The Round the Island Race is the largest single yacht race in the world. Run by the Island Sailing Club, it is a straight race around the Isle of Wight, starting and finishing at Cowes. About 1500 boats compete each year and any yacht of any shape or size can take part, as a handicapping system is used to determine the winner. Everyone that finishes receives a tankard and the victor collects the prestigious Roman Golden Bowl. Good vantage points to observe the action include The Needles, St. Catherine's Point and Ryde Pier, all on the Isle of Wight, and Hurst Point on the mainland.

Viking Ship

Replica cargo ship
Western Esplanade
Southampton, Hampshire SO15 1AG
United Kingdom
+44 2380 83 3333
This fascinating replica cargo boat sits by Southampton's waterfront and is a very popular tourist attraction. Although it is called the Viking ship and looks like a Viking ship, it is actually a keel. It was the main type of boat used to carry cargo in and out of Southampton between 1200 and 1400. During the 13th century alone, these keels were used to import thousands of casks of wine, by the local descendants of those who came to England with William the Conqueror. Unfortunately, because the boats were notoriously slow, they were also easy prey for pirates!

Winchester is one of the most historic towns in Britain. An important regional centre in Roman times, it was the capital of England during the reign of Alfred the Great. Its centrepiece is a stunning cathedral where Mary Tudor married and Jane Austen lies buried alongside ancient kings of England. Also pay a visit to the Great Hall of Winchester Castle, where a Round Table with possible connections to the mythical King Arthur hangs on the wall. You can wander through luscious water meadows to St Cross, in the footsteps of Keats, then round off your day with a drink at a traditional English pub, like The Old Monk.
