Cruise along the Sheffield canal, enjoying the views this comfortable and unusual restaurant offers. A Thirty Nine (a refurbished cargo carrier now traditionally decorated) attracts families, couples, and professionals of all ages. The boat can also be chartered for private parties or business functions. A range of traditional English meat dishes are offered and vegetarian options are also available. Trout with almonds and the deliciously smooth creamy leek croustade are recommended. (2 course meals are from about £30.) House wine is from about £8 a bottle and a bar is also available. Reservations can be made for Wednesday and Friday evenings and for Sunday lunchtime. The first Saturday evening in every month is also available.

+44 114 255 3263 This restaurant, which is based in two large rooms with lots of seating space, has an excellent reputation in Sheffield, although it is usually only open at lunchtimes. It serves delicious meals from an impressive menu. (Options which are particularly good include the succulent chicken in white wine with vegetables.) Alcohol is available from two bars and wine can be ordered from the table. This is an ideal venue for a business lunch or celebration. It also hosts occasional theme nights for the public and is available to hire for private evening functions.

Sit in a booth or at a long table or sip cocktails from the luxurious comfy sofas in the bar area. At Damon's restaurant, the American theme ensures big choice, big portions and a big atmosphere. In Sheffield, Damon's has an unrivalled reputation for its spicy ribs. The menu offers some tasty options and there is an impressive choice of cocktails. This is a particularly good place to host a celebration and anyone celebrating a birthday here eats for free.

+44 114 256 8844 This American rock and roll restaurant, which is designed to resemble an American diner, with individual booths and novelty life-sized mannequins, serves an assortment of American food and drink at reasonable prices. The atmosphere is lively: a resident DJ will play your musical requests and the rest of the staff also provide the occasional dance. (This isn't the place for a quiet night out.) The restaurant is situated in a busy shopping and eating part of the Meadowhall, and is large and carefully planned; even the shape of seating varies from booth to booth! The food is mostly of the hamburger, chips and ice-cream variety, but the quality is usually high and is reasonably priced.

+44 114 266 9811 Villa Caruso occupies a typical semi-detached property at the top end of the shopping centre in Crosspool (a suburb accessible within a 5 to ten minute taxi ride from the city centre). The restaurant is small and isn't especially attractive from the outside, but inside, it is comfortable and has a warm, informal feel, due in large part to its inimitable staff, who always seem to have time to chat. The menu offers a typical selection of Italian dishes (such as pizzas, pasta and pancakes at £6-£7 or chicken and steak from £9). Villa Caruso is popular with families and local couples, who dine together in small groups and who invariably arrive with a generous supply of wine from the off-licence next door. Tables are placed quite close together and though this adds to the energetic, communal atmosphere, it does mean the restaurant isn't ideal for romantic meals or for private discussions. However, customers do tend to linger here and though service is attentive, you'll never feel rushed. There are occasional special menus and theme nights, which are usually well worth catching; these tend to be advertised within the restaurant itself, but you can also ring for further details.
