Some coffee and conversation
Sveavägen 98
Stockholm 113 50
+46 (0)8 15 7445
This is a good place for coffee or lunch in spite of its location on a busy street. The furnishings are simple, with light pine, metal and white paint. The seating area is quite spacious. Coffee, tea, fresh juice, pies and salads are served here. There are also lots of different international magazines for your perusal. Or you could sit by the window and watch the world rush by. By the way, the name refers to the area's postal code.

This cafe boasts of excellent service and a friendly atmosphere. The decor reminds one of the the 1950s, given the James Dean posters on the walls. A regular café menu is offered, with brunch on Sundays. The area in which it is located, Eastern Södermalm used to be a calm area with a limited number of dining and drinking places. However, now there are coffee shops and restaurants all over the neighborhood and this cafe is among the better bets.

Bagpiper's Inn

The jolly Scotsman
Rörstrandsgatan 21
Stockholm 113 40
+46 (0)8 31 1855
This is one of many English pubs in town, but the Bagpiper's Inn never seems to lose its old world charm. Between its next-door neighbours the Boomerang Hotel and The Bald Eagle, Bagpiper's is always the busiest place. The inside is done up in a Scottish theme. You can try a large selection of beer and have the pleasure of being served by kilt—clad male waiters. The clientele consists of people of all kinds — young and old, people in jeans and suits, both sober and drunk. A lot of people drop in for a quick drink after work. The menu consists of the standard pub selection, with burgers and fish and chips. Servings are large, and worth the money. Here you can also treat yourself to the classic bacon—and—egg brunch on Sundays.

Lebanese Cuisine
Engelbrektsgatan 37
Stockholm 114 32
+46 (0)8 21 2025
http://www.beirutcafe.se/
info@beirutcafe.se
There aren't too many Lebanese restaurants around Stockholm. The ambience is soothing, with lamps and a beautiful indoor waterfall. Bright coloured cloths give this place an exotic look. Eastern tradition suggests that many small dishes called 'Meze' form a larger plate. As portions in the main course are large, feel free to adapt the Meze Method. The cafe is unique in its selection of music, which has elements of oriental, balearic and lounge music. To sum it up, the place has a great feel to it and the food is delicious.

Bellisimo Café

Café and lunch place
Odengatan 85
Stockholm 113 22

This is one of the many cafés and lunch places in the area around Odenplan. Bellisimo does not seem to be based on any particular concept, but the food here is nice and fresh in general. The joint serves various lunch dishes, such as lasagna and salads and has a regular coffee menu. Eating here is a nice way to prove that simple food need not be tasteless or unimpressive.

Big Ben

A noisy night out
Folkungagatan 97
Stockholm 116 30
+46 (0)8 641 4044

Big Ben tries to be a true blue British bar. It's the home pub of Hammarby's fans, and a common meeting place before a big match. A high decibel sound is assured at all times but it can get plain intolerable when there is a live match on. The first floor is decorated in true pub style while the second is more like a relaxing lounge.

Black Horse Inn

Cosy pub, miscellaneous patrons

Stockholm, Svealand
+1 46 08 64 31 616
Hosting a crowd of down-on-their-luck poets, young twenty-somethings, and worn out young parents, you will find one of the best pubs in in the city. A great place for out-of-work romantics to hang out with locals and drink and smoke their lives away while waiting for the end of the world. With a selective and unusual list of beers on tap and not much in terms of hard liquor or food, this is a true pub's pub. With terrible wallpaper, a short bar, and dirty stools to sit on, this is a funky Bohemian joint.

Ah, Carmen is legendary! She is the very definition of a tavern, with inexpensive food, cheap drinks and an atmosphere that encourages conversation. She may not be a beauty from the outside, being a little rough and a little tacky, but Carmen is a real pearl. If you want to know where all the youngsters, artists, rockers and eccentrics of Stockholm go, this place is your answer. Pizza dominates the menu but beer seems to be the bestseller in the house.

The restaurant couldn't have a better name—Chakula means "food" in Swahili. Partake of delicious African cuisine—an African Passion cocktail with hot samosas for starters and grilled red snapper in a spicy sauce with Cape Malay Curry for mains, among other, equally mouth-watering options. A fruit pudding with a steaming mug of cappuccino adds the finishing touch. While the food entices the taste-buds and fills the belly, the prices don't burn too big a hole in the wallet. It's no wonder the joint is favored by one and all!

Here, the exotic meets the trendy. At Halv Grek Plus Turk, which literally means "a half-Greek and a Turk", the outcome is an exciting mix of the modern and the traditional. The eastern part of the Mediterranean is noticeable in both the decor and the food. Reservation is required. Check out the beautifully designed bar.

Hard Rock Café has a restaurant in almost every major city of the world. This Stockholm outlet follows the chain's concept of hearty American food on the menu, and rock 'n' roll memorabilia on the walls. Customers can enjoy live performances during the evening. The Sunday brunch is good value-for-money and very popular, and there's plenty options in the place that will keep kids happy. Don't forget to buy a mug, T-shirt, or a Fender pin with the Hard Rock Café logo from the souvenir shop on your way out.

This restaurant is named after a traveller and vagabond who is said to have collected items during his journeys and hidden them in a warehouse in Southampton. Maybe it is a true story, who knows? Anyway, his collection is now found here, at Harry B James. Grilled and fried are keywords here, together with Tex-Mex staples like guacamole, salsa and grilled corn on the cob. The atmosphere is definitely American.

Hemma hos Julia is best known for their homemade, fresh cheese. This started as an experiment at someone's home, in the bathtub. Nowadays, the cheese is sold in lovely little boxes in several delis all over town, as well as at this café. Julia serves light meals, such as salads, sandwiches, soups, and sweet delights like brownies and carrot cake, to go with your coffee. There are wooden tables and chairs, and the place seems very welcoming.

This place at Linnégatan 18 is a new and welcome addition to the Stockholm nightlife. The enormous and open premises are smartly and sparsely decorated. One floor is a huge dining hall with room for over 200 guests. On the ground floor is a large bar and the mezzanine level is home to a comfy lounge. The décor is pop-artsy and slightly 1960s-style. The noteworthy seafood bar is run in co-operation with Melanders Fisk in Östermalmshallen. Fish, meats and a variety of ingredients are available at this deli for those who'd like a quick bite as well as take something back home for the folks. The ready-to-eat food includes Asian rice, Italian pastas and a local range of non-vegetarian dishes. Make sure you take along a friend who has assimilated at least a smattering of Swedish, so as not to be lost amid the tongue-twisting names on the menu. However difficult the communication might get, a meal here is worth the effort. Dig into some exotic cuisine, involving fish fresh from the sea, or sink your teeth into some marinated red meats. More beef than chicken is found here, as it provides good insulation against the biting cold.

This is one of the finest restaurants in Stockholm. The walls are decorated with Malaysian and Indonesian items, such as shadow puppets and musical instruments, and the abundance of plants and flowers create a tropical atmosphere. The food is traditional Malaysian fare—rich coconut sauces, a variety of curries, vegetable dishes, Satay with peanut sauce, and Roti Canai (a flat bread eaten with curry). The desserts are more or less authentic and there is also a range of fresh fruit juices to choose from. This is an ideal place to enjoy the full spectrum of what Malaysian cuisine has to offer.
