It must be said that the streets of Toledo are not very lively during the week, because few places remain open until the wee hours of the morning. Your best bet for midweek entertainment is a trip to the movies in either the Multicines María Cristina or the Multicines Mayoral. It is also worth checking out whether the Teatro de Rojas (Rojas Theatre) has any interesting cultural offerings.

Thank God it’s Thursday

Everything changes on Thursdays. This is the day when students from the Castilla-La Mancha University hold their faculty parties, so if you are out on this night you will come across a lot of university students.

We will start off our night in the district of Santa Teresa, in the Plaza de Cuba, an area of the city that is constantly growing. There are several cervecerías (pubs mainly serving beer and tapas) to choose from, the best being El Pasito, El Hórreo and Cruz Blanca. After this, you can stay in Santa Teresa and choose among several different options. For some quiet drinks in an exclusive establishment, there is La Embajada, located at the junction of Maestros Espaderos. In the same area you will find the only karaoke bar in Toledo, Fernando's, where they also have live shows. The following places have a more youthful atmosphere: Katanga, Straze, Público, Otto Max and Kaché. Modern music and young people are the essential ingredient of these pubs that usually stay open until about 4am.

Old Town, New Style

The city's Historical Quarter has more to offer. Out of the wide selection of bars, don't miss Tbeo. Suited to all ages and musical tastes, it is nevertheless the meeting place of the city's modern bunch. Tbeo probably closes later than any other bar, so any time is a good time to go. Another great place to go is the spacious La Taberna de Garcilaso, where, if you're lucky, you will catch live music, magic and comedy shows. The Pícaro is similar. It's worth a visit for their well-presented cocktails alone.

Jazz and blues buffs should go for a drink at El Último, where they also have the occasional concert. La Chapinería, beside the cathedral clock door, is another classic Toledo joint, as is Camelot. The latter really goes for modern and yesteryear Spanish pop music. Two pubs in the Miradero shopping centre cater to fans of radical rock, the Rock'A and La Bruja. La Oficina has the widest and most original selection of drinks. All these bars charge reasonable prices, ranging from 500 or 600 pesetas for a glass of spirits.

For those who really like rocking it until late, Toledo has a small but varied and interesting selection of discotheques and after-hours bars. In the Historical Quarter is Greco's, where most late-nighters end up. It is a big place with music for all tastes where the dancing doesn't stop until the first rays of sun penetrate. Close by is Oberón, an after-hours joint recommended for fans of club and techno music generally. Also in the Historical Quarter is that doyen of discotheques, Sithon's; they have had Toledo citizens dancing for over 30 years. Finally, outside the Historical Quarter is La Ronda, a disco with go-go dancers, striptease and lots of surprises.

For anyone with energy left to spare, you can always start over at the cervecerías in the district of Santa Teresa.

Bruja

Most radical place in Toledo
Galería Comercial Miradero, local 209
Paseo del Miradero
Toledo 45001
Spain
This is the favorite place of the most radical partiers in the city. The bar is located in the Miradero Shopping Center just a few meters from the Zocodover Plaza, in Toledo's Historic District. It attracts kids looking for affordable prices, (EUR 1.80-3.60), and is a place to listen to the latest hard-hitting rock. Despite the small size, every now and again the bar offers rock concerts, usually by groups from Toledo who are just starting out in the music world.

Camelot

Nine hundred years of history
Cristo de la Luz, 10
Toledo 45001
Spain
Nine hundred years of history stand behind this pub's walls. Located in a basement locale close to the 1000-year-old Cristo de la Luz Mosque, Camelot is a classic spot in Toledo's nightlife. The bar has always been characterized by its spectacular brick dome and for the Spanish music played there, with a special emphasis on the sounds of the Madrid movida and other 1980s music in general. Two more basic ingredients include cute girls and parties every Thursday night for university students who don't feel like getting up early on Friday morning.

Hórreo

Galician cuisine
Costa Rica, 1
Toledo 45004
Spain

Located in the Santa Teresa neighbourhood outside the historical district, this was the first Galician restaurant to open in the city, in the mid 80s. The decoration consists of elegant wood, brick and granite. This is the perfect place to enjoy a good seafood dish, Galician-style octopus, and all types of fish. You can wash all this down with their great variety of Galician wines such as Ribeiros, delicious Albariños, and others. In the dining room many business lunches are held. The service is good, too.

Katanga

For all types of people
Avenida de América, 18
Toledo 45004
Spain
+34 925 25 1561
Katanga is how people from Toledo used to refer to the city's public buses. This bar is located in the Santa Teresa neighborhood and attracts a mainly young and easy-going clientele. The music is varied and ranges from popular Salsa hits to Techno beats. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve - like all the bars in the area - they serve the traditional migas (fried bread with raisins and chorizo) and beer from noon until night. There's a dart board for entertainment as well.

Oberón

Dance 'til dawn
Galería comercial Miradero, local 222
Paseo del Miradero
Toledo 45001
Spain
+34 925 25 5601
The latest trends in dance music can be heard every night in this club, which could very well be found on the legendary Valencia-Madrid Ruta del Bacalao (literally, cod route: techno dance clubs and bars once lining the motorway between the two cities). Oberon is located in Miradero, a shopping arcade in Toledo's old town, close to Plaza Zocodover. In the early hours of the night (from 9pm to midnight), the doors open to the youngest crowd (under 20). The bulk of the clientele is between 25 and 30, and they come to dance the night - and part of the next day - away, to the songs played by the club's professional DJs.

Otto Max

Two floors, two scenes
Avenida de América, 4
Toledo 45004
Spain
+34 925 21 4966
The number of people moving into new houses and apartments in the Santa Teresa neighbourhood over the last ten years has been phenomenal. Loads of bars have opened up to cater for them all, and this is one of them. It's a two-storey building. One floor is set aside for loud music and has a dance floor. The other floor offers comfortable chairs and tables to allow quiet conversation among friends. The interior decor is smart and up-scale and the music on the dance floor is an eclectic mixture.

Pícaro

Live shows and lively atmosphere
Cadenas, 6
Toledo 45001
Spain
+1 34 925 22 1301
This is an excellent place to spend a few entertaining hours over the weekend when there's always a live show of some sort. It's normally musical, but it can range from country to cabaret. Sometimes there are magic shows or or performance art. Choose from the best range of beautifully presented cocktails and coffee liqueurs in town. It's a huge place with plenty of room to dance and lots of comfy chairs where you can sit and relax.

Ronda

Go-Go dancers and striptease
Ronda de Buenavista, 23
Toledo 45005
Spain
+34 925 25 5648
A huge disco with lots of action, especially at the weekends when male and female dancers perform spectacular striptease acts. The crazy go-go dancers keep the tempo high all the way through until dawn, helped by the best DJs in the province. It's the place to be for every self-respecting dance lover in Toledo aged 20 to 40 and it forms part of a complex with a cafeteria, apartment-hotel and a pub.

Sithon's

The dance club par excellence
Callejón de Lucio, 1
Toledo 45001
Spain
+34 925 22 2071
This is the city's classic dance club. Located in the old town, next to Plaza Zocodover, it has been setting the pace for Toledo's night scene for years. Although it still looks like most of the dance clubs opened in Spain in the late 60s, Sithon's has known how to roll with the punches, bringing in new faces and names. Despite the wide musical variety of the DJs' repertoire, they play disco, dance, and techno primarily. Weekend night-owls come together to party in a place where they'll find great prices on drinks. From six in the evening until midnight, Sithon's is open to young people from 14 to 19 years old for "light sessions". During this time, the bar does not serve alcohol or tobacco.

Taberna de Garcilaso

Parties and live shows
Rojas, 5
Toledo 45002
Spain

A great place for tasty tapas and fine wine. Try the duck liver "tosta" in particular. The huge cocktail bar hosts live music and stand-up comics and acts as an ideal venue to celebrate parties and events like Carnaval and Halloween. You'll hear all sorts of music from flamenco to rock. You only pay admission when someone famous is performing. You'll find it close to Calle Santo Tome.

Último

Live blues and jazz
Plaza Colegio Infantes, 4
Toledo 45001
Spain
This is one of the few bars in Toledo that offers live blues and jazz concerts. It's located in the old town, close to the catedral. They put on a show every second Friday. Sometimes it's live music, sometimes storytelling or even a short plays. They usually charge EUR 2 for the show, but not always. The interior is tastefully decorated with objects such as old typewriters and telephones. Local artists often display their work on the walls; the music is good and the atmosphere is relaxed.
