In memory of war veterans |
Various locations Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia +61 02 9255 1788 |
Beginning with the haunting notes of a bugle playing 'The Last Post' at dawn services across Sydney, Anzac Day is a time when Australia stops and reflects on the service of Australia and New Zealand Army Corps troops. This public holiday (most shops are shut) is commemorated on the day itself, the main event being the parade beginning in George Street, in which returned servicemen and their relatives march in uniform before thousands of Sydneysiders who turn out rain, hail or shine to pay their respects. Commemorating the arrival the First Fleet at Sydney Cove on 26th January 1788, celebrations include the Australia Day Parade through the city streets and a concert, usually held in the Domain, featuring Australian artists and musicians. Award-giving ceremonies such as Australian of the Year and Young Australian of the Year are also a traditional part of the day. Australia Day is a public holiday, though many shops are open. It is always celebrated on the day itself rather than as part of a long weekend. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A day at the races |
Sydney Harbour Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia +61 (0)2 8248 6500 |
It sounds bizarre--ferries decked-out in lavish fancy dress, to say nothing of their champagne-imbibed passengers--but the Ferrython has become an absolute institution in Sydney. Every Australia Day ferries compete in this race, with other harbour craft also making a splashy appearance. Line honours are not important; elaborate decorations and a good laugh are. You can watch the Ferrython from the usual harbour-side vantage points: Circular Quay, The Rocks, Mrs Macquarie's Chair, Milsons Point and McMahons Point. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Glebe Point Rd & St. Johns Rd (between Parramatta Rd & Bridge Rd) Sydney, NSW 2037 Australia +61 (0)2 9281 0024 http://www.epicattractions.com... |
This mega festival could easily be called the Taste of Glebe considering it is all about food. It takes place on Glebe Point Road, one of Sydney's longest dining strips. There are restaurants lining the road shoulder to shoulder and once a year they take the cuisines to the streets for masses (more than 100,000) to sample. Add some arts and crafts, decorate the street a bit, throw in a few rides, have some buskers and clowns entertain the crowds and you have a genuine festival. Cuisine samples include Malaysian, Greek, Japanese, Lebanese, Italian and a ton of Thai. Wine sampling is also a big hit. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Sydney loves its fireworks and this is when they are at their best, launched from barges in the centre of the harbour and fixtures across the skyline. There are two sets: one at 9pm for families, and another to ring in the New Year. Best views are undoubtedly from the harbour, but there are many other vantage points. Some of the more out-of-the-way spots include Milsons Point and McMahons Point. Many other activities take place throughout the evening including a tall ships parade and a carnival. Public transport operates continuously through the night. Review © 2007, Wcities |
