Equality is everyone's birth right and no one has the right to impinge on it! This is the main reason why the Carver library Auditorium was set up in 1938, in honor of George Washington Carver. Set up for the Afro-American community, this center focused on educational, cultural, political, social activities till the late 1950s. It was only in 1976 that it was re-christened the Carver Community Cultural Center. Afro-American artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Lionel Hampton, Paul Robeson, Louis Armstrong and Billy Eckstein have enraptured audiences with their soul touching music. Initially, the Afro-American community was not allowed to join the San Antonio's main cultural center. They were equal to the 'white' Americans, yet they were separate. Today, the Carver center is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural where Visual and Performing Arts pre-dominate. But sometimes history is not easily forgotten and thus, this center pays most attention to its Afro-American community. If Jazz music sets the mood for you, then this is the place to be. Families can plan an evening out at this center because they have family and intimate series. Check the website for details. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Some of the game's legendary players like Terry Bradshaw, Roger Carr and Fred Dean have made their mark on the field. The well renovated stadium, opened in 1968 now holds up to 23,000 fans, who go crazy, watching their heroes in action. Now, a member of the Louisiana Tech Athletics Hall of Fame and the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, the stadium has indeed made a name for itself, being host to nine conference championships during the 1940-1966 period. Games are televised as well, and it's not just the locals who get a bit of action on TV, but the nation at large. A powerful lighting system, a press box, a sky box and numerous refreshment stands make the experience of a game all the more memorable. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Along the River Walk San Antonio, TX 78205 +1 210 224 6163 (River Oversight Committee) dbayer@sanantonio.gov |
A large procession led by young children with candle lights reflecting in their innocent eyes while they sing soft Spanish hymns is what Las Posadas looks like. But this ancient ritual involves a lot more than just parading down the River Walk...the children actually carry figures of Mary and Joseph who are looking for shelter. The procession includes people of all ages and not just children, who participate in this street festival which is a major part of the Mexican pre-Christmas festivities. Banging on doors asking for shelter and walking down the long way, the exhausted children finally get their work's due at the San Fernando cathedral, where the procession ends and the children are treated to a pompous piñata party! An Austin tradition |
2201 Barton Springs Rd Austin, TX 78746 +1 512 397 1463 |
For more than 35 years, one of the tallest manmade trees in the country lights up the holidays in Austin. The 175-foot Christmas tree, decked out in nearly 4000 twinkling lights, is lit every night from early December to the end of the year. It is tradition to stand in the center and spin around with your loved ones underneath the tree for a fantastic light show. Be careful, as you will find many people twirling in circles. The lighting takes place in Zilker Park. Review © 2007, Wcities |
