A club with all the extras
16 Flinders Street
Darlinghurst
Sydney, NSW 2010
Australia
+61 2 9380 8700
http://www.arqsydney.com.au
michael@arqsydney.com.au
A fairly new, gay venue, beginning to make its mark on Sydney's clubbers as a location with the lot. Within the complex are a club, a bar, a wine bar, an oyster bar, a cocktail bar and a restaurant. The nightclub area houses two dance floor areas so there is plenty of room to get sweaty in! There are also Drag shows, a function area and a weekly Monday recovery party. Different levels mean different music vibes are on offer throughout the night. Popular with gay and straight, you get all sorts here.

Beresford Hotel

Party Into The Daylight
354 Bourke Street
Darlinghurst
Sydney, NSW 2010
Australia
+61 (0)2 9331 1045
This place hardly ever seems to close. Its specialty is its Monday Morning recovery party. The club inside is called the Discovery, and on some mornings the patronage and High NRG house music spill out into the streets. Earlier on in the night drinks are cheaper but overall they are priced quite well. The clientele are hardened clubbers who are not afraid of a little sweat—if it gets too sticky they just strip off and reveal their muscular, tattooed chests.

Betty's Soup Kitchen

Honest-to-goodness food
84 Oxford Street
Darlinghurst
Sydney, NSW 2010
Australia

This big farmhouse-style kitchen, with wide, dark polished floorboards, high ceilings and wooden tables is a comforting, homey spot in the middle of the frenetic, Oxford Street clubbing strip. As well as fresh, wholesome soups like Potato and Pumpkin, Carrot and Ginger, Gazpacho, and Cold Potato and Leek, choose from Pasta, nourishing Nachos, and staples like Lamb Stew, Fish Fingers and Bangers and Mash. There is a great salad bar--a mixed combo worth a sampling.

Blueberries Bar and Brasserie

Pick of the North Sydney bunch
107-109 Mount Street
North Sydney
Sydney, NSW 2060
Australia
+61 2 9954 4919
Blueberries is a microcosm of North Sydney itself--office, eighties-style architecture, lots of suits, conservative at lunch time, wild after those après-work cocktails have kicked in, and the back dance floor area transforms into a strobe-lit nightclub. This is one of the latest closers in the area. Tables surround the centre bar and big, comfy booths line the walls--the perfect spot for a power-lunch or sharing a cosy cocktail. Food choices include New York-style Wedges and Sour Cream, Nachos, Pastas and Seared Sirloins. Daiquiris are a perennial favourite. Blueberries also does a decent Bloody Mary.

http://www.thebourbon.com.au/

This place, known as a haven for homesick Americans and a sailors hangout, is always open and always entertaining. From 5pm until 9pm, a pianist plays Golden Oldies tunes then until 3am on a weekday and weekends until 7am a rhythm and blues pop band or Top 40 music plays. Within the complex there are two discos, one playing techno and house the other playing retro and techno. Comfortable and traditional, this place is filled with a combination of locals and tourists. The Bourbon & Beefsteak serves an a la carte menu of seafood, Steak, Tex-Mex and the like. Breakfast is also served 24 hours.

Caffeine Caffe

Addictive local cafe
128 Erskineville Road
Erskineville
Sydney, NSW 2043
Australia
+61 (0)2 9516 4207
In the heart of the hip, happening little village of Erskineville, across the street from both the station and the well known Rose of Australia hotel, Caffeine has created a buzz among coffee addicts far and wide. The latest development is live music, from 4pm until late on Sundays. Be warned--service can be excruciatingly slow. Tiled walls, a concrete floor, big timber-framed windows and wooden tables complete the décor--the paved area out the front is the place to be on weekends.

City Extra

Extra, extra...
301 Church Street
Parramatta
Sydney, NSW 2150
Australia
+61 2 9633 1188
The flagship City Extra cafe, at Circular Quay, has the sweeping postcard views of the harbour; this one at Parramatta has the surf - the cyber surf, that is. City Extra is a theme restaurant, with newspaper motifs and paraphernalia everywhere from the menus to the wall decorations to the bathroom doors. Old-fashioned advertisements and editorials remind you just how much change the last century has seen. The menu includes gourmet burgers, big salads, pastas, wicked cakes and towering iced chocolate concoctions. Additional Branch: Circular Quay.

City Extra Circular Quay

Good news and good food
Shop E4, East Podium
Circular Quay
Sydney, NSW 2000
Australia
+61 2 9241 1422
eat@cityextra.com.au
City Extra has survived the recent re-construction of the Quay and is still open 24 hours a day, seven days a week -good news for loyal patrons who have been coming here since their heady halcyon days of dancing the night away at the clubs and pubs in and around the CBD and The Rocks. Some things never change. This is a scene out of Breakfast at Tiffany's; glamour girls and boys dressed in their finery, tucking into coffee and a Danish as dawn breaks over Sydney's deserted streets. Newly coupled couples cosy up in the big, comfy booths, and tourists clamour for the outdoor Quay-side tables. The upstairs section is often closed but offers one of the best views of the harbour and bridge. The newsprint-style menu has not changed but the prices have rationalised - standard nachos, gourmet burger or pasta meal will set you back around AUD10-AUD15. The quality has definitely improved and the service is fast and friendly no matter the hour.

Disco freaks, drags and weirdos
33 Oxford Street, Level 1
Darlinghurst, UN Nightclub
Sydney, NSW 2011
Australia
+61 2 9267 7036
http://www.dcmsydney.com/
Arguably Sydney's most popular venue with a massive capacity of 1500. UN has been around since the early 90s and still packs them in. Generally it attracts a mixed crowd of gay and straight, loads of silicon, muscles and tight clothes. Gay night is on Thursdays when Drag Shows come on around 2a. It does not have the cheapest cover charges in Sydney and the drinks are priced to match. It is a club full of committed clubbers dancing to fast pumping house music.

Once a more or less gay only venue the Exchange now plays host to a mixture of gay and straight party goers. The Lizard Lounge a bar and club in one, plays a range of tunes to a sexy crowd. The Phoenix Bar is largely for hard clubbers playing tunes ranging from underground, dance and funk. All in all it provides inexpensive drinks and is open until the wee hours of the morning.

Located near the infamous fountain on the main drag of Kings Cross, the Fountain Cafe is an early opening, late closing favourite among the local community of backpackers, inner city dwellers and passing trade. Meals are basic but filling: spaghetti Bolognese and salad, hamburger, salad and chips. Internet access is a bargain. And with 41 terminals, getting online is not a problem.

To those really in the know, this is the Taxi Club. Previously known as one of Sydney's seediest clubs, this place has cleaned its act up with some major renovations. Punters are a mixed bag of straight, gay, weird and freaky. Drinks are well priced, it is always open and you can get down to loads of commercial dance tunes. The most famous little pie cart around, Harry's Café de Wheels has graced album covers, been immortalised in song lyrics, and is frequented by a star-studded clientele (Lachlan Murdoch, Sarah O'Hare et al). As a result, this is a favourite paparazzi haunt, so you could find yourself getting snapped at two in the morning as you tuck into Harry's traditional Aussie meat pies, sauce and mushy peas. Pies start at AUD3.50.

Drinking, drinking, drinking and perhaps a boogie to commercial dance hits or music from the 80s and 90s in the Bar Luna, this popular venue is spread over four floors. Attracting all sorts and being somewhat more civilized during the day, this is predominantly a watering hole where you can sample any number of their 110 different types of local and imported beer. And even better, Happy Hour is from 5pm-7pm. Smart and stylish, pull on your fancy togs and join the throng. There is a restaurant downstairs.

Maisy's Cafe

24 hour hole-in-the-wall
164 Military Road
Neutral Bay
Sydney, NSW 2089
Australia
+61 (0)2 9908 4030
A popular venue with late-night and shift workers on their way home from the office, this tiny hole-in-the-wall has been packed to the rafters since it first opened, many years ago now. The décor is stainless steel and chrome. A dumb waiter (basket on a chain) airlifts meals between the two dining floors and the kitchen. A sinful selection of cakes (Mud Cake, Carrot Cake, thick-crust Apple Pie) will tempt even the most diet-conscious. Maisy's serves snacks and mostly light meals in the order of nachos, pasta, pizzas-for-one and pancakes.

Don't show up in your Sunday cleaning clothes if you expect to slide by the entrance and enter the lift that takes you to this bar heaven. Only the coolest hipsters make it into this place, but that should include you if you simply look the part. With a pool hall, club and bar, this Oxford Street institution is one of the harder places to get into along this strip. With three bars—the first, an oval shape bar, swoops its way down to form the second bar in the pool hall. The third bar is members only and you need a photo ID Q card to get in and dance, mingle or pose. The décor is modern with high ceilings and the clientele are hip and trendy.
