and pizzas and even this section of the menu makes you feel that what you are getting is the real thing. At the more expensive end of the menu, expect some interesting options, from about £14 per person, such as a casserole of fish and vegetables with saffron rice - a dish for two people to share. Service is excellent and as street parking is available outside, the doorman will even keep an eye on your car while you eat. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Santino's is so good it has expanded to take over the shop next door - and it still fills up quickly! This is definitely one restaurant where booking is advisable, particularly for mid-evening and weekend meals. White walls and murals create an almost Roman feel. The restaurant is owned and run by Italians and this shows in the menu, which runs far beyond pasta and pizza. You could start with a selection of cured meats served with marinated peppers (antipasto con pepperocino) and, for the main course, try vitello valdostana (scallops of veal cooked with mushrooms and white wine). Service is attentive but the atmosphere is laid back: this is a place to relax and enjoy your evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This excellent pub/restaurant can be reached by taxi or car in about twenty minutes from Sheffield city center. It is situated off the A625 just below Hathersage's St Michael's and All Angels Church. Although you can pop in for just a drink (and the fine Burtonwood beers definitely make this option worthwhile), most people come here to eat. The eating area is comfortable and the menu offers a great deal of variety and includes fresh seafood, traditional roasts and moussaka. The quality of the food here is very much superior to average pub fare. There are also five attractive, and well-decorated bedrooms, which cost around £30 per person. The Scotsman's Pack offers charm, tradition and, when it isn't crowded, a very personable feel, making it a delightful place to visit. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The main hotel building is stone and is about 100 years old; extensions and outbuildings (such as the Lakeside Restaurant) are more modern. The restaurant, which has an adjoining patio, serves from early mornings until 9:45pm. The hotel hosts a series of summer events from June to September, many of which are music-based. A marquee is also available for special events. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Very modern cafe within Site Gallery |
1 Brown Street Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2BS United Kingdom +44 114 281 2077 |
The Site Cafe is situated inside the Site Gallery complex. The Gallery itself is cool and very modern, so it's no surprise to find that the cafe is decorated in the same style - there are lots of white walls, with a few minimalist exhibits to admire (these change on a regular basis). This is a great place to relax, and to be laid-back and sophisticated. There's good coffee by Lavazza and Mediterranean food is a speciality, so don't expect anything as common as a sandwich; we're talking focaccia, panini and ciabatta here. However, the quality is excellent - try ciabatta with bacon, mushrooms and mozzarella. Alcoholic drinks are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Drink or even sing in welcoming country pub |
569 Redmires Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 4LJ United Kingdom +44 114 230 1935 |
Located right at the western tip of the city on the old Roman road past Lodge Moor, you're unlikely just to chance upon the Sportsman, but it's worth the effort to search it out if you fancy spending time in a friendly, traditional local pub. It's cosy and welcoming in winter and on warm summer evenings the tranquil surroundings make it the perfect place to sit outside, enjoy a drink and watch the sun set over the stunning Rivelin valley. A range of real ales includes Timothy Taylor Landlord. Simple but appetising homemade dishes such as quiche or chilli are served from midday until 2.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Most of the regulars (who vary considerably in age) are very friendly and if you pop in on a Thursday evening at any time of the year, you can even sing along to the piano with them! The pub can be reached from Sheffield city centre within a 10-15 minute taxi ride. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Friendly restaurant in popular suburb |
352 Sharrowvale Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8ZP United Kingdom +44 114 268 5150 |
This pleasant and relatively small Italian restaurant, located in a busy area of Sheffield, is open every evening and has a very relaxed atmosphere. It is popular for family gatherings, students dining with parents and convivial groups of all sorts. It hums with conversation and popular tunes from decades past almost from the minute it opens every night. The pale green papered walls are enlivened with paintings and posters of Italian resorts (which can prove very tempting if you're planning your next holiday) and the menu is based on a series of steak, chicken and fish dishes: there are some delicious options. There is also a varied wine list and bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Subtle Thai cuisine for discerning diners |
85 Junction Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8XA United Kingdom +44 114 266 0805 |
This is subtle Thai cuisine for discerning diners. Whether you want a romantic meal for two or an evening out with friends, you will feel comfortable here: couples and small groups of all ages make up most of the restaurant's clientele. Customers are seated at the bar downstairs (which is decorated entirely in white) for pre-dinner drinks when they first arrive and can choose from an extensive menu of subtly spiced meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes, which include Thai green, red and massaman curries with rice or noodles. The set menus from around £15 for a minimum of two people are excellent and allow you to sample some of this wonderful variety. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great value food; wonderfully friendly environment |
Hellaby Lane, Hellaby, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S66 8HN United Kingdom +44 1709 73 0083 |
Don't be put off by the name of this restaurant: yes, it is designed for truckers, but that is where the stereotype ends. The restaurant and bar here accommodate any food taste, and are popular with local people. The surroundings are those of an old country house; the food is served carvery style, and the bigger your appetite the better. Food is available from the early morning. Lunch and dinner options include freshly baked pies, roasts, filled Yorkshire puddings, and salads. The vegetable side dishes are a meal in themselves. There is also a great selection of desserts, which change daily. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Pub/restaurant at the city's edge |
610 Redmires Road Lodgemoor Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 4LJ United Kingdom +44 114 230 2824 |
This venue is more of a restaurant than a pub nowadays, though a bar area is still available for those who only want to drink. A large, more formal area is set aside for eating and the thoughtful menu goes well beyond the range of average pub fare. You can choose from bites and starters, and there should be something among the varied seafood, vegetarian and meat options to appeal to most tastes. Food is served at lunchtimes and in the early evening Monday-Saturday every day. The bar selection includes Chardonnay and Tetley's, as well as a choice of real ales. There is also a beer garden, complete with stunning views and a playground; this is an excellent place to enjoy a balmy summer evening. Customers tend to include a good number of couples and families. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Intimate wine bar in simple surroundings |
89 Trippet Lane Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4EL United Kingdom +44 114 278 0198 |
Trippet's is one of those rare places that's so good you can't believe your luck when you find it! In a side street close to the city centre, this intimate wine bar provides excellent food and wine in a simple setting. There are two rooms, one of which is furnished with wide wooden tables and is used for eating and drinking, while the back room (which is more sparsely furnished) is mainly for music and dancing. The bar has a late license until 1 am and live music - mainly rhythm and blues - plays on Friday and Saturday nights. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Traditional fish and chip shop and fishmongers, established 1885 |
249 Sharrowvale Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8PX United Kingdom +44 114 266 5694 http://www.sharrowvale.co.uk/t... |
Sample Britain's most well-known national delicacy (fish fried in batter and chips to take away) at this very traditional Yorkshire shop, which was established in 1895 and has been in business ever since. You will have to queue for your freshly cooked meal, but you can learn about the history of the business, the road and the local area from the detailed display on the wall while you wait. Fish is purchased fresh daily from ports around Scotland and the North of England and is available for you to buy and take home to cook as you wish: the range of fresh fish here is probably the most extensive in Sheffield. Sausages, pies and vegetarian snacks are also available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Unique, Afro-Caribbean restaurant |
257 Fulwood Road Sheffield S10 3BD United Kingdom +44 (0)114 268 7807 / +44 (0)7886 42 3785 (Hotline) http://www.ukmama.co.uk/ |
UK Mama was the first African/Caribbean restaurant in Sheffield and it still maintains an excellent reputation for providing the genuine article when it comes to food. Start with opirima (fried plantains) and follow that with beef and okra, or gungo pea stew with minced meat. The restaurant is quite small and booking is recommended. The décor is typically Afro-Caribbean, with bright murals and photos of black icons including Lennox Lewis and Prince Naseem Hamed. Note that service can be a bit slow at the busiest times and that wheelchair access may be difficult due to limited space. All dishes are also available as a takeaway option, and there is free delivery within a three mile radius. Review © 2007, Wcities |

American themed burger restaurant |
298 Ecclesall Road Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8PE United Kingdom +44 114 266 8588 |
This burger restaurant with an American theme is extremely popular with local families and groups of young people as well as with couples, who tend to eat here later in the evening or at lunchtimes. Uncle Sam's Chuck Wagon is not part of a chain and it has an excellent, if somewhat individual, atmosphere. Seating is comfortable but not luxurious: it is modelled on the American diner theme and has an informal feel. The menu provides good value for money, although it is fairly conventional. Some Mexican dishes are also available, such as burritos. The restaurant is licensed and air-conditioned (though this isn't always essential in Sheffield!) Customers can have a quiet drink while they wait for a table at a small bar area near the entrance. Booking is not required, except for larger groups. Review © 2007, Wcities |

More than just Indian hospitality |
17-21 Charter Square Sheffield S1 4HS United Kingdom +44 (0)114 272 8839 http://www.vijays.co.uk/ |
Strategically located next to the Grosvenor House Hotel, Vijays is situated just opposite Empire Bar. So when hunger strikes, make your way to Charter Square, and this Bollywood inspired Indian restaurant will be at your service. If you happen to come here on Sundays or Tuesdays, you can avail of the "Two for One meal deal". If Indian cuisine is not your thing, you can also opt for European fare. The table buffet is another option out here. The only downside is that they don't provide parking; you might want to use public transport while traveling to this place. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Welcoming suburban Italian restaurant |
52 Sandygate Road Crosspool Sheffield, South Yorkshire S10 5RY United Kingdom +44 114 266 9811 |
Villa Caruso occupies a typical semi-detached property at the top end of the shopping centre in Crosspool (a suburb accessible within a 5 to ten minute taxi ride from the city centre). The restaurant is small and isn't especially attractive from the outside, but inside, it is comfortable and has a warm, informal feel, due in large part to its inimitable staff, who always seem to have time to chat. The menu offers a typical selection of Italian dishes (such as pizzas, pasta and pancakes at £6-£7 or chicken and steak from £9). Villa Caruso is popular with families and local couples, who dine together in small groups and who invariably arrive with a generous supply of wine from the off-licence next door. Tables are placed quite close together and though this adds to the energetic, communal atmosphere, it does mean the restaurant isn't ideal for romantic meals or for private discussions. However, customers do tend to linger here and though service is attentive, you'll never feel rushed. There are occasional special menus and theme nights, which are usually well worth catching; these tend to be advertised within the restaurant itself, but you can also ring for further details. Taste extravaganza |
284 South Road Walkley Sheffield, South Yorkshire S6 3TE United Kingdom +44 114 233 3574 |
Go Italian at Vito's and you are guaranteed a taste extravaganza. This restaurant, which is decorated in the style of an upmarket bistro, is a fish specialist but the full range of dishes you would expect of an authentic Italian restaurant are also served here. The menu offers eight varieties of fresh fish, but other favourites include venison, huge king prawns and fillet of pork in calvados. There is also a wealth of pasta dishes and pizza is available for those with a less adventurous palate. There is a large wine list from reasonable prices to wine so expensive you could take a mortgage out on it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Total relaxation by day, clubbers by night |
Carver St Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 4FS United Kingdom +44 114 241 3400 http://www.walkabout.eu.com/ |
With décor inspired by all things Australian and signs using language straight out of the worst Aussie soaps, Walkabout is a popular venue with students and young locals. Its city-centre location ensures that, on weekend evenings, its roomy dance floor is packed with pre-club revellers. During the week, the promotional drinks offers draw in students. Weekly events include karaoke, sports nights, live music and tribute band nights. By day, the scene is one of total relaxation with large comfy sofas to chill out on and TV screens to entertain. Walkabout is also one of the very few Sheffield city centre pubs to have a large beer garden. Review © 2007, Wcities |
