Viking Town |
Björkö Stockholm Sweden +46 (0)8 5605 1445 (Birka Museum) / +46 (0)8 5191 8000 (National Heritage Board) http://www.raa.se/birka birka@raa.se |
In the 9th Century, Birka was a busy trading metropolis where the Benedictine monk Ansgar was sent by Emperor Frank to convert the Nordic heathens. A visit to this island will reveal the ongoing excavations, and you'll be able to explore the recently inaugurated museum. Guided tours are arranged, which gives you a detailed information on the excavations. You may also get a glimpse of one of the Viking ships, a reconstruction of the ancient seafarers' vessels. Nature reserve in the archipelago |
Skarabacken Stockholm Sweden + 46 (0)8 5715 8018 |
If you're a nature lover, this is just the thing for you. At Biskopsö (Bishop's Isle), you can either go for a walk or a boat ride. This part of the archipelago is a nature reserve, and both vegetation and animal life have adapted to the marine environment. Deciduous birch and alder forest, fallow deer and grey seals thrive here. To get to Biskopsö, take buses 433 or 434 from Slussen to Stavsnäs, and then a waterbus out to the island. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Strömgatan Stockholm 11152 Sweden +46 (0)8 5082 8508 (Turistbyra) |
This guided tour is given in an open, wooden boat. The crew also dresses up in costumes. The boat Stegeholm is a real beauty, and when the weather is good, the tour is even better. Stegeholm sails past different parts of Stockholm and the guides narrate the history of the city in Swedish and in English. The tours operate daily in the summer from Strömkajen and Stadshusbron and tickets cost SEK110. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Archipelago cruise |
Skeppsbron 22 Stockholm 11130 Sweden +46 (0)8 5871 4000 http://www.strommakanalbolaget... bokning@stromma.se |
This day cruise on the century-old M/S Waxholm III has become a great success. If it's sunny, you'll get a nice tan. Known as the Thousand Island Cruise, it is no exaggeration. The Stockholm archipelago consists of more than 24,000 islands, and no visit to the city is complete without a trip to the numerous islands. It would actually take a lot more than a day's cruise to see the entire archipelago, but the cruise makes quite a few interesting stops. In addition to the magnificent view of the beautiful archipelago, you can also enjoy excellent food and beverages onboard. Tours are conducted in Swedish and English. Review © 2007, Wcities |
