The Archibald Prize for portraiture, was first awarded in 1921 at the bequest of Jules Francois Archibald, who sought to support local artists and immortalise the memory of great Australians. Past winners include the late Brett Whiteley, and subjects have ranged from bush poet 'Banjo' Patterson to modern icons such as former Prime Minister Paul Keating. There is also a People's Choice Award, and the coveted Packing Room Prize, awarded by the burly blokes who unpack and hang the entries. Movie showings, talks and an exhibition runs March through May.

A chance to see the raw talent of Australia's young artists, Artexpress is an annual exhibition of works created for the rigorous HSC (Year 12 students) examination in Visual Arts. The works chosen for inclusion represent the finest in the state across a diverse range of styles and media, including painting, sculpture, graphics, computer-generated work and photography. Artexpress is a joint initiative of the Board of Studies New South Wales, the New South Wales Department of Education and Training and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Check it out February through April.

The Sydney Royal Easter Show is the largest annual event in Australia, offering better-than-ever value, with 12 hours of non-stop action every day for 14 days.
