Traditional religious dance |
Avenida de la Constitución Catedral de Sevilla Sevilla 41001 +34 95 421 4971 |
The origin of the Seises goes back to the 16th century, as choirboys assisted at Mass and sang and danced to religious songs. Today, the children that form part of this liturgical tradition are part of Our Lady of the Kings Choir School, performing in The Dance of the Seises throughout the year: during the Triduo of Carnival (February), Corpus Christi (June), and the Immaculate Conception Feast (December). The traditional outfits are of special note, as is the use of the traditional castanets and, of course, the dance itself. Admission is free. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Carrer D'Arístides Maillol 12 Barcelona, Barcelona 08028 +34 (0)3 9 3496 3600 http://www.fcbarcelonaweb.com/... |
The Nou Camp or Camp Nou in Spanish, is the largest football Stadium in Europe. Built in 1957, this is the home of the Barcelona Football Club, commonly known as 'barca' to the locals. The ground is also known as 'The house that Kubala built'. In the 1950s, Kubula used to be a great goal scorer. This Hungarian was so popular with the spectators that the stadium was unable to accomadate the sheer number of supporters who wanted to watch him. A new bigger stadium was eventually built. Now, it can accomadate 98,000 fans. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Ancient Pagan Tradition |
Valencia, Valencia |
Las Carnestoltes refers to the carnival season in Valencia, which begins in the month of February. It has its roots in paganism, and was celebrated in the old days by putting up straw figures all over in the villages. These were intended to spurn the devil, and were burned on Ash Wednesday with all participants dressed up in varying disguises. Today, the celebrations in Valencia involve costumes, parties, music and dancing, and a general feeling of good cheer reigns over the city. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The cultural activity in many neighborhoods in Salamanca is truly remarkable. This center''s main objective is to channel the different cultural projects promoted by the associations in these areas, particularly those in the Pizarrales neighborhood. Here you can enjoy all sorts of activities, ranging from exhibitions to concerts or plays. Apart from taking part in a cultural program called Salamanca en Vivo (Salamanca Live), this former church from the turn of the century also organizes exhibitions featuring the works of several artists, particularly those from Salamanca: sculptors such as Noé Gil, ceramicists like Gregorio Sánchez, actors such as the mime artist Josechu or Alejandro Lucas, etc. In short, they offer a wide variety of shows and events definitely worth a visit. Summer international band festival |
Palau de la Música Paseo de la Alameda, 30 Valencia 46023 +34 96 337 5020 |
Scheduled as part of the festivities in the Feria de Julio, specifically the first two weeks in July, this international town band competition has become increasingly popular. It dates back to 1886 and is held in either the Bullring or the Palau de La Música. Bands are more than just tradition in the autonomous community of Valencia; they are an integral part of life. Every single festival or "fiesta" will include marching bands or concerts of one sort or another, and every town, big or small, will have at least one municipal band. In some towns, such as Llíria just a few kilometers from Valencia, the prestige of their bands is internationally known. This international contest is a treat for music lovers and a challenge for the musicians of Valencia. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Of special note is the Prince's Door, where winning bullfighters are carried out triumphantly on the shoulders of fellow men before the demanding audience. Most important festival in Valencia |
A traves de la ciudad Valencia, Valencia http://www.fallas.com/ |
Las Fallas, Valencia's world-renowned festival, is the city's most important social event. More than 350 monuments made out of cardboard, wood and other materials take to the streets. Designed by artisans to satirize situations or well-known figures (ninots), they are set up on 15 March (the plantà) and are the centre of attention until the 19th when they are set fire (the cremà), turning a year's work into ash and rubble. All of this is accompanied by mascletàs, with thousands of kilos of firecrackers and fireworks being set off, open air concerts and the traditional offering of flowers to Madrededéu dels Desamparats, Valencia's (female) patron saint. These are just some of the events which make this entire week of festivities commemorating Saint Joseph so famous. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The city's largest festival |
Calle Adolfo Rodríguez Jurado 2 Adolfo Rodríguez Jurado, 2 Sevilla 41001 +34 95 421 1091 |
This festival began in 1847 as a yearly livestock concentration of a commercial nature. Today, Seville explodes into colour, lights and beauty in what is called Real de la Feria, in the Los Remedios neighbourhood, a concentration of hundreds of canvas shacks that become a sort of improvised home where people eat, drink and dance to the beat of sevillanas (traditional folk music) during the week-long party. The bullfights, held in the Maestranza bullring, are very popular too. By day a family-style fair is held, where friends and acquaintances get together. At night young people invade the streets of Real de la Feria and dance the night away. Review © 2007, Wcities |

It is a messy, free-for-all, meaning you can take your best shot at friends and family, your neighbour or the folks on the other side of the street. The 'battle' usually lasts a couple of hours until the red-stained torsos and streets are washed off with hundreds of hoses. On 31st October, 1755, Lisbon was struck by an earthquake, which made even Salamanca tremble. The people took refuge in the cathedral and the bells tolled by themselves. The little bell in the belfry, which can only ring if you enter from the outside, also rang out. As there were no casualties in Salamanca, the Cabildo Catedralicio (Cathedral Council) declared that on the eve of All Saints, one person would climb up to ring the bell in the belfry to thank God. Age-old traditional parades |
Ontinyet Valencia 46870 |
The fighting between the Moors and the Christians lasted several centuries in Valencia. Fortunately, the only thing that remains today from these bloody battles is what has been converted into a festival celebrating the victory of the Christians over the Moors in the 13th century. Towns such as Alcoy, Bocairent and Ontinyent are the most well-known for this particular tradition. The marches are organised locally and feature an authentic explosion of color and magnificance in terms of costumes, especially those of the Moorish troops. Popular religious act |
Plaza del Pilar Zaragoza 50003 |
On the day of the Virgin of Pilar, October 12th, hundreds of thousands of the inhabitants of Zaragoza are joined by foreigners in the Plaza del Pilar, many of them in regional costume, to place a bunch of flowers in honor of the Virgin. This tradition, which has its origins in the post-war period, is one of the most important and popular events of the festivities surrounding the Virgin. From daybreak, when the Aurora procession finishes, until late in the evening a veritable mountain of fragrance and color builds up in front of the image of the Virgin, which remains undisturbed until the end of the Fiestas del Pilar celebrations. Procession of the patron saint of Seville |
Avenida de la Consitución Sevilla, Seville 41001 |
The existence of the statue of the Virgin of the Kings goes back to the 13th century, when the king Saint Ferdinand kept it on his personal altar, until his death in 1252. The statue is sculpted in wood, and her hair is made of golden silk thread. In the chapel of the cathedral, she stands guard before the tombs of certain relevant historical figures: King Alfonso X and Queen Beatriz de Suabia, King Ferdinand IV, King Alfonso XI, King Pedro I, and the other patron saint of Seville, Saint Ferdinand. The procession begins early on the 15th of August, and takes place near the cathedral. It is a free event. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The idiosyncrasy of Spanish soccer |

The Real Betis Balompie Royal Betis Soccer Club) has been both on top of it all and at rock bottom. They have been the champions of almost everything possible in Spanish soccer, and they maintain the philosophy that you grow from your strife. They are enthusiasts that know how to form their own identity based on the stoic motto manque pierda (even in loss). In the mid 1990s, with the arrival of Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, the club lived its best times. Players of international standing such as Alfonso, Finidi and Denilson were added to the ranks, and a new stadium was built. The Real Betis then made a place for itself with the so-called big teams of Spanish soccer. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Kings bring cake |
Plaza del Pilar Zaragoza 50001 |
The ring-shaped Roscón de Reyes is the traditional cake eaten on January 6 in most Spanish homes. It is filled with whipped cream and always has a surprise present hidden inside which everyone hopes to find in his or her portion (except when this means paying for all or part of the food and drink, as often happens). The giant version of this cake is cut every year at midday in the Plaza del Pilar to mark the end of the Christmas festivities. A glass of hot chocolate comes with your piece of cake, to help you recover from the very probable over-indulgences of the previous few days. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bring on the bulls! |
Streets of Pamplona Pamplona, Navarre |
A mere 45 kms away from the city of Valencia, Sanfermines is a festival that signals the start of the bullfighting season in Spain each year. It takes place in the town of Pamplona. The week-long celebrations have youngsters thronging the streets - music, food, dancing and drinking are the order of the day, and each morning, a fighting bull is let loose in the streets leading to the bullring. Daring youth run ahead of the animal, proving their prowess. Unfortunately, several are injured each year - fatalities are sometimes inevitable. Despite these occurrences, Pamplona's annual bull-run is one of the most famous festivals in Spain, and there are several other towns that mark the start of the bullfighting season in a similar fashion. Every neighbourhood in Barcelona celebrates its patron saint day with grand festivities. In September the lively fishermen's district of La Barceloneta takes its turn. To start with, a bizarre and grotesque French character by the name of General Bum Bum strolls around the streets followed by the local kids. Then, there are all sorts of organized cultural and sporting events along with firework displays and street parties where people sing habaneras (songs composed by Catalans who went to Cuba to make their fortune). Most of the action takes place around Plaça de la Barceloneta and Plaça del Font. This neighborhood has a lot of character that has maintained its most colorful traditions over generations. Holy Week celebrations |
Casco antiguo Madrid, Madrid 28013 |
Easter is a deeply religious time in Spain, a time of fasting, penance and processions through Madrid's old town to commemorate the life and suffering of Christ. These are intensely moving visual and aural experiences that include the sound of trumpets, drums and spiritual flamenco songs combined with the spectacle of penitents dressed in dark cloaks and hoods dragging crosses and carrying religious statues. It's all a powerful expression of popular religious devotion. Major events take place on Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Palm Sunday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Various venues Bilbao, Vizcaya |
The ancient religious festival of Semana Santa during Easter Week sees the city caught up in a flurry of activity. It has been celebrated for over 500 years, and begins on "Passion Friday", when a procession of hooded devotees roam the streets trailed by mournful sounding drums and trumpets. The event then shifts to the towns of Vizcayan, where the last days of Christ are re-enacted by various actors; understudies prepare for the role of Christ three years in advance, for playing the prophet is considered a serious commitment. The fest ends on the first Sunday of Easter, which is celebrated with the running of the bulls in the town of Zumaia. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Since the 16th century, Seville has been illuminated during Holy Week. Fifty-two brotherhoods and more than 100 'pasos' (portable platforms carried on the shoulders of the brotherhood members, representing scenes from Christ's Passion) pass through the downtown streets accompanied by 'nazarenos' (penitents wearing a tunic and train or a hood and mask). Apart from its religious character, the Sevillian Holy Week is also known for the artistic quality of the statues atop the 'pasos', the musical bands and the 'saetas', popular songs considered one of the most pure forms of Flamenco and whose lyrics are inspired by Christ's Passion and the suffering of the Virgin Mary.
