This miniature passenger railway travels from Southampton Parkway station to Monks Brook Halt, where there is a children's playground and picnic area overlooking a scenic lake. A model railway exhibition is on display and there is also a souvenir shop. The one and a quarter mile journey takes 15 to 20 minutes and all trains return to Parkway, which is approximately eight miles from Southampton city centre. The SS Shieldhall is a fully operational, old fashioned steamship that docks at Ocean Village when it is not on a voyage. Although built in 1950, the ship has a classic design from the 1920s. After 30 years of service, it was carefully restored and preserved by Solent Steam Packet Limited and still regularly goes to sea. Part of the Southampton Sports Centre complex in Bassett, the municipal golf course is the perfect place to relax and take in a round or two. There is a full 18-hole course and a smaller 9-hole course, plus club hire and refreshments. At selected times during the week expert tuition is available for new players and limited free play times are offered if you join Southampton City Council's Leisure Card Scheme.
