Al Carso

Amongst the green plains, another milestone for Trieste food
Malchina, 23/a
Trieste 34013
Italy

Yet another milestone in local restoration amidst the clearings and woods of Carso, much loved by the locals. This is Malchina, a tiny town near to Sistiana, half an hour from Trieste, heading towards Venice. In the large garden that seats over 100, you can spend lovely evenings or entire afternoons, trying the typical, wholesome dishes of this region simple, yet refined at the same time. The excellent game meat as starters will more than satisfy but it's hard to resist the rest, such as the homemade gnocchi, barley soups, wild boar shank and bacon faggots. And to drink, there is of course the unmistakable local red Terrano wine. There is seating for 130 inside but not opting for the garden means you miss out on some of the charm that this place holds. There is no problem with parking of course, but then that can be taken for granted out of town.

Al Tiglio

Pizza and fish in the shade of an enormous tree
Via Kosovel, 3
Trieste 34100
Italy

It is not by chance that the name of the place translates as 'The Lime Tree'. At the centre of the garden of this beautiful restaurant stands an enormous lime tree, which is already over 120 years old. Here, at the heart of the town of Basovizza, in the welcoming internal rooms, or under the branches of the old tree, you can opt for a nice pizza or if you prefer, a fish based dish. But Trieste is where you should be eating fish; here we are high up and although the air may be good, we are far from the sea. There is extra seating for 200 in the garden. For an intimate evening, perhaps in summer, this is the ideal place.

Scheriani

Beautiful agriturismo with lovely view
Darsella di San Bartolomeo
Trieste, Trieste 34015
Italy

"Scheriani" is one of the most famous agriturisms in the area. It is a pity that it is only open for a few months of the year (from April to August). It is a lovely place to come, it is located in open countryside, and has wooden tables amongst the trees and vines, and just a few metres further along there is a breath taking view over the sea. It is located near to Muggia, near the Slovenian border, and is quite difficult to find, but ask anyone nearby and they will be able to direct you. The food is excellent, but fades almost into the background when compared to the beautiful location. The dishes include abbondant plates of grilled chicken, beef, veal, rasnici and cevapcici(different pig meats), jota (a typical local bean soup which is quite bitter), bacon omelettes, and delicious cheeses and cold meats. The wines are all produced by the Scheriani family and are excellent. Make sure you book because it will be extremely difficult to find a table here if you don't. It is easy to park nearby.
