Lymington was Luntune in the Domesday book, as well as the scene for parts of The Children of the New Forest. You can have a great day out here, with charming 18th century alleys and houses, a smuggler's tunnel under the High Street, cobblestones, lovely pubs, charming shops and tea rooms. It gets completely packed out on Saturdays, when market stalls take over the hill of the High Street. Lymington also houses a fascinating museum and is home to the world famous Royal Lymington Yacht Club, occasionally frequented by its most famous patron, the Princess Royal. Marwell is one of Britain's leading zoological parks. Founded in 1972, it currently has over 200 rare and endangered species in its breeding programmes. It specialises in hoofed animals, but also features a wide variety of creatures ranging from giraffe to spiders. The site is huge (around 100 acres) but there are trains to carry visitors around the enclosures. For lunch there is a choice between the restaurant and several picnic sites and there is a gift shop which includes an extensive selection of books. The Round the Island Race is the largest single yacht race in the world. Run by the Island Sailing Club, it is a straight race around the Isle of Wight, starting and finishing at Cowes. Everyone that finishes receives a tankard and the victor collects the prestigious Roman Golden Bowl.
