Sydney Hospital dates back to 1810 when Governor Macquarie ordered construction of a long-overdue, new facility financed through the notorious rum trade. This originally comprised three separate rectangular blocks along Macquarie Street; the main central block was demolished in 1881 to make room for the present stone hospital (completed in 1894). Tours of the site are led by knowledgeable hospital volunteers and last between sixty and ninety minutes. Morning or afternoon tea is also available. Review © 2009, Wcities |
