Largest single yacht race in the world |
Island Sailing Club - High Street, Cowes Southampton, Hampshire PO31 7RE United Kingdom +44 1983 29 6911 http://www.roundtheisland.org.uk/ |
The Round the Island Race is the largest single yacht race in the world. Run by the Island Sailing Club, it is a straight race around the Isle of Wight, starting and finishing at Cowes. About 1500 boats compete each year and any yacht of any shape or size can take part, as a handicapping system is used to determine the winner. Everyone that finishes receives a tankard and the victor collects the prestigious Roman Golden Bowl. Good vantage points to observe the action include The Needles, St. Catherine's Point and Ryde Pier, all on the Isle of Wight, and Hurst Point on the mainland. Review © 2007, Wcities |
