The mood is old fashioned and the cocktail are shaken, stirred and decorated to perfection. An unforgettable experience, you will share it with well-heeled tourists and locals indulging in a bit of the luxurious.

A fairly new, gay venue, beginning to make its mark on Sydney's clubbers as a location with the lot. Within the complex are a club, a bar, a wine bar, an oyster bar, a cocktail bar and a restaurant. The nightclub area houses two dance floor areas so there is plenty of room to get sweaty in! There are also Drag shows, a function area and a weekly Monday recovery party. Different levels mean different music vibes are on offer throughout the night. Popular with gay and straight, you get all sorts here.

Tucked away in Surry Hills this bar is part of the Carrington Hotel but its entrance is located on Arthur Street. Virtually every night you can catch a drag queen performance. Do not be surprised if the people you danced with on a Saturday night are still rocking on in Annie's Bar on a Monday. Chances are if the bars your scene, the pub in the hotel is not. The décor is very 1980s and the bar is very like a den.

What a location to relax and enjoy the expansive views over Circular Quay Sydney Harbour Bridge. In warm weather, this bar has outdoor seating overlooking the harbour and serves cocktails and delicious snacks like pizza, antipasti and pasta. The décor is slick and minimalist and the clientele locals and tourists. The very popular Aqua Luna restaurant next door is a fine dining experience. Utilising home-grown organic produce and local and overseas chef stars, the food is contemporary Australian, with a dash of seafood and accessorised by a great cellar of premium Australian and Italian wines.

Located in Argyle Stores Argyle is a five-bar lounge in the oldest part of the city. The 18th century architecture lends a certain charm to this place that is as big as a boutique hotel. With space not being a constraint, the seating is spacious and comfortable. Muted lights, wooden rafters, huge pillars and glass urns make up the interiors. You are spoiled for choice between the 'Lava Bar,' 'The Perch,' 'The Lounge,' or 'Courtyard'. The staff is extremely friendly and this place is a must-visit for its ambiance, food, and margaritas.

As relaxed and un-threatening as it gets in Bondi this place packs with locals who come to relax and unwind. A wide variety of non-offensive live bands play almost every night. The bar itself claims to be a wine bar, but all in all stocks a good list of alcoholic beverages and around 20 wines by the glass, selling some of the cheapest drinks in Bondi. While you are there, have a glass of their famous Sangria. The decor is basic but clean and comfortable.

Set in the shady grounds of St Andrews Church, the stalls mirror the eclectic and arty local inhabitants. There is a good selection for general gift buying, browsing and second hand goods. This is not the place for up and coming dress designers, but there is a wonderful selection of old cocktail dresses, shoes and hats. Also good jewelery, including antiques, interesting home wares and expensive organic fruit and vegetables is accessible. Watch out around Christmas because it gets busy and crowded. Wander up to the church when you are hungry and peruse the united nations of food stands inside.

Renovated in 1997, this establishment has really undergone a transformation from grungy, lout pub to a sleek and sophisticate drinking and dining experience. The restaurant and bar occupy separate areas, the pub attracting beer drinking patrons, often before or after a match at the football and cricket stadiums across the road. The restaurant has quickly obtained a reputation as a foodies paradise, serving French Mediterranean cuisine such as roast skate or char grilled sirloin. With a good selection of alcohol in both the restaurant and pub area you will find your niche here.

In the basement of the Taylor Square Hotel this space attracts a predominately gay male mid 20s crowd. With two main bar areas, the first a pool room bar, open every night offering pool competitions on a Wednesday evening. The other bar, the Dungeon Bar gets it on from Thursday. Its recovery equivalent is its roast dinner on a Sunday. Happy hour is daily until 8pm. Not the place if you are the shy, retiring type and girls, it is best to stay away.

One of the country's foremost clubs for jazz, acoustic, folk, funk, blues, world and soul live music, this place was renovated and re-launched in 1992 with an adventurous regular line-up of local and international musicians. There are cabaret-style tables close to the stage or an elevated bar at the back. It has functional decor, with wood panelling and unattractive carpeting. If you are not looking for live music there is an admission-free bar and Mediterranean style bistro serving snacks and supper. Weekdays 4:30p-6:30p is happy hour so it is popular for after-work drinks. Performances are held 9:30p onwards.

Bourke Street with its Gothic-Victorian structures has an uncanny resemblance to the city of New Orleans. And to add to that is this restaurant where Chef Steven Neumann prepares authentic Cajun and Creole dishes. The restaurant smells of fresh spices and herbs. Unique ingredients are used in preparing these mouthwatering dishes. A good range of beer, spirits and wine are also served. Transparent chairs, tables covered with crisp yellow linen, glass exterior walls, and printed rugs form the interiors. Lots of expats come here. Make sure you reach early on weekends.

To the mostly local patrons the hotel in which this restaurant is nestled, is known as the Regis (once its old name). Within the hotel there is a betting area, pool hall, pokies and No Names—a very cheap pasta restaurant. There are also three bar areas. The ground floor bar is filled with casually dressed locals. Upstairs it is a lot trendier and younger: the upmarket rear bar often has jazz bands playing, and the other bar is filled with pool tables and contemporary bands or DJ's playing mostly hip hop.

This place hardly ever seems to close. Its specialty is its Monday Morning recovery party. The club inside is called the Discovery, and on some mornings the patronage and High NRG house music spill out into the streets. Earlier on in the night drinks are cheaper but overall they are priced quite well. The clientele are hardened clubbers who are not afraid of a little sweat—if it gets too sticky they just strip off and reveal their muscular, tattooed chests.

Where did this pub get its name? In the 1940s, owner Billy looked like a pig, ate and drank like a pig, and treated his customers like pigs. Times have changed somewhat in this bustling local, which is popular with families, backpackers and office workers. The décor is clean and warm and there is a leafy courtyard which is great on summer evenings. Blueberries is a microcosm of North Sydney itself--office, eighties-style architecture, lots of suits, conservative at lunch time, wild after those après-work cocktails have kicked in, and the back dance floor area transforms into a strobe-lit nightclub. This is one of the latest closers in the area. Tables surround the centre bar and big, comfy booths line the walls--the perfect spot for a power-lunch or sharing a cosy cocktail. Food choices include New York-style Wedges and Sour Cream, Nachos, Pastas and Seared Sirloins. Daiquiris are a perennial favourite. Blueberries also does a decent Bloody Mary.

City Extra has survived the recent re-construction of the Quay and is still open 24 hours a day, seven days a week -good news for loyal patrons who have been coming here since their heady halcyon days of dancing the night away at the clubs and pubs in and around the CBD and The Rocks. Some things never change. This is a scene out of Breakfast at Tiffany's; glamour girls and boys dressed in their finery, tucking into coffee and a Danish as dawn breaks over Sydney's deserted streets. Newly coupled couples cosy up in the big, comfy booths, and tourists clamour for the outdoor Quay-side tables. The upstairs section is often closed but offers one of the best views of the harbour and bridge. The newsprint-style menu has not changed but the prices have rationalised - standard nachos, gourmet burger or pasta meal will set you back around AUD10-AUD15. The quality has definitely improved and the service is fast and friendly no matter the hour.

Located at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, this bar, lounge and restaurant has a lot to it. It is one of the best night spots in the eastern suburbs, where you can relax with a panoramic view of the ocean. The food is modern Australian with mouth watering entrees, such as Honey Five Spice Chicken and Pacific Oysters on offer. For the main course, go for the Grilled Chilli Garlic Prawns and Sefood Ragout with Smoked Paprika. The seafood really matches the view. Enjoy your favorite wine from the elaborate wine list. With so much to choose from, chances are that you might not want to go home!

Arguably Sydney's most popular venue with a massive capacity of 1500. UN has been around since the early 90s and still packs them in. Generally it attracts a mixed crowd of gay and straight, loads of silicon, muscles and tight clothes. Gay night is on Thursdays when Drag Shows come on around 2a. It does not have the cheapest cover charges in Sydney and the drinks are priced to match. It is a club full of committed clubbers dancing to fast pumping house music.

Darlinghurst
Sydney, NSW 2010

The Darlo Bar is the only Bar in the Royal Sovereign Hotel. Patrons (mostly Darlinghurst locals) sink comfortably into the lounges surrounded by the 50s and 60s décor. They relax within the buzzing activity, made busier by the echoing of the wooden floorboards. Part of the hotel houses a bottle shop where you can grab a bottle before heading down Victoria Street to the many local restaurants. Alternatively, grab a cafe-style, inexpensive snack from the Bar. If you start here, you may end up here or choose to party all night in the nearby Kings Cross.

Bar, food, cocktails and club, what more could one ask? After watching a movie at the cinema, come in for some very good cafe food. Often used as a venue for functions or club type events, its resident club night suitably named "Bendy at the Dendy", plays deep and dirty house tunes. Arrive early for half price cocktails and get ready for a cranker! Whatever the reason, the Dendy Bar is unlikely to disappoint.

The Dolphin is a local landmark—a beautiful, traditional corner pub that is popular with locals, and heavily patronised by Rugby Union fans before and after games at the nearby Sydney Football Stadium. The classic pub decor (polished timber fixtures and fittings, brass tap ware) has recently been redone and refurbished, retaining all of its original charm. The hotel offers fine dining in its smart restaurant (Seafood and Wild Duck), as well as a more laid back affair in its bistro (salads and pasta).

Established in 1857, this piece of history remains a favorite with locals. The Dry Dock's two bars serve up schooners of Aussie beers, as well as trusty imports like Kilkenny and Guinness. There is a Las Vegas-style gaming room and punters can also put a bet on at the TAB, play a game of trivia, or catch the action on Sky or Foxsports. There's good pub grub over the counter and fine food in the covered courtyard Aviary Restaurant including roasted veal, duck breast with star anise and Thai seafood curry. Yummy!!

This historic pub is popular with Sydney's Irish community, and not just the backpacker crowd. The gracious Durty Nelly has been lovingly restored and serves traditional brews like Guinness and Kilkenny with a refined class that sets it apart from some of the rowdier Irish watering holes around town. On a wet, windy day by the fire, you would swear you were back in the emerald isle. Durty Nelly's also serves a great Shepherd's Pie.

The obvious draw at this chic bar is the outdoor patio with simply amazing views of the harbor and the Harbour Bridge. But for a bar so hip, there is a variety of fashionable and very casual looks so do not feel the need to dress-up to enjoy. The crowd is an interesting mix of well-heeled tourists and business folk enjoying the ultra modern décor which includes plenty of seating both inside and out. Of course, you want a seat outdoors. Surprisingly it is not too pricey, you can buy great stuff that are moderately priced. Bar snacks such as pizzetta and bruschetta are also available.

The battle at hand is not Napoleonic but much closer to home--which is Sydney's longest-established pub, the Lord Nelson or the Hero? Debate has raged for years, but no one is about to surrender this one. The Hero is steeped in history so palpable you can almost hear the bawdy cries of the drunken sailors who drank here back in the mid-nineteenth century reverberating off the sandstone walls. The Hero is a living part of Australia's heritage--and a great place for a cold beer and a game of two up. Food served includes fish, meat and vegetable dishes.

The Kirribilli has all the hallmarks of a good Aussie pub--live music, good DJs, a dance floor, and trivia competitions. Situated opposite Milsons Point Station, this is a popular spot to duck in for a quick drink after work, or on your way into the city. Imported beers and a wide-ranging wine list are a feature of the Kirribilli. The atrium bistro features pasta and steak nights, and serves an excellent roast with all the trimmings. The salads are fresh and healthy, and the chips cooked the way chips are supposed to be cooked.

As well as being a pub, this venue plays host to great recovery parties that you will not want to miss after your Sleaze Ball or Mardi Gras bender. The patrons are a mixture of gay and straight and the activities here are aplenty. Come for the free pool all day Saturday, or take it more seriously with competitions on a Wednesday and Thursday evening. There are trivia nights on Tuesday evenings.

Period-style pub

Sydney, NSW 2025
Australia

This is a Golden Oldie in art deco pubs--stylishly renovated and restored to polished perfection (little wonder it was formerly called The Ritz). There is also period-style pub accommodation upstairs. A vast wood-and-brass island bar and glass bar fridge in the shape of the Manhattan skyline take pride of place amongst the thousands of deco tiles. Like the pub, the food here is simple and stylish--gourmet pizzas for one, salads, pastas and nachos. You will often see locals ordering take away.

Situated on one of the historic Walsh Bay wharves with great water views, this bar is a real treat. It has comfortable table and lounge seating inside for the cooler months but really comes into its own when the weather warms up and you can sit outside beside the gently lapping water and watch the sun set over Sydney's bustling harbour. The bar specialises in martinis AUD11 and assorted cocktails. Clientele range hotel guests and tourists to locals out for a good time.

This is a principal landmark along Balmain's main drag. From here, everything is either "up the hill" (towards the shopping heart of the village), or "down the hill (to the ferry wharf), and the fabulous front balcony has stunning views of both--the perfect place to people watch as you knock back a cold beer. This gracious sandstone and jarrah timber pub has been lovingly renovated and has not lost any of its intrinsic charm. Locals and tourists come here to enjoy the pub food which includes plenty of seafood and meat dishes with a hint of Italian.

The epitome of groovy, stylish and scrumptious modern Asian - and that is just the interior. A fusion of different continents makes for a fantastic combination of tastes and flavours; all consumed from long tables in designer decor. If there is a long wait for a table, there is always the adjacent bar full of hungry fellow diners. It all happens in a large airy renovated space and is as cool as Sydney comes. Bookings are available only for lunch. And if are in Melbourne and want a touch of Longrain, step in at 44 Little Bourke Street; yes it is yet another Longrain sibling for you!

Sherlock Holmes would have been right at home in this very English pub, built in 1890 and virtually unchanged to this day. Locals of all ages who are after a pint, a yarn, and a game of darts frequent the Lord Dudley. Dark red carpeting, roaring log fires, and cosy tables make the Lord Dudley a haven on a dark, cold winter's night. English beers including Boddingtons, Bass and Newcastle Brown are big here, and the courtyard restaurant offers traditional pub meals for under AUD20. There is also a 130-strong wine list.

Maisy's Cafe

24 hour hole-in-the-wall
164 Military Road
Neutral Bay
Sydney, NSW 2089
Australia
+61 (0)2 9908 4030
A popular venue with late-night and shift workers on their way home from the office, this tiny hole-in-the-wall has been packed to the rafters since it first opened, many years ago now. The décor is stainless steel and chrome. A dumb waiter (basket on a chain) airlifts meals between the two dining floors and the kitchen. A sinful selection of cakes (Mud Cake, Carrot Cake, thick-crust Apple Pie) will tempt even the most diet-conscious. Maisy's serves snacks and mostly light meals in the order of nachos, pasta, pizzas-for-one and pancakes.

With its wooden floors and light interior, Mansion Hotel is a regular meeting place for the twenty somethings, scantily clad in the latest fashions. During the day the bar serves snacks and light bites and on Thursday nights, live bands play. On the weekends the place packs out and the dance floor pumps to Top 40s popular music. Not the place to be if sweaty bodies are not your thing, but if you fancy a boogie then this could be the spot for you.

Originally built for the Tattersall's Hotel in 1883, this marvellous bar was rescued from destruction by the Hilton Hotel and installed in the basement in the early 1970s. A firm favourite with Sydneysiders it is a riot of indulgent Italianate gold, marble and rococo extravaganzas and a very nice place to have a drink and listen to live music. Graceful arches, glorious stained glass ceilings and doors and a carved bar make this a wonderfully eccentric watering hole. There is also a gallery of original Julian Ashton paintings.

Suit, suits and more suits. City workers unite here. On a Friday night the patronage is so big that more than 100 suits pour onto the pavement and swill their beers. Every week night live bands play. Come to mingle with the office workers during the week or to relax on a weekend afternoon in this modern pub which definitely has a touch of the Irish about it. At lunch times the bistro serves up wholesome pub grub which you can wash down with a pint of Guinness.

The Mezz Bar is several genres all rolled into one. It is a bar, an Italian restaurant called Amalias@Mezz and once the dining is done, it turns into a dance party with a revolving selection of late-night DJs. Popular with city workers, it is cosy and comfortable and quite large, with bar and restaurant seating that can be moved back when the dance floor is pumping. Pasta dishes include popular favourites such as Lasagne and Spaghetti Napoli and tempting alternatives such as Fettuccine with Tiger Prawns.

Once all cut off jeans, leather or tight t-shirts this place is changing. Up with the times, the Midnight Shift or simply 'the shift' as its known to locals is slowly moving from being a gay male only club and bar to a more liberated venue. However, generally Saturday night is a Boys Zone. Entry is usually free, so it is worth checking out if it sounds like your thing. Dark and a bit dingy, the dance floor gets crowded and sweaty and things do not really get going until well after midnight.

This great space is the perfect haven for movers and groovers looking for something a little different. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights relax with a drink and listen to urban funk played by an ever-changing line-up of the latest DJs. There is an extensive array of cocktails available, as well as wine by the glass and beer on tap.

Generally a straight club, its recent facelift has changed the top bar area into a modern bar area, whilst the downstairs area remains a clubbers sweat box. On a Wednesday evening its Warm Up, a free night where twisted break beats and special acts appearing weekly perform (for serious music lovers). On weekends and in the upstairs bar a mixture of disco, funk, rhythm and blues and hip hop play to a polished but not overtly poses crowd.

Loads of leather pants, muscles, mini skirts and high heels hang here. This crowd is not short of plastic and the décor reflects the glamour and sophistication of the patrons dancing to the mainly house music. Done up to the nines there are three bars: the Chill Out Bar, VIP Bar and Main Bar just off the dance floor. Still it is not a huge space so you need to get there early or be prepared to queue. Membership for the club is available.
