In memory of war veterans |
Various locations Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia +61 02 9255 1788 |
Beginning with the haunting notes of a bugle playing 'The Last Post' at dawn services across Sydney, Anzac Day is a time when Australia stops and reflects on the service of Australia and New Zealand Army Corps troops. This public holiday (most shops are shut) is commemorated on the day itself, the main event being the parade beginning in George Street, in which returned servicemen and their relatives march in uniform before thousands of Sydneysiders who turn out rain, hail or shine to pay their respects. Celebrate the arrival of the First Fleet |
Various locations Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia +61 2 6120 0600 http://www.australiaday.gov.au info@australiaday.gov.au |
Commemorating the arrival the First Fleet at Sydney Cove on 26th January 1788, celebrations include the Australia Day Parade through the city streets and a concert, usually held in the Domain, featuring Australian artists and musicians. Award-giving ceremonies such as Australian of the Year and Young Australian of the Year are also a traditional part of the day. Australia Day is a public holiday, though many shops are open. It is always celebrated on the day itself rather than as part of a long weekend. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The other new year celebration |
Dixon Street (Chinatown) Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia +61 (0)2 9265 9333 http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.go... |
Where else but the colourful chaos of Chinatown to herald the Chinese New Year? Complete with a street parade of dazzling lanterns and drums driving evil spirits away, this two day festival marks the beginning of Sydney's Chinese community's fifteen-day celebration, which starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year. Do not miss the annual Dragon Boat Races held at Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour, when up to 100 crews compete for five cups. Review © 2007, Wcities |

All the fun of the fair and a taste fest |
Glebe Point Rd & St. Johns Rd (between Parramatta Rd & Bridge Rd) Sydney, NSW 2037 Australia +61 (0)2 9281 0024 http://www.epicattractions.com... gsf@epicattractions.com |
This mega festival could easily be called the Taste of Glebe considering it is all about food. It takes place on Glebe Point Road, one of Sydney's longest dining strips. There are restaurants lining the road shoulder to shoulder and once a year they take the cuisines to the streets for masses (more than 100,000) to sample. Add some arts and crafts, decorate the street a bit, throw in a few rides, have some buskers and clowns entertain the crowds and you have a genuine festival. Cuisine samples include Malaysian, Greek, Japanese, Lebanese, Italian and a ton of Thai. Wine sampling is also a big hit. Review © 2007, Wcities |

June 3 marks the anniversary of the High Court of Australia's judgement in the 1992 recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the original inhabitants of the continent.
