Ulriksdals palace was originally called Jacobsdal after Jacob de la Gardie, for whom the palace was built in the 1640s. Originally built in Renaissance style, it has been transformed several times, by Nicodemus Tessin. Queen Hedvig Eleonora purchased the palace in 1684, and gifted it to her newborn grandson, Prince Ulrik, after which it was renamed Ulriksdal. For over two decades the palace was used as a hospital, but became a royal residence again for Crown Prince Karl and Crown Princess Lovisa. The famous 1923 living room with furniture designed by Carl Malmsten is one of the finest Swedish twentieth-century interiors. The Orangerie, dating from the late seventeenth century, is now a museum for sculpture. Under King Adolf Fredrik and Queen Lovisa Ulrika the old riding school was turned into a theatre, which was very popular during summer.
