Shopping Arcade |
Bargate Centre East Bargate Southampton, Hampshire SO14 1HF United Kingdom +44 8700 11 0477 http://www.bargate.co.uk |
This stylish shopping centre houses an interesting collection of niche shops that sell exotic shoes, candles, clubbing gear, accessories and computer games, amongst other things. The centre also has a large Sega Park on the first floor and an Internet cafe in the basement, which makes it a good place to hang out when you've had enough of shopping. Based on three floors, it was once Southampton's main shopping centre, but it now faces stiff competition from both the Marlands Centre and WestQuay. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Beach is a fun club for the over 20s, with a good-humoured atmosphere and a mostly single crowd. Water-fights, wet T-shirt competitions and beach party themes make for outrageous entertainment until the early hours of the morning. The venue has a hot and steamy air in the heat of the summer months, which is often fuelled by the dance-floor action and the party atmosphere. Among these entertaining nightlight scenes is the small, charming pub, the Hobbit, which hosts the biggest beer garden in Southampton. Southampton United Kingdom |
Just off the main high street on Commercial Road you will find the City Art Gallery, which boasts a collection of over 2700 works of art, spanning six centuries. Around the corner, in the same complex of buildings, is the Guildhall, which is the city's major venue for rock, pop and classical concerts. A five minute walk away, following down Commercial Road, is the Mayflower Theatre, the main venue for great musicals, ballets and opera. Past the busy shopping precinct stands the historical Bargate, one of the surviving gateways to the city. Look up when you are walking through and you may see the damage caused by trams, which attempted to pass through the middle until 1949 and sometimes didn't quite make it. Other places of interest in the lower part of town are the Tudor House Museum, which gives a fascinating insight into 15th century life, and the Maritime Museum. This gives a history of the development of the port and tells in detail the story of the famous Titanic, which began its ill-fated voyage from Southampton in 1912. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Art gallery, library, law courts, guildhall and cafe |
Civic Centre Road Southampton, Hampshire SO14 7LP United Kingdom +44 2380 83 2277 |
This large complex was the first building of its type to be called a Civic Centre. Designed by Mr E Berry Webber, with foundation stone laid in 1930, it was built on the site of the West Marlands leper colony. The Law Courts moved here in 1933 and it is also home to the Guildhall, the Library and the Reference Library, which contains stacks of local information. The City Art Gallery, one of the best in Europe, opened in 1939 and the excellent Fountains Café can also be found on the premises. Plaques inside mark US involvement in World War II - this was the headquarters of the 14th Major Port. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Alternative/rock club |
30 Bevois Valley Road Southampton, Hampshire SO14 0JR United Kingdom +44 2380 22 7081 |
This alternative/rock club in Bevois Valley is the hiding place for those who like their music loud, fast and bone crushingly heavy. Narrow steps lead down to confined, underground surroundings, with a low ceiling and hand painted walls. Black T-shirts are compulsory for the long haired lads, leather and fishnets for the vampiric girls. The young crowd respond enthusiastically to new bands like Slipknot, but sit back down, bored, when relatively old hands like Metallica are aired. If it all gets too heavy, there is a garden to cool down in. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Party songs and cheap drinks |
8 Queensway Southampton, Hampshire SO14 3AZ United Kingdom +44 2380 39 9889 |
This late closing club offers a party atmosphere and great value on drinks. Smart-casually dressed clubbers dance until 2a on Friday and Saturday nights to a mixed soundtrack of club anthems, chart music and cheesy party songs. Two-for-one drinks promotions are regularly run, while on Sundays many drinks cost a very cheap amount, although the club is probably most well known for its male dancers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Earthy live music venue |
141 St Mary's Street Southampton, Hampshire S014 1NS United Kingdom +44 2380 22 5612 |
The Joiners Arms is something of an institution for live music in Southampton. Over the years, numerous acts that have gone on to make it big have appeared on its stage, including Primal Scream and James. Don't expect luxury surroundings. The Joiners is an earthy place, while its clientele are a real mix. Expect to see punks, hippies, goths, anything. The front of the pub is fairly small, with a pool table, and the back of the pub is where the bands play. If you like live music and a lively mixed atmosphere, this is the place for you. If you like clean-cut bars and a quiet drink, then it is not recommended! Review © 2007, Wcities |
