Engelbrektsgatan 37 Stockholm 114 32 Sweden +46 (0)8 21 2025 http://www.beirutcafe.se/ info@beirutcafe.se |
There aren't too many Lebanese restaurants around Stockholm. The ambience is soothing, with warm, hazy lamps and a beautiful indoor waterfall. Bright colored cloths give this place an exotic look. Eastern tradition suggests that many small dishes called 'Meze' form a larger plate. As portions in the main course are large, feel free to adapt the Meze Method. The cafe is unique in its selection of music, which has elements of oriental, balearic and lounge music. To sum it up, the place has a great feel to it and the food is delicious. In the Karlaplan neighbourhood, there are surprisingly only a few restaurants that are worth a visit. The Cuckoo is one of them. It is a comfortable restaurant, with a bar. If you are lucky, the fluffy cushion seats next to the window will not be occupied. It's done up in a decor that is very common to New York restaurants. It's stylishly decorated, with its high ceiling and walls covered in black-and-white photos of movie stars. Everyone is welcome at the Cuckoo, including children and dogs. Edo on Östermalm is a smart, sparsely decorated and purely Japanese restaurant. The food is freshly prepared which probably explains why the waiting time is so long. The sushi served here is delicious, reasonably prices and well worth the wait. This is a very quiet place and one can easily overhear the conversations of other people. It is, therefore, wise not to hold business meetings here or to discuss your business or other secrets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Authentic jazz bar |

Like an oasis in the middle of the city, between the bustling streets of Malmskillnadsgatan och Regeringsgatan, Glenn Miller Café has been a haven for jazz—lovers ever since. Without changing the style or altering the décor, this place has managed to stay popular for generations. On certain nights, live jazz is played by high—brow bands. Mostly, jazz lovers bring their own favourite jazz records to play on vinyl, of course. They would consider CD—players an insult. The venue is very small but extremely pleasant. The walls are covered with jazz photos and instruments. The food is mainly American. On the menu are burgers and steaks, but also more original and innovative crossover—style meals. Fish, meats and a variety of ingredients are available at this deli for those who'd like a quick bite as well as take something back home for the folks. The ready-to-eat food includes Asian rice, Italian pastas and a local range of non-vegetarian dishes. Make sure you take along a friend who has assimilated at least a smattering of Swedish, so as not to be lost amid the tongue-twisting names on the menu. However difficult the communication might get, a meal here is worth the effort. Dig into some exotic cuisine, involving fish fresh from the sea, or sink your teeth into some marinated red meats. More beef than chicken is found here, as it provides good insulation against the biting cold. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Those with a delicate palate beware—spicy Thai food is what you will get here. Het Basilika Noodles, Forest Curry, Phad Khimao Talay and other exotic-sounding dishes line the menu. If you are a newbie, stick to the chicken; you cannot go wrong. A few subtly-spiced names pop-up as well; anything preceded with "sweet-and-sour" should go easy on the taste-buds. A shot of strong Thai whiskey normally sets the mood before you start, while a leisurely ice-tea with ice-cream should cool things off afterwards. If you cannot get over the place yet, stroll through the adjoining spa; you might just be tempted to get some body pampering. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant but expensive |
Kommendörsgatan 40 Stockholm 114 58 Sweden +46 (0)8 663 6868 http://www.samurai.nu/ info@samurai.nu |
Samurai's interiors are traditionally Japanese with exotic curios and silk furnishings. The high quality food served is made from choice ingredients, some even imported from Japan. The prices are a bit high, but the excellent sushi and the delicious tempura are worth the money. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hötorget is an area locally known as Stockholm's Chinatown. Almost back-to back, you'll find Sawadee Buffet House, Sawadee Fast Food, and Sawadee restaurant. All three serve Thai fare but the original restaurant is Sawadee. Though more expensive, it has the best authentic food and ambience. The place is tastefully done up in a typical Thai style. Remarkable little bar |
Nybrogatan 1 Stockholm 114 34 Sweden +46 (0)8 611 0021 |
The trendy Soap Bar is remarkable in many ways. There no real tables here; instead the place has large desks. The guests stand out as containing remarkably chic, successful young people. The menu choices are limited but the portions are large and delicious. Sandwiches, salads and soups are the kinds of light meals you get here. But the atmosphere and service are great and you are likely to revisit this place quite often. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Chair restaurant |
Sibyllegatan 47 Stockholm 114 42 Sweden +46 (0)8 663 9613 |
Initially when Stolen was opened, the idea was to ask all the guests to bring a chair of their own. Many guests did, but forgot to take them back. Consequently, there are a lot of chairs here. The old rule has been abolished and now this is just a good place for a quiet meal. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Swedish-French brasserie tradition |
Stureplan 2 Stockholm 111 37 Sweden +46 (0)8 440 5730 http://www.sturehof.com info@sturehof.com |
Like an unexplored castle with flights of stairs leading to strange rooms and floors, Sturehof has 'Adventure' written all over it. Three floors offer three different bars and atmospheres. The most crowded and best known of them is the O-bar on the top floor, which is slightly noisy but full of charm. The music differs between the floors and the rooms, so go and explore to find your favorite. The wine-list offers a delicious assortment of European wines, and the restaurant itself specializes in seafood dishes. If you're a night owl, this is the place for you, as they keep their kitchen open till 1a. Review © 2007, Wcities |

S:t eriksgatan 70 Stockholm 113 20 Sweden +46 (0)8 32 6131 |
This is a small, modern sandwich and coffee shop. It is the kind of place where you do not sit down for long but rather grab a sandwich on the run. The variety of sandwiches and subs on the menu is fairly large. You can choose one of Substop's specialities or compose your own. So if you need to grab some morsels in a hurry, rush here, grab your food and rush back Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tasty miso soup, sushi and sashimi |
Brahegatan 3 Stockholm 114 37 Sweden +46 (0)8 663 4546 |
If you take a walk in Humlegården during lunchtime on a warm summer's day you will come across someone sitting on a park bench, enjoying a Japanese lunch. They will most probably have bought it one block away, at Sushihuset. During colder weather or in the evenings, it might be more pleasant to sit in the small but tastefully decorated restaurant instead of ordering it and eating in the park. While sipping at your miso soup you can study the chef as he skilfully slices and arranges the sashimi and sushi. The ingredients are high-quality and the food is delicious. Come here and you are likely to gain a new appreciation for Japanese cuisine. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Here, everyday is a Friday. You will see serious drinkers, families, and professionals here. The interiors are loud, and have been done up in a typical American decor with cowboy hats and movie posters. The menu includes good options in club sandwiches, hamburgers and steaks. The place occasionally puts up magic shows to entertain the children. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elite dining destination |
Birger Jarlsgatan 29 Stockholm 10395 Sweden +46 (0)8 21 6169 http://www.vassaeggen.com/ |
Sitting pretty on the ground-floor of the Elite Hotel Stockholm Plaza, and having featured in the Gourmet magazine, this classy joint sees patrons from the cream of society sashaying in for a pleasant meal before heading over to the adjoining nightclub. The restaurant prides itself on its Oxtail Tortellini topped with creamy Mascarpone cheese, while patrons have other selections to rave about. Start with the hearty Melon Soup, served with chunks of Serrano ham; followed up with a crispy-fried herring in a thick potato purée. A main course of Duck Terrine and a sherry-drenched truffle polenta vies with the equally competent char in lobster juice. Leafy garnishes add the health factor to the dishes, only to be nullified by the sinful desserts and sorbets. Seasonal menus feature local specialties of sausages and puddings; make sure you get a bite of those! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Simply done up and with large windows, this place has its share of loyal customers. A nice selection of coffees and fresh bagels is on the menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |
