Out of a fairytale |
Karlavägen 32 Stockholm 114 31 +46 (0)8 21 5998 |
Humlegården is like something out of a fairytale. Right by Karlavägen is a fenced playground called Humlan, which has an extremely generous staff who don't mind watching the children for a while. In the small cottage, hot coffee is served. They also have three-wheelers, scooters and pedal cars to lend to the children. On Tuesdays, hotdog barbeques are arranged at 11a and 2p. Långholmen Stockholm 102 72 +46 (0)8 720 8500 http://www.langholmen.com info@langholmen.com |
Långholmen (a small island just outside Södermalm) is perfect for swimming. The island is full of cliffs, jetties, inlets and small bays. The beach has a beautiful, shallow jetty with a sandy beach and a lawn. Families with children get together to swim and have picnics on the grass. There are trees nearby, great for climbing and providing lots of different hiding places. Just getting there is like being in an Astrid Lindgren fairytale, passing the quaint houses and beautiful gardens. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Watch the locals catch summer madness |
Various venues Stockholm +46 (0)8 5082 8508 (Tourist Centre) |
Midsummer's Eve is one of the biggest events of the year in Sweden, probably because the locals are so starved for daylight and warmth during the long Scandinavian winter. Granted, this evening in June can be fairly chilly, but Swedes ignore night time temperatures and go all out to celebrate the much longed for summer. The daylight is truly fantastic, more so the farther north you go, night has barely arrived before the sun rises again. The roots of this celebration are the ancient pagan summer solstice rituals, but Midsummer's Eve is still a time of wild celebration. Traditional festivities include eating pickled herring, drinking local varieties of spiced grain alcohol, constructing and raising a May pole, and then dancing and singing around this leafed and garlanded pole. Skansen's open air museum holds a large traditional three day Midsummer's Eve celebration every year, and it is enjoyed by thousands of visitors from near and far. Review © 2007, Wcities |
Swing away |
Rosenlundsparken Stockholm 118 27 +46 (0)8 5082 8508 (Turistbyra) |
The playground behind the tall Tax Authorities building on Södemalm is mostly known for its variety of swings. The playground is manned, and the fenced part is for the youngest ones. There is, however, a lot of space for picnics and the lawn is big enough for playing baseball or a friendly game of football. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An urban water adventure |
Sveavägen 143 Stockholm 11350 +46 (0)8 34 3300 http://www.vanadisbadet.com/ |
Vilda Vanadis is an urban water adventure, a temptress that entices children with blue waterchutes winding down a slope. There are smaller slides for the really small ones, such as a banana-slide and a huge Swiss cheese with holes to crawl around in. If you are going to Vilda Vanadis, you must accept the long queues. Have fun! Review © 2007, Wcities |
Heritage for children |
Katarina bangata Stockholm +46 (0)8 5082 8508 (Turistbyra) |
This playground is something like a children's heritage area, with fantastic views over the Hammarby area. And not only that! Everything a child could ever imagine can be found here: swings, climbing frames and an old tractor to climb and play on. Pigs, hens and sheep live here during the summertime. In the winter, it is fun to ride a sled or ski down the slopes. To get here, take the metro to Slussen, then bus number 46. Review © 2007, Wcities |
