The Round the Island Race is the largest single yacht race in the world. Run by the Island Sailing Club, it is a straight race around the Isle of Wight, starting and finishing at Cowes. About 1500 boats compete each year and any yacht of any shape or size can take part, as a handicapping system is used to determine the winner. Good vantage points to observe the action include The Needles, St. Catherine's Point and Ryde Pier, all on the Isle of Wight, and Hurst Point on the mainland.
