In memory of war veterans |
Various locations Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia +61 02 9255 1788 |
Beginning with the haunting notes of a bugle playing 'The Last Post' at dawn services across Sydney, Anzac Day is a time when Australia stops and reflects on the service of Australia and New Zealand Army Corps troops. This public holiday (most shops are shut) is commemorated on the day itself, the main event being the parade beginning in George Street, in which returned servicemen and their relatives march in uniform before thousands of Sydneysiders who turn out rain, hail or shine to pay their respects. Award-giving ceremonies such as Australian of the Year and Young Australian of the Year are also a traditional part of the day. Australia Day is a public holiday, though many shops are open. At this event, hosted by the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, Australia's longest serving HIV/AIDS charity, people turn up wearing red scarfs and have a picnic together at an outdoor venue. In case it rains, the alternative venue is the organiser's office. The red scarf symbolises an extension of the red ribbon concept, wherein patients were supported emotionally. Yuletide fun in the sun |
Campbell Parade (Bondi Beach) Sydney, NSW 2026 Australia +61 2 9130 5311 (Bondi Visitors Information Centre) |
Bondi Beach is where homesick Brits, together with the rest of Sydney's perpetual backpacker community, congregate to celebrate Christmas with sand and surf replacing snow, sleet and shivering temperatures. Each Christmas Day, Bondi turns itself over for a giant party complete with bands and entertainment. 'Bring your own' bucket and spade, but watch the alcohol. Due to problems in the past with rioting, since cleaned up by strong policing, most of the area is now a dry zone. Review © 2007, Wcities |

When the starter's gun goes off, 50,000 runners head for Bondi Beach on this 14 kilometre fun run. Runners are split into three groups: the serious professionals, the semi-serious who actually train for the event, and the "back of the pack" walkers and on-the-day entrants. Despite the crowds of fellow runners and some killer hills, the run takes a scenic route from College Street in the CBD through the leafy eastern suburbs and is something of a Sydney institution. It sounds bizarre--ferries decked-out in lavish fancy dress, to say nothing of their champagne-imbibed passengers--but the Ferrython has become an absolute institution in Sydney. Every Australia Day ferries compete in this race, with other harbour craft also making a splashy appearance. Line honours are not important; elaborate decorations and a good laugh are. This mega festival could easily be called the Taste of Glebe considering it is all about food. It takes place on Glebe Point Road, one of Sydney's longest dining strips. There are restaurants lining the road shoulder to shoulder and once a year they take the cuisines to the streets for masses (more than 100,000) to sample. Add some arts and crafts, decorate the street a bit, throw in a few rides, have some buskers and clowns entertain the crowds and you have a genuine festival. Cuisine samples include Malaysian, Greek, Japanese, Lebanese, Italian and a ton of Thai. Wine sampling is also a big hit. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Art for alternative sake |
Office: Queen Elizabeth Drive (Events take place at various locations) Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia +61 (0)2 9365 0112 |
The Fringe Fest is an underground alternative to the more mainstream Sydney Festival. It is a bit like the tattooed and mohawk wearing wild younger sibling of the more sophisticated tux-clad older festival. But it is pure fun and filled with such oddities as drag racing, sand castle competitions and the now defunct, but popular in memory, nude surfing challenge. It also features more familiar and inexpensive features like comedy and dance performances and film screenings at venues across the inner city. Free street theatre shows and concerts take place every day during the festival. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Colourful & Risqué Festival |
College St (Parade start) (events take place at various locations) Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia +61 2 9568 8600 http://www.mardigras.org.au/ |
Forget Gay Paris - Gay Sydney is where it is at. Including an arts program of film, visual art, literature and performance, the festival's launch on the Opera House forecourt and the Fair Day in Victoria Park are just a few of the big draw cards each year. The main event is the parade on the final Saturday, when 8,000 glam, gorgeous and near naked bronzed bodies parade on floats through the streets of Sydney. See website for complete yearly details. The Swans were involved in the first step of transforming the Victorian Football League (VFL) into the Australian Football League (AFL) back in 1982. It was then that the cash strapped South Melbourne Football Club decided its options lay north of the Victorian border in Australia's biggest city. Although the club languished in the doldrums for several years, the turnaround came in 1996, when Tony Lockett, the gargantuan goal kicker from St Kilda, joined the team. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Christmas celebrations in July |
Various Venues (Blue Mountains) Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia http://www.bluemts.com.au/yule... |
Christmas in Sydney can be a scorcher, so Australians reckon that to experience the kind of Christmas they see on Christmas cards and on television, there is only one thing to do - celebrate it again in June, July and August. Throughout the Blue Mountains, guesthouses, pubs, hotels and resorts offer special Yulefest packages that include all the Christmas trimmings. One of the longest-running and most popular destinations is the magnificent 1920s-built Jenolan Caves House. Review © 2007, Wcities |
