Even before its cinematic debut in the film "Erskineville Kings", Gould's was arguably Newtown's best known secondhand bookshop, with floor to ceiling shelves and big discount bins full of unsorted treasures just waiting to be discovered. Hordern House is a rare survival, being one of the fortunate properties in this part of Sydney to escape the developers during the 1960s. Although semi-derelict, the building was acquired by the present owners in 1985 and underwent an extensive restoration program. It now provides an appropriate, spacious venue to display works associated with the area of colonial travel and exploration including manuscripts, books, prints and paintings. General access to the ground floor Book Room and Picture Room; limited access by guided tour to the upstairs Sitting Room. No photography allowed on the property.

Shearer's On Norton successfully combines the best that all good CD shops, booksellers and Internet centres can be, with a fantastic offering of all of the above, and great coffee besides. There is a good selection of Italian books and music (given Shearer's location in the heart of Little Italy). They also cover a huge selection of other categories including Australiana, children's books, computers, cooking, travel and history to name but a few. The bookshop has its own reading group and hosts regular authors evenings.
