The entrance to this water museum is under a cascade of water. Inside there is an artificial jungle with showers, piranhas and mudskippers. The children's favourites are the frogs that almost look like candy in all different colours, and the enormous sharks swimming in the glimmering water. In the 9th Century, Birka was a busy trading metropolis where the Benedictine monk Ansgar was sent by Emperor Frank to convert the Nordic heathens. Guided tours are arranged, which gives you a detailed information on the excavations. You may also get a glimpse of one of the Viking ships, a reconstruction of the ancient seafarers' vessels. If you're a nature lover, this is just the thing for you. At Biskopsö (Bishop's Isle), you can either go for a walk or a boat ride. This part of the archipelago is a nature reserve, and both vegetation and animal life have adapted to the marine environment. Deciduous birch and alder forest, fallow deer and grey seals thrive here. Starting at Norrtull, just north of Odenplan, Brunnsviken bay stretches north to Frescati. This is a true oasis right in the middle of the city environment. As soon as you reach the path by the water, you are transported to the countryside. There's absolutely no sign of any traffic on the nearby motorway. It is green, beautiful and peaceful. To walk all the way around Brunnsviken takes approximately two or three hours. There are quite a few distractions along the way as well - the walk passes by swimming spots, cafés and Bergianska Trädgården's gardens, among other things. Skogskyrkogården (the "Forest Cemetery") is the final resting place of a number of illustrious persons, among them Greta Garbo. The burial ground and chapel are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, and were designed by two of the most eminent architects of the Functionalist movement, Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz. Karlberg palace is beautifully situated by lake Karlberg, and it feels entirely isolated in spite of being located practically in the centre. The palace is used as military barracks today, but if you pass by at night you may see the famous ghost, The White Lady, appear at one of the windows. Långholmen (a small island just outside Södermalm) is perfect for swimming. The island is full of cliffs, jetties, inlets and small bays. There are trees nearby, great for climbing and providing lots of different hiding places. Midsummer's Eve is one of the biggest events of the year in Sweden, a welcome celebration of the summer solstice that dates back to Pagan days. A time of wild partying, locals adorn their houses inside and out with floral garlands and wreaths. Traditional festivities include bonfires, dancing around a decorated midsummer pole, singing folk songs, drinking local varieties spiced grain alcohol, and eating Scandinavian delicacies such as pickled herring. Sweden was brought into the Christian Church a long time ago, but those emissaries from Rome did not manage to root out all of the pagan rituals that had been a way of life for the Nordic populace. Quite a few of them still exist in popular form, Walpurgis Night or Valborgsmässoafton being one of them. On April 30 every year, huge bonfires are lit all over Sweden. And although the attendant choirs sing of welcoming the season of spring, the actual purpose of the fires was to scare off witches, sorcerers and demons and send them back to Blåkulla, their mountain refuge on the European continent. These days, Swedes do see the Walpurgis festivities as a celebration of springtime, but there are many who still remember the more frightening aspects of what these rituals once represented. Stockholm's largest Walpurgis celebration is held at the open-air museum of Skansen every year. Ticket prices start at SEK30 depending on the time of admission.
