The Archibald Prize for portraiture, was first awarded in 1921 at the bequest of Jules Francois Archibald, who sought to support local artists and immortalise the memory of great Australians. Past winners include the late Brett Whiteley, and subjects have ranged from bush poet 'Banjo' Patterson to modern icons such as former Prime Minister Paul Keating. There is also a People's Choice Award, and the coveted Packing Room Prize, awarded by the burly blokes who unpack and hang the entries. Movie showings, talks and an exhibition runs March through May. Bondi Beach is where homesick Brits, together with the rest of Sydney's perpetual backpacker community, congregate to celebrate Christmas with sand and surf replacing snow, sleet and shivering temperatures. Each Christmas Day, Bondi turns itself over for a giant party complete with bands and entertainment. 'Bring your own' bucket and spade, but watch the alcohol. When the starter's gun goes off, 50,000 runners head for Bondi Beach on this 14 kilometre fun run. Runners are split into three groups: the serious professionals, the semi-serious who actually train for the event, and the "back of the pack" walkers and on-the-day entrants. Despite the crowds of fellow runners and some killer hills, the run takes a scenic route from College Street in the CBD through the leafy eastern suburbs and is something of a Sydney institution. This mega festival could easily be called the Taste of Glebe considering it is all about food. It takes place on Glebe Point Road, one of Sydney's longest dining strips. There are restaurants lining the road shoulder to shoulder and once a year they take the cuisines to the streets for masses (more than 100,000) to sample. Add some arts and crafts, decorate the street a bit, throw in a few rides, have some buskers and clowns entertain the crowds and you have a genuine festival. Sydney loves its fireworks and this is when they are at their best, launched from barges in the centre of the harbour and fixtures across the skyline. There are two sets: one at 9pm for families, and another to ring in the New Year. Best views are undoubtedly from the harbour, but there are many other vantage points. Some of the more out-of-the-way spots include Milsons Point and McMahons Point. Many other activities take place throughout the evening including a tall ships parade and a carnival. For over 160 years, this all-weather track has played host to many a champion thoroughbred. The course hosts major races during the Autumn and Spring Racing Carnivals. Randwick is a roomy track with sweeping bends and the famous 'rise' on the home straight to really test the horses' mettle. Held at the end of Winter every year, this dance party of untold proportions is the place to get down, get dirty and dance the night away. Organised by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Committee, thousands of gay and straight party-goers beg, borrow and all but steal tickets--to say they are in demand is an understatement. This open-air cinema is an unforgettable way to experience the great outdoors, catch a movie, and see some dazzling cityscape views. Situated in the Royal Botanic Gardens and overlooking some of Sydney's top sights, it is the perfect place to spend a summer evening. Films begin at sunset on a large screen that rises from the harbour, seemingly out of the water. Films range from general releases to cult classics to family favourites. The Fringe Fest is an underground alternative to the more mainstream Sydney Festival. It is a bit like the tattooed and mohawk wearing wild younger sibling of the more sophisticated tux-clad older festival. But it is pure fun and filled with such oddities as drag racing, sand castle competitions and the now defunct, but popular in memory, nude surfing challenge. It also features more familiar and inexpensive features like comedy and dance performances and film screenings at venues across the inner city. The Swans were involved in the first step of transforming the Victorian Football League (VFL) into the Australian Football League (AFL) back in 1982. World's Largest Short Film Festival |

Entry is open to all takers and each seven minute film must include a TS - Tropfest Signature Item - to demonstrate that the film was made specifically for the festival. Greyhound racing has been run here since 1932, when the Trust permitted the 'Tin Hare Association' to conduct regular races.
