Toledo offers tourists a broad range of accommodation, from cheap hotels and economic guesthouses, right up to the likes of the Parador Nacional and several four-star hotels offering magnificent views of this beautiful city.

Each year, thousands of tourists flock to the historical city, a great rock cradled by the Tagus River where Christians, Jews and Muslims have all left their mark. Due to tourist numbers, the past few months have seen the beginning of several hotel building projects - two luxury hotels in the Historical Quarter (Reyes Católicos and the Plaza del Juego de Pelota) and others in Cigarral del Bosque and Carreras de San Sebastián. There has also been renewed talk of converting the old Hospital de Tavera, which houses the Archivo de la Nobleza (Archives of Nobility), into accommodation. Other hotel chains, such as Meliá, Sheraton and NH, have expressed interest to the City Council in opening hotels in the city.

Many of the hotels already in Toledo are located around the Valle and Cigarrales, as well as on the city outskirts on the roads to Ávila and Madrid. There are also good hotels, both expensive and economical, in the Historical Quarter. Advanced booking is recommended, because on public holidays that are considered of tourist interest - Corpus Christi and Semana Santa (Easter Week) - hotel accommodation is at a premium.

Luxury Suites

Although there are currently no five-star hotels in Toledo, the Parador Nacional is a good choice for those who like luxury. Strategically situated and with splendid views of the city, it holds the honour of being where the acuerdo de las pensiones (lodging accord), better known as the Pacto de Toledo (Pact of Toledo), was signed six years ago. Among its frequent visitors are well-known personalities like football players Sanchís and Raúl, and singers like Sara Montiel and Juan Manuel Serrat. Very close to the Parador is the Hotel Doménico, more modern but no less beautiful nor less comfortable. In the area of the Valle, between the Puente de Alcántara and the Puente de San Martín and along a road running parallel to the river, there are many cigarrales - typical Toledo country homes - that have been converted into hotels. They include Abacería, Los Cigarrales (inexpensive) and La Almazara (very cheap), and all have panoramic views of the city. In the same area, but in a new building, is the AC Ciudad de Toledo Hotel, a popular conference venue.

Suburban Accommodation

On the city outskirts, along the road leading to Ávila, stands the Hotel Beatriz. With its 295 rooms, it offers the largest accommodation capacity available in Toledo. Its 23 conference rooms seating 2,000 people make it a popular choice for many national conventions. More moderately priced, and located on the outskirts of the city on the road leading to Madrid, are the hotels María Cristina and Mayoral, close to the bullring. There are two four-star hotels in the Historical Quarter, Carlos V and Alfonso VI. They are located right in the city centre, beside the Alcázar (Fortress). Very handily located, they are within walking distance of places of interest, shops and the lively atmosphere of the Plaza de Zocodover, the city's nerve centre.

Staying in the Jewish Quarter

The Hotel Pintor El Greco, located right in the middle of the Jewish Quarter, offers good value for money - although prices rise during Corpus Christi and Semana Santa. Close by are monuments like the Sinagoga del Tránsito, Sinagoga de Santa María la Blanca, Iglesia de Santo Tomé (Saint Thomas' Church), the Palacio de Fuensalida (Fuensalida Palace), and the Cortes de Castilla-La Mancha (Castilla-La Mancha Parliament). Even more economical is the cosy Hotel Santa Isabel. It offers good service, and is located just 50 metres from the Catedral.

For lovers of the outdoors and fishing, the Hotel El Diamantista is a good place to go. It is located in a quiet spot right beside the Tagus River, yet is only five minutes' walk from the city centre. If you are looking for something cheap, Toledo has several cheap new hotels with good facilities. These include the Hostal Centro, Nuevo Labrador, and Sol. There are also camping grounds like Camping Circo Romano and Camping El Greco. If you hold a youth hostel card, you can stay at the hostel in Castillo de San Servando, beside the Academia de Infantería.

Alcántara Bridge

A thousand-year-old bridge
Ronda de Juanelo, s/n
Toledo 45001
Spain
The Puente de Alcántara bridge has a history that pre-dates its Islamic name (in Arabic "alcántara" means bridge). It was originally constructed in the Roman era. It was later destroyed then rebuilt during Arabic times (854). In 1257 floods demolished it again but Alfonso X ordered its reconstruction the following year. The bridge was originally defended by a tower at either end. Only the one nearest the city remains and the other was replaced by a baroque gateway in 1721.

Corpus Christi

Eucharistic cult
Plaza del Ayuntamiento
Toledo 45002
Spain
+34 925 25 4030
http://www.corpuschristitoledo...
This is the biggest festival in Toledo, celebrated 60 days after Easter Sunday. A procession starts at the cathedral and travels through the main streets of the city. These streets, in turn, are decorated in a colorful and unique way that is well worth seeing in person. The procession is covered by awnings that protect the Arfe monstrance, ordered by Cardenal Cisneros in 1515 and the center of attention of the crowd. Brotherhoods and organizations parade in order in the procession, as do the small pages that throw rose petals on the streets along the way, which are also covered with rosemary and thyme. Visiting the city during this religious festival is highly recommended (but don't forget to book accommodation well in advance).

The old Convento de San Gil, also known as 'Gilitos', as it once belonged to the Franciscan religious order, has housed the Cortes de Castilla la Mancha (Regional Assembly of Castilla la Mancha) since 1983. The building, which does not admit visitors, was built between 1610 and 1918. The convent later served as a provincial prison from 1860-1939 after the Catholic Church lost title to it. In more recent times, it has also been used as a fire and police station prior to becoming the regional assembly in 1986. The lovely view of the Tajo river from the balcony is also worth mentioning.

Semana Santa

Silent processions
Casco histórico
Toledo
Spain
+34 925 22 0843
Holy Week coincides with the first days of Spring. During one week, sculptures of Christ on the Cross and the Virgin Mary (some dating from the 16th century) and hooded penitents parade through the narrow streets of Toledo. Each Brotherhood has its seat in a parish church, and from there they begin their processions, formed by other components as well, such as drums and horns, silence, and candles. It is recommended to attend the "Christ the Savior" processions or the "Dying Christ" processions that travel through covered passageways called cobertizos. Toledo's Holy Week has been declared of Regional Tourism Interest.

Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca

A 12th-century Jewish temple
Reyes Católicos, 4
Toledo 45002
Spain
+34 925 22 7257
A uniquely beautiful building whose five naves are separated by stone columns supporting delicate horseshoe arches. The walls are starkly white. It most resembles a mosque, though it never was. You'll see fine examples of decorative plasterwork and blind arches inside. It was built as Toledo's main synagogue in 1180 (4940 in the Jewish calendar), but as a result of Saint Vicente Ferrer's anti-Semitic preaching, it was commandeered and converted into a Catholic church at the beginning of the 15th century. It later fulfilled many functions before falling into a terrible state of disrepair. Fortunately, it has now been restored to its former grandeur and is open to the public. Admission: EUR 2 Closed: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Tavera Palace - Lerma Museum

Inhabited 16th century palace
Hospital de Tavera, 2
Toledo 45003
Spain
This museum, within a 16th century palace, is unusual because it is still inhabited. Furniture and decor date from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and there are also some fine paintings, including works by El Greco, Ribera and Tintoretto. National Historic Archive records to do with the aristocracy are also housed here. Be patient if the door is not answered immediately. The occupants may have popped down to the shops or be showing other visitors around.

A cigarral is a private estate in Toledo located on the area surrounding the city on the other side of the river. It perhaps owes its name to the many singing cicadas (cigarras in Spanish) found in summertime, and consists of a large, several-storey home with garden and orchard. The house is usually quite humble, between rustic and conventual, with white walls and surrounded by terraces and patios. With beautiful lilacs, lilies, irises and the setting in general, the cigarral is highly valued in the Imperial City of Toledo. Illustrious people such as Gregorio Maranon have lived in some of Toledo's cigarrales at one point or another. In Zocodover Square you can take a mini-train (tren turistico) for a tour of the area.
