Set in over forty acres of spectacular cliff-top gardens, this famous amusement park is a mix of fantasy, legend and heritage. The heritage element is covered by St Catherine's Quay, which depicts the dramatic story of Blackgang's coast, and Blackgang Sawmill, which has working steam and oil engines. These tours are the best free informative entertainment on the South Coast. A Blue Badge guide takes you to points of historical interest. You can see where Henry V and his army left for Agincourt; where Richard the Lionheart had his only Christmas Dinner as king; medieval vaults where wine was stored and local townspeople sheltered during the Blitz; where Shakespeare popped in for a pint and then wrote about it in Henry V; where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail in 1620 and much more. Tours leave from the Bargate (by the clearly marked signpost) and take one and a half hours. They are free for individuals and groups of less than eight. This scenic New Forest village is handily located on bus routes between Bournemouth and Southampton, making it ideal for a day trip. Clarence Pier is situated on the shoreline of the Solent and boasts splendid panoramic views. The walks are free and you will be guided and advised by an expert officer from Southampton's Parks and Commons Team. This miniature passenger railway travels from Southampton Parkway station to Monks Brook Halt, where there is a children's playground and picnic area overlooking a scenic lake. A model railway exhibition is on display and there is also a souvenir shop. The one and a quarter mile journey takes 15 to 20 minutes and all trains return to Parkway, which is approximately eight miles from Southampton city centre. A trip to this scenic island off the coast is highly recommended. You can take in 60 miles of coast, visit the Ventnor Botanic Gardens, experience Osborne House or see the donkeys working the well wheel at Carisbrooke Castle where Charles l was imprisoned, as featured in the children's book Moonfleet. Lymington was Luntune in the Domesday book, as well as the scene for parts of The Children of the New Forest. You can have a great day out here, with charming 18th century alleys and houses, a smuggler's tunnel under the High Street, cobblestones, lovely pubs, charming shops and tea rooms. It gets completely packed out on Saturdays, when market stalls take over the hill of the High Street. Lymington also houses a fascinating museum and is home to the world famous Royal Lymington Yacht Club, occasionally frequented by its most famous patron, the Princess Royal. This combined amusement park and zoo features a variety of exciting rides, ranging from a water-splash roller coaster for the big and adventurous to the Teacup Ride for the small and timid. Although there is a height restriction of one metre on most rides, there are plenty of attractions for younger children and for the grown-ups there are landscaped grounds to explore, including a zoo, farm animals and a large collection of exotic birds. If you do not want a picnic there is a restaurant serving basic, with-chips meals, plus tea rooms and several fast food kiosks. The Rapids is advertised as the complete swimming adventure and it certainly has many water features, such as bubble seats, water jets and storm showers. Salisbury is a must-do day trip from Southampton. Easily accessible by train, and perhaps most famous for its cathedral. Also think Golding and The Spire.
