Al Faro

Panoramic restaurant
Scala Sforzi, 2
Trieste 34136
Italy
+39 40 41 0092
This restaurant is located at the foot of the imposing Vittoria lighthouse, facing the gulf, and is the place to try some good seafood dishes and excellent wines. This eatery has great business, mainly due to the desirable location and the resoluteness of the owner, Franco Eichberger, who recently took over the running of this establishment. Now the restaurant has become one of the most highly appreciated places to spend the evening for people of all ages. The terrace is splendid with great views, and can hold around sixty people. The interior is rather less inspiring, having remained the same as it always was. The restaurant is perfect for birthday parties, wedding receptions and christening parties and is also open at lunchtime. Situated on the Friuli road which leads up to Trieste's high plains, it takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the restaurant by car from the city center, and therefore abounds in parking space. The service is friendly and the dishes are simple, but of many different types, ranging from squid in marie rose sauce to sole, from sea-bass in batter to shellfish, and even including some old local specialties. There is rarely any meat except in exceptional circumstances and on request. The wine cellar is very well-stocked thanks to the efforts of the wine waiter, Signor Raimondo, the owner's brother. The recommended sweet, a chocolate or jam swiss roll, should be tried.

Antica Osteria Colle di Scorcola

Comfortable, delicious restaurant for romantic evenings
Via Commerciale, 134
Trieste 34134
Italy
+39 40 42 2962
This is a small, not very well-known restaurant but nevertheless delicious. The Colle di Scorcola along the hilly Via Commerciale seats around 50 and offers a menu base don fish and meat, repeated again and again. Comfortable and quiet the restaurant also boasts of lovely gardens, from which you can catch a glimpse of the sea. The dishes are innovative, fresh and appetising, with many starters and vegetables, fried fish, frico, meat pasta and specialities using colt meat. The wine list is satisfactory, but people really come here for the food and the atmosphere. This is the ideal place for a romantic evening à deux.

A classy place on the outskirts of the city
Via Bonomea, 52
Trieste 34136
Italy
+39 40 41 1150
This place is called 'Beautiful View' for a reason. There is an extraordinary view over the gulf of Trieste from the beautiful terrace. Known as one of the most chic places in the city, it is a few minutes from the city in the car and offers seasonal food. The most popular dishes are the home made pasta with scampi, tagliatelle with mushrooms, chocolate mousse for dessert, as well as meat and fish dishes. The restaurant seats about 50 and has become an immensely popular place for business lunches and dinners. This place has a good wine list and great service.

Marinella

Tasty fish dishes
Viale Miramare, 323
Trieste 34135
Italy
+39 40 41 0986
A great location and great cooking are characteristics of this restaurant, which is a favorite with tourists and large groups. Situated right at the entrance to the city along the promenade of Barcola, whoever comes to Trieste and travels along the coastal road has to pass by the restaurant. La Marinella has been one of the top fish restaurants in Trieste for many years. The atmosphere is spacious and bright. The area is particularly enchanting, even though the restaurant is to be found on one of the main roads of the province, it is still close to the sea, which means that a stroll along the promenade after a meal is something that is favoured by the people of Trieste. The restaurant is very busy at lunchtime on Sunday. All the recipes are fish based and nothing is left to chance. From the unforgettable seafood pasta to traditional fish dishes cooked according to a selection of local and international recipes. The flavors are delicious, and there is a good selection of wines.

Mille e una notte

The only Arab restaurant in the city
Via dei Carmelitani, 20
Trieste 34136
Italy
In the area of Gretta, this is the only Arab restaurant in the city. The cuisine is different and worth trying and there is a theme atmosphere in a place that seats 130 as well as outside seating. Amongst the specialities is cabah, meat which has been cooked over a flame, filled squid, pita bread, Egyptian prawns and cous cous, prepared according to Middle Eastern traditions. There is also a vast choice of vegetables and excellent home made desserts. If you are lucky, you will see some great bellydancing here.

Miramare

Lovely ice cream parlour by the sea
Viale Miramare, 279
Trieste 34100
Italy
Recently opened, this has quickly become a favourite with both tourists and locals. Near the extraordinary castle from which it takes its name, this ice cream parlour has an enviable position and attracts a host of young people at night. Along the road that is the main entrance to the city, around twenty minutes from the centre, it has a lovely garden near the sea as well as a large terrace that is covered over in winter. It offers ice cream, cocktails, coffee, fruit juices and liqueurs as well as snacks, such as pasta, steak and good salads. This is truly a lovely place, run by young people with waiters who look as if they have just stepped off the catwalk!

Pipolo

One of Trieste's historical ice cream parlours, quality guaranteed
Viale Miramare, 127
Trieste 34136
Italy
This is one of Triest's historical ice cream parlors with a name that guarantees quality. Pipolo, in the heart of the lovely Barcola district has a large lounge and terrace where you can enjoy amazing ice creams, coffees, hot chocolate, fruit juices, slushes and much more. You are not far from the sea here and a lovely green pine wood, at the beginning of one of Trieste's most popular walks (around 6km from the Castello di Miramare the lovely but unfortunate home of Massimiliano and Carlotta d'Austria.) Very busy in summer, both night and day, Pipolo is for many a real focal point even if the décor, although not too bad, does seem rather old-fashioned.

Savron

Central European Cuisine
Devincina, 25
Trieste, Trieste 34100
Italy
+39 40 22 5592
This restaurant is located in Devincina, a fraction of Prosecco, one of the main hamlets on the karstic plain. It is a temple of Central European cuisine. The walls are covered with evidence of Trieste's Austrian past. The two dining rooms and the pretty courtyard can hold more than 150 people. The menu is rich and includes many game dishes, and local specialties including Hapsburgan sauces and starters, gnocchi stuffed with ham and fontina cheese, wild boar cooked in red wine with juniper berries, onionm and olive oil, pork shin-bone with beer, and veal with lard. The best dish is the large peasant dish, prepared with bread gnocchi and grilled pork. The best desserts include the cooked strucolo (an excellent apple strudel), while as for the wines - which include both local and national products - you can trust the waiter to choose well for you. There is a bus which passes nearby the restaurant, but it is best to come by car as it is some kilometers outside the city and isn't particularly easy to find.

Tre Merli

Mediterranean restaurant
Viale Miramare, 42
Trieste 34136
Italy
+39 40 41 0884
http://www.tremerli.ws/
This eatery become "one of the places to be seen" when it was opened a few years ago by a small group of people who had previously run one of the most famous nightclubs in the city. It is spacious and has a garden overlooking the sea. Although it is a pizzeria, the menu is actually more varied, Mediterranean dishes with meat and fish, an English journalist who visited this restaurant said that he had never eaten such good monkfish. The prices are quite low. The wine list is good.
